Training game emphasizing trading - Emperor

@mistfit,

The mechanics are straightforward:

You need an open-ended peace treaty with the prospect.

Open the diplo screen and click on "Active Deals", then click on the Peace Treaty. The Secretary of State will have a fit but ignore the whine...

Then just add whatever items or terms you want: resources for cash or tech for gpt and when the Foreign Advisor says the terms are acceptable you're done.

It can only be done every twenty turns per prospect but can be a good way to get out of either a cash hole when you have excess resources or get a tech for gpt. I've also seen it used to squeeze a few more pennies out of a deal when the other side is being either stingy or greedy even when there is no reputation problem.

The down side is that you could end up at war so you need to pick your trade partner carefully

So lemme get this through my thick head:
1.) If I am stronger than my trading partner
2.) I have no peace treaty obligations with the civ. (ie 20 turns from a recent peace treaty)
3.) They have somthing I want

If the above are true I can get a better deal with them if I renegotiate peace in the deal than if I just tried to trade straight up. But it will effect their attitude with me and they may decide to declare war on me.

Do I have the jist of it?

So far so good.

The "better deal" may not be worth it. But if a busted trade rep (due to broken trade routes, for example) prevents you from getting cash in resource deals or making any gpt bids for technology offers then it works a treat.

You only risk war if for some reason you can't buy your way out of your threat if a deal won't work for whatever reason.

I have seen instances where threatening war against a weak partner will bring a tech cost down to "careful steal" rates, though. Theft on the installment plan if you will.

Thanks Brother Bede.

This is kind of a thread jack but I'm gonna do anyway.

I read somewhere that if you are selling a tech around to everyone and you get down to the civ's that have little or no cash to give you that you can gift them money and then turn around and sell them the tech for the money you just gave them and this will improve your standing (attitude) with them. Is this somthing that you do? Is it worth it?

@ Rik ~ have you seen the completed animation that raen and I did for you aver at the avatar help page? What do you tink?

This is true and is a good way to improve relations. I usually use it for if I'm going for a diplomatic win. If you sell a tech for 1 gold it doesn't improve relations more than for the trade. However if you give them enough for the tech and then get your money+their money then they are gracious and treat you a lot better.

if trikos' is still out of commision then skip me too. If he grabs it I may be able to play after him. I'm getting close to the end, but it's at least another 2 days before I'll have free time.

Roster check:
Trikos - up
Oopsy Poopsy - if schedule permits on deck or up if trikos doesn't claim in 24
Peacemonger -
dl123654
Bede
Plarq - skipped 'til further notice

That was the order in Bede's last game post on 2/1, we were waiting for Trikos 24 hours to post, he didn't, oopsy has asked for a skip/switch for this round.

That leaves:
Peacemonger (Last heard from 1/31)
Bede (Just played)
dl123654 (ME)
left to pick up the game.

Bede played the last turn and I before him.

Peacemonger is up then.

Ok, will play probably Sat afternoon if that works for everybody. (Partner in crime will be busy watching Duke play so I'll have a good window of time.)

Should we consider recruiting another trainee to add to the mix?

i agree about recruiting another trainee. i just couldn't foresee being so swamped at work. even without that we lost jurimax and trikos has been out of commish for awhile. the other option is if lurkers want to play or rik?
edit: also, kudos to bede dl and peacemonger for the consistency. i totally appreciate it. :D

Thanks but believe me, our time will come (or mine will, at least) and others will need to pick up the slack!

Sorry, Rik is not going to play. I'm not really a trainee, am I ?
Real reason: no time for this. I am involved in 3 PBEM's; 1 InterSite DemoGame and the setup of DemoGame 6. And planning 3 CIV-lan parties in the coming months. Besides that, moderating takes time as well. And I do have a life.

I have sent PM's to a couple of folks to recruit more players.

This is going to be one tough finish, boys and girls, so get ready for some serious Middle Ages warfare.

Whomp has agreed to come on board to replace the J-max. If everybody concurs I'd like Whomp to play after peacemonger.

Reporting for duty Sirs :salute:. This is good I am in a warring mood as Tim01 has turned into the "100 turn war"

I looked at the save and things look really good to me. Now observations and questions.
I've gone through much of the thread (in a cliff notes kind of way  )and I saw Bede's thoughts on the next millenium but I didn't see if we have an ultimate objective. We seem as if we are well on the way for domination.
So I can catch up a bit....
Regarding Al. I presume Argos is the 1st objective. I only see 1 iron, 1 horse and 1 far away salt. The iron and horse are nearby the LZ. The Greeks seem to be a tech and culture machine so I presume this is not a drag out war for fear of MT research and flips near Athens.
Is Argos to be razed?
Would our landing party be taking a right turn and heading to Pharsalos and cutting off the horses before MT?
Do we have a 2nd wave planned with war settlers and maybe explorers for some resource pillaging?
It would seem Chem (Izzie and Bill) would be the priority as far as a trade or .
Housekeeping. I see mapstat is being used. Is civassist ok?
Ok I better stop....
I'm excited to join and thanks Bede for asking. Now how about a "can of whomp butt" for Al our little lamb chop.

The objectives of the war with Greece (as I understand them):

1) Cripple Grecian economy, research and cultural growth through inter-island war.

2) Discount on Greek technology.

As for a campaign plan:

Holding any captured cities will be nigh on impossible. So capture, burn, disband any slaves, move the invasion force back onto the boats, wounded first. Sail the wounded back home to pick up replacements. Move the healthy on to the next closest town, rinse and repeat.

Destroy enough towns and Alex will give anything for peace or just keep on until we think we've had enough. Keep the losses to a minimum, attack with enough strength to win the battle, and move the wounded out of enemy territory and we can dish out a lot of punishment without being overly concerned with War Weariness.

As for a long term goal that has not been determined yet. With Greece close to "runaway" status (too much knowledge and powerful IA wonders), I think Conquest/Domination is the way to go.

Man, do I ever hate to do this. :bump:

Whomp - you're up
Oopsy Poopsy - on deck
dl123654
Bede
Peacemonger - skipped. 48 hours elapsed since got it

Plarq - skipped 'til further notice
Trikos - skip until heard from
