Wow, almost 70% of the Civilization 3 players out there are over 21. That's a neat statistic, especially given the persistent meme that "games are for kids."

Just turned 23 two weeks ago, and going strong,

who says kids are only under 20? :p

It happening to the entire video game industry -- the people who grew up with Atari (classical, not modern ) and arcades are now in 30s-40s, married w/ childern. The Nintendo (NES-SNES) set, meanwhile, are slowly moving out of childhood and are perparing to enter the "real" world dispite the surealness of it.

This explans alot of treads in computer and video games, like a shorting in game leanths (people need to live in the "real world"), more "mature" themes in video games, the industry's realance on squeals and fanchnies, etc.

I've been thinking a lot about this, myself. I grew up with the Atari 2600. Had an Atari 800XL computer... learned basic on an Apple ][e. So playing video games is perfectly natural to me. But I think about my parents, and grandparents, and they don't play. Well, my mom & dad played Super Breakout, and Backgammon. But nothing obcessive like me and Civ. And come to think of it, my grandma has my original gameboy, and plays Vegas something or other on it....but they played lots of board games and card games.... So I guess my point is, we are replacing board/card games with video games. I mean, really, there's not much difference between the two, right?

I thought I must have been crazy, I play this to relax from work ! I figured that I would have been totally laughed at for this ! Here I find out practically everybody is my age !

I am not quite your age, but I do think that computer games are becoming a more mainstream form of entertainment. 10 years ago when people like myself started playing Civ, MOO, and X-COM, we were considered nerds. Now everything is cool and there is even a network for games, G4, even though its very console heavy.

Sir Schwick, you are fooling yourself. We are still considered nerds. There are just more of us, we are better paid, and raising our kids to follow in our footsteps.

Age is relative. Monday I begin medical school and today I found out that I am the oldest person in my class. I am pretty sure I am not the oldest person here. . . Ooops, I just checked and I'm not even close. I am about 10 years younger than my wife. Computers and computer games have had the reputation of being a young "man's" game, but obviously this is changing.

Besides, I figure being a computer game addict helps balance out the fact that I find most rap music to be nothing but bone-jarring noise. ("Goddam kids! Turn off that noise!!" See? I sound just like my grandfather. So I just turn up my Bruce Sprinsteen REEEEAL loud . . .) On one side I'm 15 on the other I'm 80 and that averages out to 47. Which means I got another 11 years to go before I have to find a new juvenile behavior.

I just turned 40 this week.
In my younger days I preferred chess, and I am not the only one to see the simililarities between that game and civ3, so I can't really not see why anybody should be too old. Fortunately my wife sees it that way also.

I just turned 13 last week.

I found this game when I was 9, actually I didn't find it, my big brother showed me how to play civ II and I've been hooked ever since. Ever since the first time I played the game, I've been captivated by the tactics and planning that must be implemented when playing. That's what I love about it, and I don't understand how some people can say Civ is too advanced/complicated/"smart" for kids.

I'am 29 years old and i play civ from the time it came out to now civ3/conquest. I've started with commodore 64 and the amazing 'Sid Meier -- Pirates!' and strategical games followed my live until now. The next 30 years can come if nothing happens.

18 here...actually I don't play civ very much anymore, there are just so many different things that take my mind off civ-friends,my girlfriend,school(12-th grade :S ),and in summer work...

My wife and kid call me a nerd constantly :crazyeye: , I'm almost 40 and I
think it is kinda funny ;) . Civ is just plain good fun! :king:

I'm 16, been playing Civ since I was...let me think...15. How the time flies.
I love strategy games like Civ, but I also enjoy just about every genre, from platforming to stealth (as you may have realized from my Username).
I've been playing video games since I was around 8. I loved playing Pinball, Yar's Revenge, Slot Racers, and those Combat games on Atari 2600.

:crazyeye: I'm 55, and I work 11 hrs a day, and go to college, and run the hardest civ I can run just to get frustrated ! I play probably 2-3 hours, 4-5 nites a week ! Try Warhammers Conquest mod ! its fantastic. Run it on a 2.6Gig with accel. These critters look like they are running all the time ! :p :crazyeye:     [dance] :wavey: groucho

Wow - that's hard core.

This thread is older than some of the civ players here....

I have a post somewhere in the first 38 pages. I wonder what my post count was back then.
