Things you only just now realized

Is it the general concensus that sending him on a trade mission a better option?

i always do trade missions. the lump sum is more immediately useful and whatever CS you do this with could mean 30+ turns of extra bonuses and get you ally status. i forget what the lump sum actually is (ive gotten 500+g in vanilla i think) but it would take 50+ turns settled to make up for it and you wouldnt get the CS bonuses. but i so rarely get GMs they are very late in the game and usually gifted by a CS from the patronage policy, that or a must choice from Maya. Ive only maybe once naturally generated one.

I've had puppets spawn them. Doh!

Usually spend them on trade missions, for the reasons HR notes, but I recall having settled a couple that I got early (one was a Maya game). In your capital, with Commerce opener, Market, Bank and Stock Exchange, custom houses generate decent gold, but I usually have better uses for that tile than a custom house.

Puppets tend to spawn 80% of my GM, all because puppets default to prioritizing gold rather than anything else... ever!

I usually do trade missions. Only if I plan on closing Commerce will I plant them (IIRC, planted GM's get a nice bonus with Commerce closer, at least in G&K). And I only close Commerce if I am mostly on the coast and want the +3 :c5production: and have no other pressing needs (such as needing Rationalism for science or Order opener for instant happiness boost). In that case, I may close Commerce for the extra happiness from each luxury (a delayed happiness boost compared to Order opener), and if I do that, then those planted GMs make a nice chunk of change, enough to offset not going with a trade mission.

Pillaging heals your units 25 HP.

And with that info in hand, I started pillaging a lot more and it certainly reduced unit loss. :p

Pillaging wheat and farms help starve your (eventual) puppet cities down and reduce the unhappiness

Not so useless eh

After building a polder on a marsh, the game suggested that clearing the marsh would yield one more food. I figured I'd never know until I tried it so I experimentally chopped the marsh. The result? Bye bye polder, reload quick save.

just found out that submarines cant attack a city in GnK. also, they are resourceless. i thought they required oil. havent used them since vanilla. i knew they couldnt take a city cuz theyre ranged but they cant actually attack one either. they can only attack anything in the water. was a real bummer when i took 6 turns to move 5 subs into position around a city and then DoW only to realize I couldnt attack anything at all (they had no water units near that city).

i havent done squat with late game units so I really need to brush up on them since GnK. Planes and infantry and some eventual Rocket Artillery is about it. a lot of the side units that arent on diplo/sci tech path are totally foreign to me right now too.

Shock I and Accuracy I stack on Keshiks! I hard-built some horsemen as the Mongols in order to upgrade to Keshiks later. I ended up promoting them before upgrading, which I thought was a waste. It turns out that Keshiks still get the combat bonus from Shock (the "melee" promotion) in addition to the combat bonus from Accuracy. Of course, this still delayed getting the better promotions, but for Keshiks with the left side of Honor filled, this shouldn't be a huge issue.

I wonder if the same thing works in reverse, i.e. will upgrading a gatling gun to a mech infantry allow the mech infantry to gain bonuses from both ranged and melee promotions?

What a prick tis fella is

It was on an extremely rough map with only Alex as a neighbor, but its so rough you'd think it was Deity

He had already gotten his UU, but with no cash and a hostile fellow (me) as his neighbor he had no choice but to try.

I always think it's funny how the GG/GA are at the top of the army/navy, but a brute/galley can come along and take them out

And I also agree it would be cool if the GA had an equivalent ability to the GG to take ownership of water tiles and build an amphibious citadel.

I know this is off-topic, but I just love Smallfish's screenies. Always have something interesting that makes me feel like playing the game :)

I just noticed that City States below 0 but above -31 are shown as "Afraid", instead of "Angry". Not sure if they need to be intimidated by your military presence as well.

If you have workers on automate and switch a city to gold focus, they will spam trading posts over all your farms. Come late game I get lazy on city-management and often ignore my huge surplus of food even though I don't need it. This now helps out a ton in min/maxing my empire.

If I was paying attention, I should have known this a long time ago. Puppets are stuck on gold focus and automated workers spam trading posts there.

This also makes the Commerce finisher a bit more juicy. The bonus remains the same, but due to my laziness I was never getting the full benefit.

Nice it works for gold, but I even have them autobuild trading posts when I select food focus, unless maybe they only do that for hexes you can't build a +food improvement on.

Perhaps the automate formula has them build trading posts when you hit a certain surplus of food? To be honest, I don't have much experience with automated workers. I usually only turn it on once I hit railroads and by that time all tile improvements in my cities are already done.
