Makes it easy to play with a busy class schedule, work, and a wife.

Conciliating Civ with life is difficult. But the guilty is who ever made the day with only 24h a day!!!

(I am writing this when I should be working)

I'm 16. My brother is 10. My father is about 45. We all play (though my brother is exceedingly inept, and my father has an obsession with Archipelago maps and is a perfectionist, so he has yet to play anything higher than Monarch, in spite of the fact that he has the skill to play and win on Demigod at least).

I agree with whoever it was on one of the pages way back that it is greatly encouraging to see folk under the age of 12 playing Civ. All the Civs and especially CivIII Conquests are great little history lessons.

For just one example, the Age of Discovery Conquest reminded me of the importance that banking played in the growth of colonialism and when I switch to a Protestant govt as Spain suddenly my Catholic brothers in France and Portugal disliked me, reminding me of the religious tensions in Western Europe. These are all small points which remind or teach people of subtle historical dynamics which influence global politics today. If I had children I would have no problem with them playing this game (in moderation) - whereas I would have HUGE problems with my kid playing Grand Theft Auto for example or MMORPGs where they might meet some pervert and constantly live in some bizarre fantasy world.

Anyway, I am 27 - have been playing since Civ 1, on and off when friends have played. However I have only become more addicted to Civ than smoking when I purchased CivIII a few months ago and then Conquests a month ago. I tried playing some MMORPGs but got fed up of them quickly (the grind sets in fast) and they are also way too detached from reality for me to remain sane playing them.

Something else worth adding: I got back to playing Civ very intensely when I changed career and was forced to move back with my parents at the age of 26. In other words I took up Civ again at a bad time in my life. Now that I have sorted my finances out and am back on track to move out again I feel I may well drop playing Civ in favour of more real life.

Point is: I generally play Civ when I'm feeling a bit down or lost. It fills up the gap and takes my mind of things, allowing me to get that 'God feeling' the game is designed to give. Any others out there like this?

I have been playing strategy games since before S&T (magazine where the centerfold was a game). My son has sworn off Civ for the third time - too time consuming. Good thing I am not retired or I might not do anything else.

I started with wargames the classic way - Waterloo! 'Round about 1972 or so... and, yes, I'm anxiously awaiting retirement. Will probably do nothing but golf in the morning and play Civ 8 for the rest of the day.

I still have some of those old S&T games. Very occasionally, I'll play one of the Army Group Centre games with a friend of mine. But nowadays, I play computer games. I don't need to search too hard to find an opponent.

I am 21 and have been playing civ since it was created (as the Romans most of the time!), so that means I started pretty young. My skills at the game have definately increased by a huge margin and my playing style has changed a lot. Either way, the game clearly has something to offer to everyone. It is just too diverse in possible strategies to ever go out of style!

I still have my first Tactics II game. One of the issues with early computer games was the smalll area that was displayed - hard to get the big picture. Part of hte success of CIV is because action is localized enough that you can maintain situational awareness without constant scrolling.

Since once you play civ from 10 to 31 yars. it makes 21 years? Civ only come out from 14 years ago at 1991.

I was 15 when I voted (voted in the 60-20 section). In a month I'm 18...

Don't have time to read threw the entire thread, I do have to work and it has taken me most of the day so far.

Anyway, I'm 28, been playing since Civ I (1992). Also have some problems with my wife but it is getting better, especially since I moved to computer into the lounge. "Honey, now it is just like I was sitting here watching TV with you", best is I don't have to watch any of the 'chich-flicks'. My son loves watching (he is 3), "Daddy, where are the boats?". I think next time I get a new computer, probably with Civ IV, I'll give him the old one and tech him to play. :)

It's great to see that I'm not one of the 'old-farts' like I usually am when it comes to game-forums.

[edit] Looks like I just revived a really old thread...maybe it will make it to three years this way.

I am 14. And I started with Vanilla Civ3. This was the first and only computer game I play seriously.
