The game is half life 2 episode 2.

http://www.steampowered.com/status/ep2/ep2_stats.php

It shows you the average amount of time it took players to complete the game. Average number of deaths sorted by chapter. And even where people were killed.

Does anyone think this is where valves business model is going? You can expect that information like this is invaluable to game developers. They dont have to rely on conjecture and anecdote anymore. With this they can actually see their work in progress and draw their own conclusions from it.

I think if nothing else its interesting.

They've been using Steam to record a huge amount of information for several years or so now. Many other developers also have similar systems, FPS games like to brag about how many times players have died, how many bullets they've fired, etc. Valve often uses that info to tweak its MP games too.

Yes but Valve can sell the competitors info. Its like the google of gaming

That info really wouldn't be of much use to the competition, unless they were trying to make the EXACT same product.

Also a lot of this info is readily available, I recall downloading a small program years ago for TF2 that showed you a huge amount of your own stats from the game's data. I'm sure htey use some data like player counts when discussing using Steam with other developers and publishers to get them to use Steamworks and/work be on the Steam store, but I doubt they could actually sell most of this data (if they're even allowed to).
