Tom's Unit Factory

These units size is a little too large for my taste. Sea Dragon came in at a whopping 6 MB. Not good. And that was even after I initially cut the frames down by x3 from the original.

To get them down, I will go ahead and try to keep frame count per FLC at 15 to 20. Animations won't be as smooth as 30-40 frames per FLC, but I think the decreased size of the units will be wanted to keep mod sizes down, and downloads quicker.

Amazing!

I'm sure you'll be able to find the right balance between size and animation.

I'd be fine with a 300mb unit just keep them looking nice
I agree with bigdog5995... Hard Drives are much larger now and most people can handle larger sizes for units they want.
If the size can be smaller without taking away the better animations, of course that would be good but don't cut back just to save size :)

Tom can you tell me where you converted your newest units(exemple Golshan)?
I dont find them on infinitum

My main concern was mod sizes being increased by very large unit sizes. That unit uses a 240x180 size, which was a factor. I'll try to keep each unit under 2 MB depending on the unit and if quality is not compromised.

Tom can you tell me where you converted your newest units(exemple Golshan)?

I'm no longer doing Infinitum unit conversions... There are many problems with them, mostly with correctly their offsets (not all are like that, but many). To get them centered properly, majority of them require fixing the offset of each individual direction of each animation. So for 7 animations, that is 56 corrections needed to be done with the storyboard. Very time-consuming.

Chances are, the Infinitum units were converted from the games to work with Diablo 2, so they probably require the animations to be as they are.

Eventually I will continue to do the units from Infinitum, but by converting the 3d models from the games themselves. Doing this will make a better end unit, and it will have shadows as well.

These units are conversions from 3d Models. They use NIF / KF files (which are the same graphics format that Civ 4 uses, different format version). The game they came from should be listed on each unit page. Golshan came from Kohan 2.

---------------

In addition, the standard Anti-Alias setting was making these units come out a little more blurred than they should have, I have adjusted it so the unit stays looking crisp.

For Civ Colors, it is tough to add a civ color band on some units, like the next:
Raptor.jpg

I cannot add new pieces to the unit (not enough 3ds skill), but I can modify the texture to add it in. In this case, either the whole unit can be made civ coloured (pink raptors running around), or a blue colored band, a specific piece of the raptor (back, tail, any piece or portion of the raptor, etc) could be added somewhere.

What do you think is the best? I am not sure. I could just do it similar to the dinos in PTW.

EDIT: Going off how some of the PTW Dinos were done... Something like this may work pretty well.

civ colored stripes and whatnot are way nicer looking

and that dinosaur looks absolutely terrific

As you're going with modern notions ( ) with feathers, perhaps embedding Civ colors in a bold pattern in the feathers would be a hoot (just as one might, say, do the same for a triceratop's crest).

As far as quality goes -- What bigdog said :goodjob:

Best,

Oz

Strangely, all the units that they show on the Atlantica Online site, don't seem to be all there in the files...

Many of the units are 'color variations', but the texture files for these simply do not exist (at least not where the large majority of them are); or unless they are under different names in different directories. For instance the only other Raptor colors that were there were this:

RaptorF2.jpg

Either the program has pre-set recolors it uses, or there is some files elsewhere that color these things. Regular recoloring could be used instead. The Red color of the Raptor may be a bit bright for a dinosaur.

Or the texture files could just be recolored as well pre-render.

Here is the unit I am working on next, Alexandra. I can't find the Bow texture anywhere, so I will have to make my own. Bow is not placed properly yet (might even be upside down).

ah ok. Well keep doing these convertion, they are awesome.
I will often check this thread
