Has anyone seen the movie The War Tapes?

Basically, 3 soldiers were given handheld cameras for an entire year of deployment in Iraq and it was then edited into a documentary.

If we can put aside all the bickering, pro/con about the war, for a moment (and hopefully for this thread), I think we can probably all agree this could be a very compelling watch.

I intend to see it though since its in limited release, my choices may be limited.

Just curious if anyone's seen it? If so, what are you impressions? What surprised you? What fit w/ your preconceptions? How did it match the image of the war that you have (and where do you happen to life, for frame of reference)?

ROFL, not controversial enough I guess?

Next time I'll mix in a healthy dose of the "liberal agenda" or "bush apologetics" and I'm sure we can have a thread that derails into a discussion on the minutia of whether or not Condi Rice is really a Neocon android w/ a secret lust for Pres. Bush.

/sigh

Never seen it, never will. :) I'm sorry that I can't help you out .Shane.

I can't say that I have seen it but I will keep an eye out for it. I wonder how badily it was edited. I find a lot of the speicals " from iraq " are anything but in terms of what is shown and what really goes down.

Maybe this quote will assuage whatever paranioa fears ;) you have about this somehow being part of someone's agenda.

The quote is taken from the front page and is from one of the soldiers who shot the film.

It’s been great. I’m glad that all sorts of people embraced it, and not just the Milblog people. The feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive. Both sides of the political spectrum in America know that soldiers wage war they don’t declare it. They’re sophisticated enough to separate the war from the warrior, as Sen. Kerry said at one point during the presidential debates. And that’s the way it should be. We’re an instrument of foreign policy we’re certainly not the deciders of it, so people cannot hold us to account for the wars that our country decides to wage, for better or worse.

I think it’s important for civilians and citizens of our great country, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum, to realize that there’s a war going on. I know it sounds like an obvious thing to say, but I don’t think that most people have a real understanding of what’s going on over there and by seeing this movie and getting inside the soldier’s head and getting a grounds eye view of what’s going on, perhaps they can think about it and apply a more sober judgment to their view. Wherever they fall in the political spectrum doesn’t matter to me, as long as they know what’s going on over there.

I'll check it out. I think I saw something on the Military Channel about it.

There was a show on a couple weeks back about a Marine group in Iraq, and that was pretty good. I think it was on A&E. Also the special on HBO called Baghdad ER.

Anyone ever seen the show Over There?

I watched about 3 episodes... meh. It seemed to disappear after about 6 or 7 episodes, I just figured it got cancelled.

At any rate, I like things like this documentary purports to be. When you hear it from the people who are actually in the middle of things, you realize NONE OF IT is like you think.
