This IS a Conservative C2C MP game Thunderbrd! :p

Right, I've gotten that downloaded (at rev 9445)

So lets start here. You updated the Caveman2Cosmos SVN and it's at version 9445. Which is the very latest version.

So you open the folder and what do you see?

At the top is a .svn folder, which is then followed by an Assets folder, then Autolog, Docs, Private maps, etc on down the list.

All you need to do is select Everything But that top .svn folder.

Now with it all selected click Copy.

Go outside this whole directory and Make a New Folder anywhere you want even on your desktop which is probably the quickest.

Once you have the New Folder made, Open it. Then Paste what you have copied from the Caveman2Cosmos SVN.

This folder now contains the latest C2C version made. The on we want.

Now go to where you have the Caveman2Cosmos Mod located. This is my Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods. Make a Copy of that New Folder and Paste it into the BtS\Mods folder. Once it's there rename it to: C2C MP Cnsvr. This is now your Mod that we will play the Conservative game thru.

And since you are also in the progressive game just cut that New Folder and paste into the BtS\Mods folder as well. Rename it to what T-brd has said for his Pbem game : C2C MP Prgsv .

For each of these "new" C2C MP mods go to the C2C MP SVN and from each SVN\C2C MP\Save+TurnList\Cnsrv MP Game saves (this is my savegame folder) copy the User Settings folder in it and paste to appropriate new C2C MP xxxx Mod. Overwriting what is in that particular Mod.

Once both New C2C MP mods have been done this way you are ready to play when your turn comes up. The rest should be old hat for you.

This is news from out of nowhere to me. I didn't know about this at all.

Take a look at all the stuff that was added in. It was meant to help Steam users as well. But this StartC2C.bat file is a ticking timebomb. I personally Never put a bunch of the stuff that is below all the main Folders of C2C into my Game path.

Things like this .bat file or the C2CSteam link or even the UnitMasterFileCSV.csv. Most are extraneous to game play. And I don't need a .bat to help me load my game.

You are most wlecome. :)

All you need to do is select Everything But that top .svn folder.
You can select that too if you want to be able to update that copied repository directly as well.

Well now I wait to hear from Harrier.

I have downloaded the files, at the second attempt. (first one downloaded a very old SVN. I used the wrong SVN connection.)

Going to play my first turn now. Could not get on the system sooner as the wife was hogging it.

Edit:

It did not load I got the assets protected message. see below.

I may have done something wrong, though I can load the game normally. But I think it is because we have to move the "New_Cultures" folder individually. Hence the message.

If that is the case, and because the previous method did not work. I am willing to bow out. Just so you guys can get the game started. Next time maybe, when I have raided the Rainy day fund.

I remember those days. Glad they are long gone. ;)

As you posted while I was editing, read my previous post.

Did you follow my instructions of moving the New_Cultures folder from My_Mods to the My_Mods (unloaded) folder? Simple cut paste.

Also did you replace the User Settings folder (USF) when you made the C2C MP Cnsv Mod with the USF I placed in the Cnsv save game folder? This one is very important. And most likely why you are getting this error.

If you did not follow these steps then yes there is a problem, but it can be fixed. On the other hand if you Did do these steps and have these error msgs then something else is not right.

I must say though that you seem kind of eager to bail out. We are a patient bunch really. We've been at it for 4 years. But as always with everyone involved it is always the individual players choice to stay or not.

Your turn loads just fine on my end. here are the opening screenshots.

And no I did not save the turn just exited after I took the 2 screenies. So when you get your files fixed your turn will not look like the 2nd screenshot.

Late now, will check again tomorrow. But I think I did follow your instructions. Will repeat them again - to be sure.

NO, I do not want to bail out, even though it will be a challenge jumping up a few levels.

I was looking forward to the challenge.

Just did not want to stall this game from starting due to my obsolete computer system.

Don't worry about it. We're all going to be VERY patient during this setup stage. Understand that the process has changed a bit. Work through either Joe's instructions here or (if they are more clear for you) you can refer to my instructions in the progressive game thread (but there's one extra step in moving the module you have trouble with to MY_MODS(unloaded) ).

Don't bow out too quickly. We'll continue to work with you to make sure you get it down. We all had a learning curve here.

I have everything set up according to instructions. Mod folder named C2C MP Cnsvr. Moved New Cultures folder. Replaced default UserSettings with one from Cnsrv MP Game saves folder. Tried to load Harrier's turn, crashes in the same way his did. Thunderbrd, does the game load for you? How does it load for JosEPh but not for anyone else? Very odd.

Edit: As a note, I also tried loading the save game with the New Cultures folder in it's normal location and it still crashed. Thus that is not the problem.

As a related point, I created a single player game using the C2C MP Cnsvr mod and all of this game's settings, map, etc. I saved the game, and closed Civ4. Went to my single player games save folder, double clicked on the save, and it opened normally - unlike the previous version (v37.5).

Thus it is either something specifically PBEM related or some difference between JosEPh's install and mine.

Ok, it's happening to me as well. Are you setup and able to open the progresive game?

I have to suspect it may be the save itself or that something is different in the way joseph set things up and the steps we've been instructed to take.

Oh, had not thought to check that...

Progressive game save also crashes. The "black screen with error window behind it saying 'protected game' message" crash.
So if the game goes to another system other than the one that set it up then it crashes??? That's... very strange.

Even though C2C MP Cnsvr is a copy of Caveman2Cosmos just renamed, but with the User Settings Folder (USF) Only containing the CustomDomAdv Folder, Toffer's StartC2C.bat file overwrites any game started with C2C MP Cnsvr with what ever you have in your Main Caveman2Cosmos User Setting Folder (USF) (in this case what I have been using as my USF settings). Now while that does not present a problem right now, because the USF in my Main Caveman2Cosmos is an exact set for what I want for the Pbem game, this can cause problems down the road.

So I strongly suggest for the Main Caveman2Cosmos Mod that the StartC2C.bat be removed. I feel this needs to be done Asap on the Caveman2Cosmos SVN. I know Toffer meant it to help new or returning players but it can and will also cause Old previous versions of Caveman2Cosmos USFs, that these players may have saved, to be automatically written in and thus cause conflicts that will be reported as Bugs or failure to load posts.
But you're saying we should somehow isolate this file to a modmod that can be a fix for some who have had trouble but remove it from the core? If you see a problem I can go along with that but you should bring it up with Toffer.
This is all that the bat file contains:
Code:
cd ..\..
start "" "Civ4BeyondSword.exe" mod= mods\Caveman2Cosmos"
It only goes two folders up in the folder hierarchy and runs the main bts exe.
  1. Run bat from "...\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Caveman2Cosmos"
  2. The bat file only does what can easily be done from the command prompt (CMD.EXE) by a user, to go back two directories with "CD ..\.." from the directory that the bat is stored in. CD=Change Directory=Go to folder.
  3. By now the batch command prompt is looking in the folder "...\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword"
  4. It then runs the Civ4BeyondSword.exe that should be in that folder for every C2C player regardless of folder names and such. So in a manner of speaking the bat file only double clicks your Civ4BeyondSword.exe file.
    • Exception to the above statement: it would not work if the C2C mod is placed in the user documents mod folder "Username\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS".
I have no Idea why this would mess with user setting folders.

Because of #1. With this .bat file it, as you pointed out, is looking for Caveman2Cosmos. It loads Caveman2Cosmos. If this .bat is in a derivative Mod such as our 2 Pbem Mods it directs the Loading to the wrong Mod. That is why the 2 Pbem Mods must have this .bat file removed.

@All players,
Please remove the .bat file from both the C2C MP xxxx Mods. This should allow us to pass the savegames and not get the screen harrier did.

I will also double check (even though I know it is) the C2C MP Cnsv Mod to make sure that the New_Cultures is in fact in the My_Mods (unloaded). As should everyone else involved.

If we still have a problem I will Upload to my Dropbox acct the Complete C2C MP Cnsv Mod and then provide a Link so that all players involved in this game will have the Exact Same Mod with the exact same USF by downloading it thru the dropbox link.

EDIT: It looks like I will need to start a New game as well.

Removing it will not make any differance. The .bat file only runs if you type its name in or double click on it..
