If Atlantis indeed existed, we have to follow the facts. It was located behond the pilars of Hercules, nowadays Gibraltar, were the meditterenan ends and the atlantic ocean begins (thus the name Atlantis) therefore any claim that links it to greek islands, crete or whatever as to be discarted.
Another fact is that its mentioned as an vulcanic island, so any american location for it is hardly possible. The only islands past the Pilars of Hercules and that possible resemble are the Açores archipelago, Madeira or Canary islands, all vulcanic, rich in vegetation, water ways and temperate climates for agricultural were an ancient 10,000 civilization could have florished.
These islands are somewhat close to europe, the canaria islands behind quite close to the african coast, certainly possible of transversing with Triremes/ Biremes of the time, and Plato does metion the Athenians going to war vs Atlantis, thus we must deduct they made the sea trip across the pilars of hercules or had reports or eye-witnesses who did such a journey.
Miths are miths, but then again so Troy was, until a german archeologist found evidences of its location.
