Tom's Unit Factory

For play purposes say the eruption didn't happen. Or had a smaller impact.

Oops! We're thread-jacking.

:nono: This is thread-jacking. The nearest I could find to a relevant (and very interesting) map of the Miocene:

Tom, it just occured to me that you might be able to convert units from the 40k Dawn of War (I or II) games that could be of great use to the 40k Mod team. I'm not sure if any work is still being done on that mod and a huge numbet of units were already made for it by aaglo and others but I know they have gaps in the unit lines too. I don't know the format those games use but might be worth checking out. Virote Considine was/is the main person working on it I believe if you want to ask if it's still a going concern. I know you have a lot of units to do already so no big deal if you pass on it.

Cheers

Nick

While I love seeing an almost daily new unit from you Tom I'll be very happy when you get the Beta of CoMM3 done too! So it's really a win/win situation either way for me.

The succubus is fantastic. I'll definitely have a use for that.

Cheers,

Nick

And that does it for conversions for now...

Aww. It was always nice to see what new goodies popped up here. :( But of course we all understand. :D Thanks so much for all the conversions that you've done.:goodjob:

(But, please, no! - Spare us the Incubus! )

A half-naked Incubus has been on the top of the list of CFC most wanted units for ages! I, myself, have no desire to make one though!

Once the beta is released, everything will be posted to the DB, which includes quite a many units and recolours. ;) And I may still do an occasional one in the meantime.

Just as a note: finally figured out how to attach objects (weapons, etc) in 3ds the correct way. It is amazing how simple it actually was to do so, but the function to do it was hidden deep deep deep within the abyss of the program where you wouldn't even think to look.

I'll be able to do many of the conversions I have been avoiding so far. And while I am doing my fireball demon unit, I will look into adding some fire/smoke effects as well, to enhance future conversions.

EDIT: I have figured out how to make flames and smoke... I now realize that some of the objects in the original units are for this purpose, but they do not function because of differences of the NIF format they are in and 3ds probably. I can now fix them or add to them.

For my Gog and Magog units, here is the Magog with the fireball in hand added. My first particle effect of fire creation, and so it will be fine-tuned; but the same can be done with smoke effects, etc. Even snow, or anything.

I should be able to make my own Magic Spells now and render them, since the basis is the same.

Obviously the flame is too big here, and spitting up too much, but it should make for some interesting effects to be added to any unit.

I think it's ready to render:

I may release this; just so if anyone can give any tips or suggestions... it helps me to know what is good/not good; and what to avoid or make slight changes to in future workings of using particle effects for fire (and snow, magic effects, smoke, etc).

This will be the Magog unit for CoMM3. And, I believe I can handle doing any of the Atlantica Online units to their fullest potential, adding effects as such to make them more unique and lifelike. I may, do one of the steampunk units to test out the smoke effects in any free time I have.

:worship: Tom, that is by far and away the best magical attack I have ever seen on a Civ unit. You are the king! :worship:

On a side note I am again trying to finish my Infinitum unit conversion. I've seen some new info on palette creation in GIMP for units and I'm trying again. I know you gave up on infinitum units for verious reasons but if I can get it to work I might try and do some more of them. Your newer units from 3d games are far superior to the infinitum units of course but I don't think I'm up to learning to how use 3ds max at present.

Cheers,

Nick

EDIT: Damn, same old problem. I have the storyboards, I generate a new storyboard with Flicster. I open the .bmp storboard and apply the palette I've made then I save it as AttackA.pcx replacing the flicster generated file. I open the storyboard again in flicster. Then if I click on view animation or try to export to a flic file flicster crashes. I wonder if this is not to do with palettes at all. Could it be to do with frame sizes or something like that? I'm setting the frame size to width 90 height 95 which is what each frame is when I measure it in GIMP (minus the black boarder, which I am changing to magenta). Frame count is 16 as in the storyboards.

Here's the Magog... I'll try to get it up and posted tomorrow.

You are using Flicster v. 18 right? Prev version had a problem with keeping the animation time 0, causing a crash. Only other thing I commonly run into is when I put the wrong frame count in, but that doesn't always cause I crash. If you want to post it or send it, I can test it out to see if I get a crash also.

BTW, those are still great units to convert. I am glad to hear you are taking them up. Doing those taught me ALOT about the whole process. There are many there that would be much appreciated and welcomed!
