Today I Learned #4: Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

TIL (okay, yesterday I learned) that the Moon has an atmosphere.

It's very thin, but it's there.
How many times have we been told by the media that the moon has no atmosphere? Were they just all afraid of telling us about it when they did not know why it was there?

The moon has always created its own atmosphere and we have "enjoyed" it for millennia. Whatever they have "just" discovered is nothing compared to our moon's actual impact.

Lover's moon
Lunacy
Werewolves
Blue moons
Tides

The moon at the window"

The only scientifically relevant part of this list is tides. Tides were critical to the evolution of life on Earth.

As for why I'm so interested in this... apparently it's something that's been known since the early '70s. It's not something that we ever learned about in science classes (at least not here). I find that annoying, not because there's some "conspiracy" about it, just that it's a fact that was known and didn't make it into the science curriculum. It's not like there weren't opportunities to slip it into a textbook or reference book.

TIL:

Kirin Holdings will begin online sales of "Electric Salt Spoon", a spoon that uses electricity to enhance salty and umami taste*1, on May 20.

With this new business, Kirin aims to solve social issue of excessive salt intake.

The primary reference for that is 'The 3rd Neurostimulation Interface Research Meeting. March 2023: "Influence on umami taste of the electric taste waveform that intensifies the saltiness of low-sodium foods"'. That conference has no hits on google other than this sales pitch. I do not believe that is real science.

Maybe not, but it's Japan where all novelty products are possible.

I've seen this before, coming from more serious sources.
e.g. https://www.sciencealert.com/new-electric-spoon-can-zap-tongue-with-extra-flavour (from 2014)
It is hard to find anything published, tbut that guy did publish this in July. Then his kit looked like this, and now they are selling a spoon? That is fast work.

Maybe @amadeus can buy one and tell us it it works.

I’m just amazed at their fancy toilets. Too bad it can be prone to getting hacked and/or a leaky seal seeping moisture into the electronic component shorting it out.

Almost ¥20,000, which is about $120 I think at current exchange rates.
Well, that is expensive for a spoon even if it allows one to use less salt.

Could people not just use less salt?

Along with diabetes and cutting down on sugar, I had to cut down on salt. So most of the time I use pepper instead. It works, and my doctor approved.

The spoon adds the salty taste without any salt.
