Ballads tell stories, and here are three of my all time western favorites, going back several decades! Marty Robbins was my favorite western singer growing up in Texas... I'll only his most familiar song here.
EL PASO
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rose's Cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl
Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell
One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I love
So in anger
I challenged his right for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor
Just for a moment I stood there in silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts race through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run
Out through the back door of Rose's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one; he looked like he could run
Up on his back and away I did ride
Just as fast ...
As I could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out thru the badlands of New Mexico
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone in life nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young lady
My love is stronger than my fear of death!
I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And it last here
I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rose's Cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more

Shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me
I've have to make it to Rose's back door
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I'm getting weary, unable to ride
But my love for
Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest
From out of nowhere, Felina has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss and Felina goodbye
Johnny Horton had many great ballads, and these two are about the most fun and memorable! The Bismark was, of course, the mighty German battleship that gave the British such consternation in WW II...
SINK THE BISMARK
In may of nineteen forty-one the war had just begun...
The Germans had the biggest ships
That had the biggest guns!
The Bismark was the fastest ship
That ever sailed the seas...
On her deck were guns as big as steers
And shells as big as trees!
Out of the cold and foggy night
Came the British ship the Hood
And ev'ry British seaman -- he knew and understood
They had to sink the Bismark the terror of the sea
Stop those guns as bid as steers
And those shells as big as trees!
We'll find that German battleship
That's makin' such a fuss!
We gotta sink the Bismark
'Cause the world depends on us!!
Hit the decks a-runnin' boys
And spin those guns around...
When we find the Bismark we gotta cut her down!
The Hood found the Bismark and on that fatal day
The Bismark started firin' fifteen miles away
We gotta sink the Bismark was the battle sound
But when the smoke had cleared away
The mighty Hood went down!
For six long days and weary nights
They tried to find her trail
Churchill told the people put ev'ry ship a-sail
'Cause somewhere on that ocean
I know she's gotta be
We gotta sink the Bismark to the bottom of the sea
We'll find that German battleship
That's makin' such a fuss!
We gotta sink the Bismark
'Cause the world depends on us!!!
Hit the decks a-runnin' boys
And spin those guns around...
When we find the Bismark we gotta cut her down!
The fog was gone the seventh day
And they saw the mornin' sun
Ten hours away from homeland
The Bismark made its run!
The admiral of the British fleet said
Turn those bows around...
We found that German battleship
And we're gonna cut her down.
The british guns were aimed
And the shells were comin' fast...
The first shell hit the Bismark
They knew she couldn't last!
That mighty German battleship is just a memory
Sink the Bismark was the battle cry
That shook the seven seas!
We found that German battleship
Was makin' such a fuss
We had to sink the Bismark
'Cause the world depends on us
We hit the deck a-runnin' and
We spun those guns around
We found the mighty Bismark
And then we cut her down!
We found that german battleship
Was makin' such a fuss
We had to sink the Bismark
'Cause the world depends on us
We hit the deck a-runnin' and
We spun those guns around
We found the mighty Bismark
And then we cut her down!!

In 1812, America and Britain began a war with each other for the last time. New Orleans was a strategic location, controlling the mighty Mississippi River, and the British had the best army in the world... the Superpower of the era. BTW, Andrew Jackson later became President. (misspellings are intentional because of the "down home" 1800's style of English; "seed" means "seen")
THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS
In eighteen fourteen, we took a little trip...
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Missisip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And they caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans!
We fired our guns and the British kept a comin'
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago!
We fired once more and they began a running...
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
We looked down the river and we seed the British come!
And there must have been a hundred of them beating on the drum!!
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring...
We stood behind our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.
We fired our guns and the British kept a comin'
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago!
We fired once more and they began a running...
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
Old Hickory said we could take em by surprise
If we didn't fire a musket till we looked em in the eyes
We held our fire till we seed their face well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave em well..
We fired our guns and the British kept a comin'
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago!
We fired once more and they began a running...
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
And they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go!
They ran so fast the hounds couldn't catch em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
We fired our cannons till the barrels melted down...
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round!
We filled his head with cannon balls and powdered his behind --
And when we touched the powder off, the 'gator lost his mind!!!!
