Time to sue some cops

So this college football player was projected as a first round NFL draft pick. Expected contract; four years with a total value of around ten million dollars, with at least a couple million of that in up front cash that would be his no matter how things turned out with the team that drafted him.

Instead, he went undrafted, and signed a free agent contract. Three years at about a million and a half, total, with $21,000 up front.

What happened? The week of the draft police announced that he was "wanted for questioning." He committed no crime, apparently. They never even named him as a suspect.

Their investigation, and the extremely public way they went about it, cost this man millions of dollars. Should they be held accountable for that? I know that on some level he should be thankful they didn't just shoot him, or roll him to death in the back of a van, but doesn't this seem egregious enough in its own way?

Do you have a link to an article?

If he's that good, can't he still get a job as a pro player? If not, how good is he really?

Having said that, there just isn't enough information here to blame or not to blame the police for this. IMO

Pro sports salaries are high for dumb reasons in the first place, why should I care if certain players get reduced salaries for also dumb reasons?

Rhiiiiiiite. Since you being you grants you immunity, why should you be concerned about what the cops do to us lesser folk.

To whom are you referring, and is there a link to this story?

I don't usually do links, since I find that when people provide a "link as evidence" it is not necessarily going to be unbiased. I'd rather people find different takes on the story than what I've already seen. The guy's name is La'el Collins, he played for LSU and just signed with the Dallas Cowboys. That should give you plenty of sources I think. If not let me know.

He did. At approximately 8.5 million dollars less than he was expected to get. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel overwhelmingly bad for a 21 year old kid signing a three year contract for a million and a half...but it's still a huge loss from the ten million he could have had if the cops hadn't screwed him.

Were the cops Giants fans? Or Eagles fans? Or 49ers fans? Or Rasists fans?

I would assume they are Cowboys fans...since the ultimate beneficiaries are the Cowboys. They got a first round draft pick caliber player for a free agent contract price.

Yeah, but without more information, I can't say whether the cops might have been in the wrong or not. So there isn't really much to talk about, IMO.

This got ninja'd.

You mean like earning the companies they work for millions upon millions of dollars?

I make quite a lot less than $500k.

You mean like earning the companies they work for millions upon millions of dollars?

Yes. People should feel about the same about supporting pro sports as they feel about supporting reality tv.

Yet still enough to feel like bad things that happen to other people at the hands of the cops can't possibly happen to you. Or is your perceived immunity based on something other than money?

Ok Devils advocate here: - what if said player did something but completely got away with it :nuke:

We can only discuss what you bring to the table. "I don't do links" is a poor excuse for not putting together a worthy OP and thread.

If you were anyone else I would give the two word response; "search engine," but since you are you:

Linky.

Should they be held accountable for that?

No. The cops should be doing their job and solving murders.

If you want to blame someone for this guy losing a cushy contract than complain about the Rams, not the police.

Then you are suggesting that punishing people who may have gotten away with something is okay. Now, how do you propose to differentiate between those who got away with something and those who actually didn't do anything?

Innocent until proven guilty (beyond all reasonable doubt).

Sure, the cops could announce whatever they want about me, but I don't work for the NFL. If anyone is at fault here, it's the employer.
