Beautiful! I think we should encourage Donsig to adopt the appelation Donsig, Grand Vizier of the Ironic and Iroqi and Way-Too-Cool-Dudes. That should stir the pot!

I'll start on a scroll, but I'd like suggestions for wording.

The only issue is we cannot actually give them Republic right away since they do not have Code of Laws. If that makes them nervous, I would be willing to gift them Code of Laws this turn, but I would think the scroll could say:

1. As soon as TNT completes Construction, TNT will provide Construction to MIA, and MIA will provide Literature, Polytheism, Map Making, and Code of Laws to TNT (Am I forgetting anything?)

2. If TNT and MIA receive different free Middle Age techs, then the following turn, MIA will send Republic and MIA's free Middle Age tech to TNT, and TNT will send TNT's free Middle Age tech to MIA.

3. If TNT and MIA receive the same free Middle Age tech, then the following turn, MIA will gift Republic to TNT.

4. None of the above-named techs (including both teams' free Middle Ages tech) may be traded, gifted, or sold to KISS and/or Donuts by either MIA or TNT.

We can explain in a letter that we have no desire to withhold Republic, but the game will not let us give it to them until they have Code of Laws.

Alternatively:

1. On their next turn, MIA will gift Code of Laws to TNT.

2. As soon as TNT completes Construction, TNT will provide Construction to MIA, and MIA will provide Literature, Polytheism, Map Making, and Republic to TNT (Am I forgetting anything?)

3. If TNT and MIA receive different free Middle Age techs, then the following turn, MIA will send MIA's free Middle Age tech to TNT, and TNT will send TNT's free Middle Age tech to MIA.

4. None of the above-named techs (including both teams' free Middle Ages tech) may be traded, gifted, or sold to KISS and/or Donuts by either MIA or TNT.

If war with KISS wasn't certain before, then this deal definitely slams the door on any hope of KISSMIA working together...

Looks great – but seems like we’re forgetting one thing…

we have one small request. For our people to maximize our brains, we need to build buildings which store books. We believe they are called libraries. We kindly ask of you to gift us Literature now, with the condition the trade deal will go as planned, once we discover Construction in 2 turns or later if you wish to postpone the main part of the trade. In return we are willing to help you out with an immediate loan of 60 gold. This amount can be paid back when the main construction deal is completed.

I think it’s best that we go along with this (even though it only get’s TNT Literature 1 turn sooner. I don’t smell a double cross here, and TNT wants those libraries early for some reason. Maybe they are running out of time on a pre-build?

Anyway – it hardly matters. I say we give literature, hold the 60 gold as collateral, and then give it back when the trade is finalized.

Now – if we want to do it like the treaty currently reads, that’s ok, but we should at least offer some explanation to TNT. I’d hate to start this alliance out by ignoring their request… they were very polite!

EDIT: maybe that proviso is in there because they are worried about how long we want to delay the trade - if we make it clear that we no longer want a delay - then this will be moot. Either way - we need to talk to them about it.

Yeah, I think that early-Lit thing is only there because as far as they know we want to delay the trade. But it's my understanding that we no longer want to delay.

When we send the scroll we can include a letter explaining that delaying really wasn't going to simplify things on our end, so here's Lit along with everything else.

Their offer, as you say, was exceptionally polite. It's nice to have someone other than Provo talking for them.

....Just saw Chamnix' edit. His second way works a little better, I think. But we should gift both Code of Laws and Literature. We can hold the collateral, as well, as long as it doesn't hold things up.

I'll try and whip out a second scroll just in case.

One thing I'm having second thoughts about: By restricting eachother to not being able to trade or sell our freebie techs, we are guaranteeing tensions with the other teams. I'm not being daft here, but if we were allowed the freedom to trade or, better yet, sell those techs, we could avert unnecessary tension.

Of course, I'm writing this about 16 turns before a war that we see no way to avert, but the point nonetheless deserves comment.

I'm not proposing that we don't agree to the deal as it stands. After all, if TNT agrees with what I just mentioned, then consenting adults can change their minds, and emend the trade treaty. But let's not rock the boat yet.

Looking good - I didn't really intend that "Am I missing anything" to be part of the official parchment... I just wanted someone on our end to check the save and make I didn't forget anything.

We have but one question before finalizing the parchment - we have decided that it is unnecessary on our end to delay the trade at all. We would love to learn the secrets of large buildings ASAP and are eager to share our knowledge with you sooner as well. You mentioned a desire to learn Literature early - given that we no longer wish to delay the Construction trade, is it acceptable to include Literature as part of that deal as it is only 2 turns away, or would your people require that knowledge even sooner than that?

Either is fine with us - we are only asking because our scribes require direction.

@peter grimes - yes, as I mentioned this seals the end of KISSMIA. The only way out I see (other than agreeing to emend with TNT) is to tell KISS (after they ask) that we had to promise TNT not to sell them Construction in order to get it, and we really needed it. KISS caused all the tension on our continent and tried to outbid us for Construction, so they have to understand our hand was forced. However, we can tell KISS that if they are really interested in KISSMIA resuming, then once they research Construction, we can try to arrange a way to research through the Middle Ages together ASAP.

It is basically an effort to buy us time because we are going to war with KISS, but a delay would be nice...

EDIT - on your second scroll, Literature has to be removed from either #1 or #3.

And I agree with Chamnix regarding KISS. That alliance is dead and they killed it. Anything we can say to buy more time is great… but war is gonna happen. KISS will start it directly, or KISS will start it indirectly when we attack them because of our sprawling defense budget.

I tried to copy the Font you had done the original scrolls in, and the closest I could find on the version of Photoshop I use is ITC Zapf Chancery

Fe had a chat with Robi, in which Robi gave details of the recent battlefield casualties:

5 horsemen and 5 immortals were eliminated, while dnuts lost a MW, and several were critically injured. This report alluded to the possiblity of some immortals having escaped, but that report should be treated as of dubious quality.

The consequences of the losses:
TNT has lost ~240 Military power points, assuming all were veterans.

I am curious to see the military pop head this turn
