I played. Nothing much happened. I spread some mining corp, teched flight and queued artillery. A small stack has landed outside one of the French cities. Built a ton of infra, mostly health buildings....
Spread Mining Inc to all remaining cities (18 still needed by my count), run specialists in Kyoto to spawn a non-Great Scientist for a Golden Age so that we can change civics anarchy-free, build multipliers in Kumbi Saleh, and units everywhere else.
Both Brennus and Bismark will 'talk peace' if that's of interest.
Sounds like a good plan. So my PPP will be something like:
1) Get a mining exec to every city
2) Kumbai Saleh gets the multipliers
3) 2 cities dedicated to missionaries spread from Kumbai
4) Every one else units and airports in Hastings and Canterbury so we can fly units in.
5) Take peace from Bismarck if interesting and kick Brennus behind so he will capitulate.
Of the two, personally I'd be looking at make peace with Brennus rather than Bismark given Bismark's territory looks more accessible to our navy, and Paris has the Mahabodhi.
Kyoto churning out Confucian Missionaries seems barely cost-effective, and only so if most missionaries actually succeed in their efforts to spread the faith. I'm not really sure on this one.
Note also that without a few strategically positioned Forts around 'the poles', we can't get our navy from one ocean to the other.
I played the next round according to plan for 11 turns. I teched, artillery, electrity and industrialism at light speed. Lots of infra and lots of units. We made peace with Brennus and Ragnar for nice rewards. Bismarck has lost 2 cities and a 30 units or so so far. I played it safely but he is not amassing a SoD for some reason. Which is ok, so that the next player will have a lot of conquering
So what did we get?
Spoiler:
Thank you Bismarck for a very nice city.
Spoiler:
Thanks even more for this one Very nice city.
Our next GA will come for sure from the following city:
Spoiler:
I am running 2 more GP's here right now and I build the NE and the NP there. This is grand GP farm. I am running 10 specialists over here.
Spoiler:
Our army in Paris
Spoiler:
Our army in Tours
Spoiler:
And our third army ready to strike the next city. Reinforcements are on the way.
So the next one, enjoy warring and conquering Bismarck.
Fired off the Golden Age and adopted Universal Suffrage and Theocracy.
Completed Fascism (built Mount Rushmore in Nicomedia) and ran at 0% for much of the turnset, but eventually researched Radio.
We struggled a bit against Bismark on a couple of occasions with the troops that we had on hand, but essentially prevailed, capturing Lyons, Marseilles, Orleans and Rouen. He is willing to capitulate to us (indeed he has been for several turns). At the moment we've got an adequate but unimpressive force available to take Bismark's northern cities (troops in and around Orleans are a bit beaten up) whereas we've got more plentiful troops available in the south end.
Ragnar went WHEOOHRN about three turns ago.
We have 135 Tanks and 13 Bombers at the moment, although a fair proportion of the Tanks are on Transports or waiting for collection. I did build some extra Transports, but more would have been handy.
We've been running specialists in select cities to try and spawn enough points for a Golden Age. Timbuktu spawned a Great Scientist, so we're running Engineers out of Nagasaki, and other specialists in Osaka and Kyoto. It's a bit of a lottery, and it's unlikely to have much impact on the game, even if we do get enough Great People in time (three needed).
Very good progress. Tanks here we come. We only have 135 of them hehe. To be honest, I never had an army this big in my normal games. This is really in the mop up state. Should have focussed more on armies in my turn. I just can't stand to see that we can build a library in one turn and build an artillery instead for 2 turns
Very nice turnset Cam and way to go on army building. I say capitulate Bismarck, get his techs and then get on with Brennus. We can ferry in troops like mad with 6 tanks per turn and then with Bismarck as a vasal we can also use his cities to airship in troops if I am not mistaken. Boom Shakala!!!
Great work team. Indeed a lot of fun. Thanks for participating. Afterthoughts on the game:
No slavery and no free tech path slowed the game down a lot. At one point I was even afraid we wouldn't be able to get something done at all. In hindsight the the spot 1W would have been better but we had a nice city to the west now. The no slavery was harsh. There were so many times I wanted to whip cities to get units out, monuments up, libraries online, etc... Tech path is crazy like this. No freedom at all. No detour to lit, no aest trade bait, no free GA from music, etc.... No just 40 turns of researching education while other civs do have construction/currency/CoL etc..... I also never build this little world wonders. And the NE just build in 1900 was just woooot madness.
Drafting is incredible powerfull with this setup though. CI CGI DrI redcoats are nothing to sneeze at and that 3 every turn. Amassing an army through drafting is great. I have to admit I never drafted this much but boy is it powerfull. Getting 2 units from 1 city the same turn is just wow. I am going to do this a lot more.
The combo agressive/protective was nice in this setup but spiritual might have been even better with all the civic changes everywhere. Especially with drafting it is easier to draft for 5 turns or so and switch back to economical civics like bureau.
The only mistake I made with the rules was that I didn't mention that we had to declare on the whole continent and stay at war with the whole continent. Thank god I didn't otherwise it might have been a bit harder. In the end we would have prevailed but it would have taken some sweet extra time.
The approach of Cam could have been interesting. Spy economy. Build the great wall and just expand. Use spies to infiltrate and steal techs. That one spy we got that we send to Roosie was one of the best things that happened to us. A great spy early is worth more then 5 GP this way.
Well thanks again people and hope you enjoyed the game. I know I did
He does cap easily! Well done Cree! Well done team!
'Yeah' - I did wonder if we were better off going with a pure espionage route to keep up with the AI, and limiting all of our early generation to Great Spies through The Great Wall, but we fuddled through OK in the end.
I must say that I was rather struck by the odd combinations that were tossed up of some of the AI leaders and the tribes that they inherited ... Brennus had conflicts with Rome during his day, Roosevelt and the Japanese (WWII), Mehmed and the Byzantines (taking of Constantinople), Bismark and the French (Franco-Prussian War). Anyway, it struck me as a little weird.
Thanks 'roy' for setting it up and leading us throughout.
Also ... I thought that the AI was surprisingly slow at getting some key tech's that would have helped it enormously, and went after some most unusual pathways instead.
1) the great wall-barb pressure would have been ridiculous with the untamed antiarctic below us
2) The great wall again-our great spy against roosy keep us in the race tech wise in the classic era
3) Diplo with Mehmed-keeping him on our side was huge and made the wars with the north on a narrow front and easy
4) Having low unit prob targets of Roosy and Hatty who teched well-made our wars of conquest easy.
5) War and slow teching on the other continent-made our end game wars at a tech lead.
Imagine this same game with The Great Wall prohibited?
If the AI got some key techs first like rifling, combustion, industrialism, etc... we would have had an incredible hard time, but we were lucky. Nice call on the setups Cam, indeed weird hehe.
I think we would have had problems if we had to follow the rules as I had them intended at start (declaring war on the continent and having to stay at war untill the continent was conquered) would have made this a whole lot more difficult.
Overall thx team for all the energy and enthousiasm. It was a pleasure working with you guys.
