"A dangerous criminal illegal alien" - when your propaganda is so ridiculous that you need tautology to make it seem less lightweight than a wet tissue.

Florida building 'Alligator Alcatraz' migrant detention centre in Everglades

Florida has begun building a detention centre - dubbed the 'Alligator Alcatraz' - to temporarily hold migrants on an air strip in the Everglades.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the facility would be funded "in large part" by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's shelter and services programme, which was previously used to provide accommodation and other aid for undocumented migrants.

The plan has been criticised by several lawmakers, including the mayor of Miami-Dade County, who argued it could be environmentally "devastating".

The proposal comes as Trump tries to deliver on a campaign pledge to ramp up deportations of illegal migrants.

"Under President Trump's leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people's mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens," Noem said in a statement.

"We will expand facilities and bed space in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida."

The facility is to be built on the site of the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, a public airport around 58km (36 miles) from Miami. It will cost about $450m (£332m) a year to run.

In a video posted on X, Florida's Attorney General James Uthmeier called the airport a "virtually abandoned facility".

He said the detention centre could be built in 30 to 60 days and hold an estimated 1,000 people.

He argued the location acted as a natural deterrent for escapees.

Uthmeier said in the video: "[If] people, get out, there's not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide."

The mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniela Levine Cava, a Democrat, criticised the plan, saying "the impacts to the Everglades ecosystem could be devastating".

The Florida Everglades are a unique environmental region comprising marshes, prairies, forests, mangroves and estuaries. Uthmeier said the facility would not be located within Everglades National Park.

The whole chain of events are just so historic

"Criminal" these days seems to just mean "anyone I dislike". Presumption of innocence, due process, judgement of your peers... Clearly all part of the woke mind virus!

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, after all.

They don’t know what the %$&@ they’re doing.

Well said, Mr. President!

One suspects he speaks from a position of familiarity...

Are you sure?
Yes, he has been talking how he deserves it ever since Obama won it. Being impeached twice is not enough. He wants more awards. I'm hoping for a third impeachment in 2027.

In the absence of a better candidate, I think he at least deserves to have been nominated for helping Israel, Morocco, and the Emiratis for normalizing diplomatic relations.

They did give it to Obama to snub Bush. Obama got us into Libya and Syria, arguably well beyond the bounds of what was permitted by the UN Security Council re: the two countries and the War Powers Act.

Barack "drone'em" Obama, Abiy "what civilians?" Ahmed, Aung San "Rohingone" Suu Kyi, Yasser "Take them with us" Arafat, Henry Kissinger...
Trump would be in a good company.

Another Congressional agency effectively shuttered then? A country that ignores science is one doomed to fail.

Honestly feels hopeless, as liberals/centrists/Democrats offer nothing and constantly cede ground to the right wing freaks dragging this country into further fascism, both are equally complicit.

so zohran won the democratic primary in new york. he came from nothing, powered mostly by grassroots pure ground boots against the insane funding of cuomo. the question is whether we are seeing an upset in democrat structure. zohran uses powerful worker rhetoric, basic progressive inclusive language, and has a real presence of charisma. it's the kind of energy the democrats lack, a far cry from the weasly bureaucrat trust-the-process clowning that isn't getting votes anymore. i believe old democrats will do their best to put him in a chokehold instead of using that energy for, say, fighting trump.

Planned presentation to U.S. vaccine advisory panel cited a study that doesn't exist

Scientist listed as study's co-author says 'it's not making reference to a study I published or carried out'

A review on the use of the preservative thimerosal in vaccines slated to be presented on Thursday to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's outside vaccine committee cites a study that does not exist, according to the scientist listed as the study's author.

The report, titled "Thimerosal as a Vaccine Preservative" published on the CDC website Tuesday, is to be presented by Lyn Redwood, a former leader of the anti-vaccine group Children's Health Defense.

It makes reference to a study called "Low-level neonatal thimerosal exposure: Long-term consequences in the brain," published in the journal Neurotoxicology in 2008, and co-authored by University of California, Davis professor emeritus Robert Berman.

But according to Berman, "it's not making reference to a study I published or carried out."

Berman said he co-authored a similarly named study in a different journal — Toxicological Sciences — that came to different conclusions than those suggested by Redwood.

"We did not examine the effects of thimerosal in microglia," he said. "I do not endorse this misrepresentation of the research."

Slide removed from presentation

Reuters is the first to report on the inaccurate citation from Redwood's planned presentation. Later on Tuesday, the CDC uploaded a new version of Redwood's presentation, removing the slide citing the Berman study.

The meeting has become increasingly controversial after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. just weeks ago abruptly fired all previous 17 members of the expert panel and named eight new members, half of whom have advocated against vaccines.

Kennedy, a long-time anti-vaccine activist, founded Children's Health Defense.

The summary of the presentation suggested that there are enough thimerosal-free flu vaccines and that all pregnant women, infants and children should receive only those shots. It was not clear if the new advisory panel would be asked to vote on such a move.

Redwood's presentation was in contrast to a separate report posted on the CDC website Tuesday that says evidence does not support a link between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Kennedy has long pushed a link between vaccines and autism, which is contrary to scientific evidence.

Redwood could not be immediately reached for comment. A spokesperson for HHS said the study being referenced was the one in Toxicological Sciences, which Berman said was being misrepresented.

Senators push to postpone meeting

Both Republican U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Democratic U.S. Senator Patty Murray of Washington said the meeting, scheduled for June 25 and 26, should be postponed.

On Monday, Cassidy, who heads the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour and Pensions (HELP), called for the meeting to be delayed, saying it should not take place with a relatively small panel and without a CDC director in place.

Murray, a senior member and former chair of the HELP committee, has also called for the fired panel members to be reinstated or the meeting be delayed until new members are appropriately vetted.

Obama's Nobel Prize wasn't really earned by anything he'd done, it was clearly aspirational, based on what the global community hoped he'd accomplish, based on the positive, inspirational nature of his candidacy. Trump's candidacy/Presidency doesn't have the same positive, aspirational/inspirational quality or character that led to Obama getting that Nobel Prize

In any case, the fact that Obama didn't earn/shouldn't have received the Nobel Prize doesn't remotely justify giving Trump a Nobel Prize. "Two wrongs don't make a right", as the saying goes... Trump (and his supporters) whining that Obama didn't "deserve" his Nobel Prize doesn't make Trump "deserve" one. Bombing Iran and getting the US into another Middle East War certainly isn't great grounds for asking for a Nobel Peace Prize.
