It's just preference I guess. In college one of my math professors always defined x to be the horizontal axis, y to be vertical, and z was coming out of the whiteboard. Yet my other professors preferred z to be vertical.

When one professor mentioned that engineers often make up the y - axis instead of z, many of the students at the lecture laughed. And oh my god now I hate them.

I prefer anger and bitterness over smugness and arrogance
