Try1 - The Newbies!

You're up so go ahead and make the call! I can see advantages to both sides. Personally, I vote to go ahead and stop Cyrus from getting our copper mine by taking Susa, then go after Ragnar. On where to place our next city, I'd settle in place where we have two FP,several hills, and the cow for a nice production city. That was the original early dotmap by me in post #44 LK's Dotmap(or use the one Trynthlas had in #45 Try's Dotmap) But I also think that the guy in the hot seat should just make his best call and the rest of us will back your choice. (within reason of course...)

Aye, I can also see the benefits of taking both cities. Although if you do take Susa, I wouldn't raze it because it's in a pretty good position already.

personally i think we should take ragnar now we already have some troops at his border and im more afraid of him(had some bad experinces) then the persians. also we already have troops at ragnars border and can attack him sooner and easyer cause he doesnt have his uu yet

The other benefit for sticking with Ragnar as our first target is that I like his capital city. With the pigs, clams and cows(just out of the BFC) this city should be a terrific additionto our empire. And by attacking an enemy capital first there is a much lower chance that he will be able to take it back from us. I'm pretty sure that once we take Susa we can keep it, but it might take more effort for its defense. We'll have to spend some time to reinforce the garrison with spears and maybe even archers. We need to make sure we hold it until we can get Cyrus to the bargaining table and work out some kind of peace treaty.

Turn report:

I finally decided to prepare to attack Ragnar first.

Turn 100:

Lyons is founded. Since it will be a good production city, a Barracks is built first.

sg_1_0.jpg

Cyrus is completely blocked now, as long as we don't give him open borders.

Turn 101:

We are the "second largest" empire according to the historians.

Turn 105:

We meet another potential enemy to our north:

sg_1_1.jpg

Paris finished barrack, starts building Axemen.

Also Writing finishes. We are researching Hunting next, it will take 4 turns.

Turn 106:

Justitian wants open borders, we accept.

I see that a worker is sitting around doing nothing. If possible don't leave workers in fortified mode. They are hard to find for the next player, especially if a warrior is hiding it, like in our case.

Turn 107:

The oracle is finished!

sg_1_2.jpg

And we get Metal Casting for free.
Orleans will build an axe now.

Turn 109:

Hunting finished, Mathematics is next, mainly for the increased chop yield which could be benefitial for wonder building, especially in Paris.

Turn 110:

Our first City Raider Axeman is finished, moving towards Ragnar.

Turn 111:

Somone finished the Great Wall.

Turn 116:

Two more Axeman finished. We are ready to invade the viking empire.

Turn 118:

Pericles wants open borders, we agree.

Paris finishes another Axeman and now starts the Temple of Artemis which can be finished in 16 turns, not counting chopping.

Turn 119:

We meet:

sg_1_3.jpg

He seems to be northeast of us.

Also, a barbarian warrior shows up south of Lyons:

sg_1_4.jpg

Turn 120:

Ready to attack:

sg_1_5.jpg

I think it is worth to wait one more turn to allow one more axeman to join the stack and bring the stack size to 6.

Overview Map:

sg_1_6.jpg

So, it's up to the next player to start the rush. I would have thought that we could attack earlier. Maybe I should have done more chopping to get the axemen faster. Hope it's not too late.

Here's the save:

Greetings,

I don't think we'll be hurting because of the delay. If nothing else, the next person can have the stack sit on a forested hill (+75% defense) and wait for reinforcements.

Looks like a solid set, and a good report.

Roster:
Trynthlas
endymion
Darth Meanie
Rince - just played
Mitchifer - up
Carneios - on deck
LordKoros

For the next set, I would suggest we get one of the grass hills near Lyons mined to boost production. Also, bad bad bad Rince - don't farm floodplains!!! I suppose since we don't have pottery yet it isn't a big deal (though the worker could have been doing other things).

Mitch - 15 turns.

Nice report. Couple of things that I wanted to mention. If there are barbs roaming about, we need to keep producing military units. I would keep chopping that wonder to finish it and then get a few more soldiers (perhaps chariots for their speed). Also, lyons is going to need a monument to expand its border and give us access to the cows so after the barracks are finished and you get another axeman that is what I would start on. When the worker has chopped out the temple, we should start building the road to Ragnars Capital as well. I wish we could see what Ragnar has been up to inside his capital (I have my fingers crossed on fishing boats and not axemen.)

MM Lyons, it needs more production, put a mine on a hill, and Farms?? On Foodplains? Cottage up! As for war, two axeman could probably easily take Susa as well. Lets Roll up a nice pile of death to our enemies! Viva La franceis.

I need to skip my turn due to the fact that my uncle died last night but i may or may not be able to play the next turn of mine

Dumb question, but how do I post so I can show the larger pictures of my screenshots, and not just links to the screenshots themselves?

Or do I need a separate place to host the pictures?

Edit: Sorry to hear about your loss Carneios

I need to skip my turn due to the fact that my uncle died last night but i may or may not be able to play the next turn of mine

Sorry about your loss. Don't worry about skipping. Just tell us when you are ready to play.

About farming flood plains: What is so wrong about it? I find it really useful to get a city to grow fast. I know that cottages and flood plains are a nice combination, but in this case I find fast growth more important.

This will be the first part of my report, since I want some feedback on where to proceed...

...and what to do with our spoils of war! :D

Turns 1-3:

The first thing I did was adopt slavery. Since if things went poorly with the war effort, we can whip up some defenders in case of an emergency, or additional attackers if need-be.

And since I'm impatient, I go ahead and declare war and charge the field. Apparently I caught him by surprise because he only had two archers in his capital. He whipped a chariot right before I attacked, but by then it was too late:

Spoiler :

Somehow I managed to capture it without taking any loses! The first two axes had about a ~20% chance each time and were victorious both times.

Our warrior also took care of that upstart barbarian near Lyons the turn before Nidaros fell.

Spoiler :

Turns 4-5:

While I was taking Nidaros, Ragnar had an archer that was busy exploring Cyrus' territory start to march his way towards Paris. Seeing him coming, I had Paris temporarily stop building the Temple of Artemis and start working on a chariot. I also had Orleans work on a chariot as well, and I moved the warrior that was near Orleans towards Paris to engage the enemy.

Even though he was attacking across water, the archer took out the warrior, so I guess what goes around comes around as far as luck is concerned. I whipped the chariot in Paris just in case the computer attacked and defeated our warrior in some 1 in a million shot. And it paid off:

Spoiler :

While this is going on, the rest of the axemen march towards Uppsala. It was defended by 2 archers and a warrior. Apparently Ragnar was having some problem with barbarians, because his warrior was already weakened, and a barb archer kamikazes himself against the city right before I attacked, further weakening the defenders. Hurray for barbs :p .

Soon Uppsala suffers the same fate as Nidaros, but I lose 2 axemen during the fighting. However, we captured the 2 workers that were holed up in Uppsala, so that helps make up for it.

Spoiler :

I go ahead and keep it since it has pretty good resources (Cow and Wineries), which can be put to go use later.

Since for some reason none of the clams had fishing boats already, I made this trade with Cyrus rather than researching it ourselves:

Spoiler :

Besides that, the rest of the empire remains mostly the same. I chopped another forest for the Temple, and I changed Lyons workorder to a monument to get the culture increase so we can get cows in the cultural border. I'm also having one of the captured workers build a road to connect Nidaros with the rest of our empire.

Any suggestions on where to proceed next? The remainder of my turns will probably be rather quiet, but I suggest we see about building our next city in the plot of land in between Paris and Nidaros. Also, after I consolidate our newly-gained territory, I'll probably move a portion of the axemen back towards Paris to plan for the next attack against Susa if that is still one of our goals.

Way to go Mitch!!! :goodjob: and that was only 5 turns?
You are:king:

I guess we should take susa, then worry about exploration and expansion.
Way to go though :)

Congrats to Mitchifer! Well done - it would have been a tough break to take Ragnar's capital only to have our own fall to a single archer sniper. I assume, since you want to bring back soldiers from the Viking front, that Ragnar has been completely defeated. If so, start Nidaros on those clamboats and get a monument going in the other city. Leave a decent garrison to protect them from further barb attacks (maybe scout alittle to the east).

I do think we should at least start planning to take on Susa sooner than later. And before we go planning to settle the next city we need to watch our treasury. How big a deficit are we running with these two new cities? I know you got a windfall from sacking his towns but my experience says we'll blow through that very quickly.

Again - great job.

Thanks :) . Although the real credit goes to those who went before me and gave me the awesome setup.

Like I mentioned earlier, the rest of my turns were spent consolidating our newly gained territory. So below I'll go over the notable events that occurred:

There sure are a lot of barbarians on this map :p. Uppsala and Lyons were under threat several times during my turns, along with Nidaros and Orleans who had barbs pop up once as well:

Spoiler :

I also upgraded the warrior in Lyons to a spearman when unfortunately I didn't move my chariot quick enough to engage another barb. I figure it will help out later if we have to face Cryus' immortals...they'll put their name to the test:

Spoiler :

Pacal offers us open borders. I figured it wouldn't hurt us for now. Around the same time I whipped the completion of the monuments in Lyons and Nidaros to expand the borders quicker. I find it better to whip at lower populations so the cities regrow back quicker without too much fuss.

Spoiler :

The Temple of Artemis is finished in Paris, and Paris begins working on a forge. Also working on a forge in Orleans after the completion of a granary. We also finished mathematics, and we're now working on iron working for swords. Although it's not far in if we want to switch it to construction for catapults.

Anyway, I hope I left the next person in a good position. The first group of axemen just arrived in Paris near the end of my turns, ready to be regrouped for the next offensive.

Way to go! We should use some whip application, take Susa, and make Nidaros a GP farm. Some careful micromanagement should be at hand for the future. We should also buy some techs off of the other nation like Alphabet. Better we buy techs from the AI than the AI from the AI.
