TSG8 After Action Report

Okay, done and done. Turn 308 for me. I could have won this game with diplo or culture as well although I would have probably had to take out Ramesses for the latter as he had 20 SP to my 16 (I think). I had all 16 CS's allied on my last turn. I had about 6 for most of the game and then added more towards the end. Interestingly, I never went to the bottom of the board for my SP's. Did 3 Liberty, 4 Tradition, 4 Patronage, and all of Piety (again, I think--if that's not exact, it's close). I would have thought Rationalism would be a no-brainer in a tech game but I just never got to it. There was always something I felt I needed more. That thinking probably cost me a couple dozen turns as I held off on the Piety tree thinking I was going to go with Rationalism so by the time I said "screw it" and went with Piety I spent 40-50 turns struggling with happiness until I could get the big bonus in Piety (I forget the name--3rd one down on the left, counting the open as one that is).

So, I settled in place and built scout>monument>wkr>GL. SP I started with Trad>Aristocracy>Liberty>Coll Rule>Citizenship>Legalism. I built the GL on turn 56 and popped IW. I went Pott>Writing>AH>Mining>BW>Calendar>Archery before the GL hit. I didn't meet anyone from the other continent until turn 175. As soon as I got a couple more trading partners I took out Darius. Caesar then DoW'd me and I immediately took Rome and then took my time with the rest because of my happiness issues as previously mentioned.

Suleiman was beating up on the other continent so I denounced him which (I think) allowed me to stay friendly with Askia for most of the game. Everyone else stayed guarded until I started taking Suli's CS's at which point he went hostile. By that time however, the writing was on the wall. I annexed the Persian cap and Rome as well and turned them into powerhouse production cities so when I started popping my saved up GS for the late techs I was able to build the last 5 spaceship parts all at once. The longest took about 9 turns.

A few sidenotes:

I wasted probably 5-7 turns at the end cuz I timed one of my RA's wrong and it popped a tech on the bottom of the tree so I had to research the last spaceship tech myself.

Ramesses built the Kremlin and Suli built the Louvre and the turn I popped a GE to get them. First time that's happened to me. Kinda sucked. The Louvre especially as those artists were going to be another 18 turns of GA for me.

Last, I took a screenshot of the Global Politics screen when I was done and it showed Ramesses having 5 SP's done in both Rationalism and Piety. We obviously can't do both lines. They can I take it? Or is we completely finished the Piety tree could we then go to Rationalism?

Overall, lots of fun. Thanks a lot for putting it together. It's fun to be able to talk (and read) about the same game other people are playing.

I think you may want to consider bumping it up to immortal at some point. It's getting harder and harder to lose...

PS. I have that screen shot in SteamCloud if you want to see it. Not quite sure what I'm doing there but let me know...

Seems like a magnetic victory date!!! Originally I was going to get the Glib but
decided at the time that I didn't have enough production to make it worthwhile. So
I started Stonehenge after I reasearched Calendar but not thinking about the
difficulty level and sure enough an AI got it. At that point it was get NC up ASAP. I
settled one extra city to the south with the free SP settler. Then it took forever
for it to dawn on me that I needed to go to sea to do meet and greets for RAs. With
a little more forsight I would have beelined the top of the tree to get caravels out.
There was one curiosity but I couldn't figure out how to do screen shots to show it.
Rome built a frigate in a completely landlocked city :crazyeye:! Not even a river or
lake near by. And at some time after they upgraded to a destroyer! It even took
shots at me during our war. Swimming pool? duck pond? large puddle from a heavy
rain? Somehow they managed to do it.

. The Louvre especially as those artists were going to be another 18 turns of GA for me.

Yeah this wonder is more powerful than the Taj Mahal if you compare the lengh of the golden age given. I also built it.

Did you see my comment about Egypt running both Piety and Rationalism? Have you ever seen that before?

Yay, finally i get to win one of these games :)

Now i need to do a report and dont know anymore what i did exactly^^

Spoiler :
Basically i built 2 more cities as i always do, building some libraries that i usually dont do, and puppeting a roman city as the chance arose (they were at war with darius).

Darius didn't like my meddling apparently, and declared war after i concuered the city, so i just went ahead, to rather destroy HIM than the romans, who had already lost their capital. i took rome for myself quite fast, went on to persepolis, and then got my army pretty much destroyed trying to get Pasargadae in the mountains.

Made peace with Darius and went back to my scientific goals, getting the friendships of some city states alongside.

After quite a bit of peaceful time, Persia Russia and the Ottomans decided i was a nuisance and all declared war against me. Since i am a total newb i didnt have any defensive pacts at the time, although i could have had them easily.

There wasnt much of an attack incoming, but especially russia had a lot of city states allied that i could not get on my side then. They also conquered two of my allied cs.

On my own continent it took quite a while to break Persia, but i managed.

I made peace with the other two for a while, shipping my army over, then getting back at russia and liberating my city states. It went perfectly since everyone ganged up on russia at that point. I got a pretty big chunk of the other continent then, annexing 2 cities, one here and one back home.

Then i just built my spaceship and noone dared to interfere :P

Won science victory turn 371 with a core of 2558

You're correct, there are no rankings for Civ5.

It is all explained here. Until there is a security mod in place to ensure the integrity of the competition and some other infrastructure available, we are running the training game series.

We'll post a table showing who did what at the end of the game. That's no different from the real GOTM competitions, where posting results during the competition would provide spoiler information.

Meanwhile, players are posting their results in this thread. You can compare your result with theirs now if you want to.

My first GOTM I guess.
Spoiler :
I used my usual early-game strategy: GS->CS, (skipped SH), NC, 2nd city, Oracle etc. etc. The rest of the game was self-conducting. After Rome and Persia, I had to puppet Egypt since they stole many important wonders. All conquests are with 4x(Long)sword army.
In general it was a good game and I enjoyed it. Almost perfect (made no critical mistakes and reached all planned goals).
Speaking of patch changes - I can't say I saw any significant changes in the gameplay. Just some minor makeup - some changes are better (a little - like the reworked GS slots), some are not so good (a bit, e.g. the new Tradition tree stalls my usual policy adopting flow). The big picture is pretty much the same (for a fast Sci, Dip or Cul victory at least :P).
P.P.S. I put a replay here: http://civ5.flexd.net/replay/4d79eefeb878bc3ed7000060 in case anyone is interested

P.S.
Did you see my comment about Egypt running both Piety and Rationalism? Have you ever seen that before?
Yes, it is OK. You can switch between two at any time (incl. after either one is finished - you lose bonuses but it still counts as "adopted/finished"). I myself had both completed in one of my cultural (HOFM) games once.

On the patch:

Theyre freaking settling EVERYWHERE.

Had to raze a lot of places multiple times...

Far from a well-planned game and eventually lost to Catherine's UN.

She somehow managed to 'steal' one of my allied city-states giving her the ONE damn vote she needed . Happened a couple of times in the game, can you basically bribe a CS now even if they're already allied? or has it always been like that and I've just never noticed?

Annoying cos was just about to start the final spaceship part.

Detailed report attached - or not, attachmentnts still not working?

Lessons learnt:
- Fannied around at the start with the cities vs NC debate and ended up not doing either properly.
- Don't found cities when you've nearly completed Oxford.
- Going to have to read up on changes to allied CS as that really screwed me up several times.

I skipped CIV IV completely, so there has been some time me not playing any CIV (which is good I guess?). This version V is a bit different than version III which I played a lot. I was previously playing only at level 5, therefore the level 6 was a bit challenge for me. And the biggest problem was Russia... with her nukes, but at the end she was conquered.

Spoiler :
Is it better to search for research labs before apollo program? When it's the best time to build Apollo? I beelined Apollo because i didnt know what to really do. I built Apollo too fast i think, making AIs hating me more. In fact i made a lot of blind decisions!

Settled in place, built 2 additional cities, NC start, then steamrolled Rome with 4 melee and 2 catapults, upgraded to Longswords, and did the same to Darius. Ended up building 1 more city in the middle of the landmass as there was a huge gap on the river to fill.

Normally, I would consolidate my holdings, then move on to the next continent and start puppeting them also. But since this was supposed to be a Space Race, I sat back and built wonders, which I almost never do.

It was probably a mistake, Cathy was running away with the other landmass, and knocked off a couple more AI's. I think only Cathy, Songhai, and the Arabs were left at the end. I kept hoping she would come on over for some fun, and give me a reason to change plans, but she never did, just made a lot of faces at me.

Made some mistakes as I don't normally tune for a space victory, so I could have probably done this faster but oh well.

I took some screens and stuff, but apparently you can only upload via the special save link.

Anyway, thanks for the game, save uploaded, and looking forward to the next round.

Skippable opinion follows:
Spoiler :

Not having quick combat on is painful. Especially in a CS puppet game. Having to watch every city do this or that to a barb or Cathy was extremely annoying.

I feel Greece/Siam are kinda easy/cheater civs to play. Their UA's are too strong IMO without reducing the number of CS's.

Launched my spacecraft on turn 327 ( 1907 )

Catherine was a monster on the other island...was proxy warring with her for centuries. I had city state allies on her turf and she kept stealing them from me on my continent forcing me to frantically invade them. She was close to Diplo so it was pretty hairy for most of the end game. Arabs had nukes and a massive army I was worried they were going to attack but he didn't end up making a move.

Fun game! The patch has made city management and building a lot more interesting and fun.

3cities ->NC -> 4th city (+ 2 capital puppets + 1 regular city puppet)

tradition, Legallism, Landed Elite, Patronage (x3), Rationalism + Freedom (x alot), Order (x1)

AH, Mining, Calendar, Writing, BW, IW, MC, Steel, (6 longswords) peaceful afterwards

I grabbed Persepolis (the only city it had) and Rome + 1more from Augustus. Nobody bothered me afterwards.

As many RA with oversees guys I could manage.

Allied with all maritima and cultural city states.

I think to improve the finish time, I should have try to shoot for early wonders, such as GL.
Possibly to have only 3-4 cities and be very peaceful and do RA with my neighbours as well with overseas guys.

*Wall'o'text approaching, you have been warned*

I enjoyed this game very much and also thought it was one of the best I've played (my first emperor win too :D)

I decided I didn't want too many cites, but wanted massive ones so I went down the tradition track. By the end of my demographic on population was 35,701,000 while the world average was ~17,000,000. Athens finished with a population of 29 and sparta not far behind at 27.

Early on I waited until getting the NC before settling my next cities. I was also able to get the Great Library. While preparing hopolites to assault Rome Persia asked me declare war with them. I took and puppeted the Roman city of Antitum (settled north of rome) while Persia captured Rome. Rome was eliminated and peace remaned on our continent for many turns as I build up infastructure. One very important construction during this time was completing the Porcelein tower in sparta. Now I had two cities getting GS at a fair rate.

Once I discovered rifling I upgraded all my musketmen and attack Persia, taking Rome and a persia city south of it. I sued for peace and got some nice GPT as well as 3 mroe puppets (one a razed... I thought it was a different city but the actual city turned out to be worthless.)

With the money from persia and income boost from 4 new puppets my science began to get a huge boost. This was also thanks to the rationalism tree and the Partronage policy allowing CS to contribute science.

Eventually another war broke out with persia and I took their capital, leaving them with just three cities. The ottomans declared war on me once I started building spaceship parts, and even nuked Persepolis! (which I am actually angry about becaues the game gave NO notification of this. I had no idea it had happened until I had noticed the fallout 2 turns later:rolleyes: is my city being nuked not pop up worthy?) But by this point it was too late to stop me anyway, but to punish them I puppetted the two cities they had settled on my continent.

By the time I won ( and many turns before ) I was generating 1638 :c5science: each turn. About 350 or 400 was from CS allies, and Athens was producing 304.5. I dont have exact numbers but sparta wasn't far behind, probably around 270.

So if I learned one thing from this game, it is that I now love the tradition branch :) I look foward to participating in many more GOTM.

Got a little nervous near the end when everyone on the other continent DOW'd me

For "kicks" I allied with all the Military CS's on the other continent just to give the warmongering civ's something to distract them.

Russia was HUGE, running around with Tanks and Mech Infantry. Waited in fear for an invasion, but it never happened.

I had a real problem with Happiness ... I was -14 for a long time.... just couldn't get the Civs to trade with me

Thanks again GOTM staff for the effort to make the game possible !
