Tryn's Monarch Game #3

Well, I was looking for a game to play so thought I'd start this one. My original aim was to REX, and perhaps use Cho-ko-nu to grow bigger. I normally play on Emperor. [This isn't the way it played out at all...]

Settle in place, begin worker, tech BW. two huts visible, so that's going to be a difference between games right off the bat.

First hut: gold

Met Stalin turn 4, to teh East, so prioritised exploration that way. Wow he is REALLY close. I camp my warrior next to a FP to await the worker-steal.

TUrn 12 meet Shaka from the South

Turn 15 complete BW, can't see bronze, but I hvaen't explored much. This feels like a military-based start, so I head for Animal Husbandry next to see if there's horsies nearby, then Wheel.

Turn 23 Beijing size 4, begins settler.

Turn 25 meet Toku from behind Stalin.

Turn 26 see Justinian's borders to the West. Whip settler. mm to complete AH next turn.

Find horsies nice and close. Begin barracks and tech wheel.

second city will go to the south east 1E of the fish. This captures fish, cows, silk, 3 hills and is riverside and coastal.

Turn 30 at size 3 Beijing switches from barracks to worker-worker, using a forrest chop.

31 stalin adopts slavery. Next techs are Fishing then HBR then Archery.

38 horses connects. Begin madly chopping/whipping chariots.

45 discover gems on an already-mined plains hill next to Beijing!

53. horse archers available. Next techs are pottery/writing/alpha. I take 6 chariots to Stalin's doorstep.

57 declare on Stalin. Take Moscow with a loss of 3 chariots. Spam cottages around Moscow. Find Copper that was in Stalin's borders (but isn't anymore).

67 get unlucky attacking St Petersburg. Lose 3 chariots and a HA. Leave a single archer at 0.3 health, but retreat the single remaining HA to await HA reinforcement.

71 complete Alpha, next up is maths-currency-COL

73 Raze st petersburg (I can fit two better cities in here). Next up: Toku. By now I've built a pile of improvements and my workers are generally building roads.

81 I have 8 HAs on Tokus border when I declare. Raze the first city I take.

88 capture and keep Tokyo. Lose 2 HAs.

91 Roosy declares on me. OK then... you were next anyway. Pop GS to build academy in Moscow.

96 take a cease fire with Roosy. I've taken one of his cities but I need time to re-position and to get some archers over there.

99 Complete COL. Need happiness, so Monarchy is next.

I stopped here. May play on, but the game is won. The HAs will take out Roosy, and then we can spam cities onto half the continent.
 
That was a fun game! Was that really random AI leaders? Was just about as bad as it gets from a Diplo perspective (would replace Roosy with Cathy to make it worse). Worst enemies flying everywhere even before any diplo options opened up. The only saving grace was that Justinian trades techs at cautious...

I liked the start save, on a plains hill with 2 corn and gold. Lots of options for how to play this map. worker-worker was probably the right start.

As soon as I saw Stalin I knew that the rush was on. I didn't see his copper till I'd taken Moscow, but with chariots it wouldn't have made much difference. After that things just sort of took a life of their own...

When you saw horses in the inner ring after teching AH you should begin to feel the bloodlust!

Your initial dot map had two of the same cities that I built (SE of capital next to the fish and SW of capital between pig and horses).

I would question Hunting -Archery-Fishing after Wheel. Pottery first would be better if you aren't going the military route, particularly with cheap granaries available. Also, you can usually trade for IW rather than teching it, if you get Alpha first.
