Current roster (I think):
tupaclives
Andronicus - just played
Merlin - UP
CommandoBob - on deck

Looks like Andronicus got to have all the fun, beating up on Germany like that.

I will need to take some time to study those turns. My attempt at warfare in a solo game did not do so well, I think because I attacked too soon and without enough force.

Great stuff Andronicus! 'tis a great day in Aztec history now that our whole continent (with the exception of a few worthless french cities) now belongs to us!

Haven't checked the save but agree with merging native workers into cities in our new 1st ring to help their growth, particularly Iron Knob. The sooner it gets Iron Works + Factory (+ hydro plant from hoovers) the better.
Might be wrong about the shield increas from Iron Works but I believe its 100% so that would be a 175% shield increase in that city (Iron Works +100%, factory +50% + hydro plant 25% (increase factory by 50%) = 175% or am I totally off :crazyeye:)

When fully developed it should be at easily 100spt+ and will be extremely useful come spaceship time, could even consider giving it a nuclear power plant when we get that far (+100% factory production for a whopping +200% for that city!)

Merlin said:
Did we get many slaves? We could put native workers into cities like Iron Knob, to get them bigger faster.

We got a few but not as many as we might have if I had razed cities first up
Generally I elected to keep cities for a round or 2 to allow deeper access of troops at next German city. With Saltzburg and Heidelburg I tried suppressing resistors with cheap outdated units, then rushing settlers - worked for Heidelburg netting 2 settlers, got 1 from Saltzburg curtisy of forest chops, but then sufferred a flip - fortunately it was well cut off from main German cities and easily razed

I have merged a number of German slaves to cities, certainly more could be done - I suggest prioritising the 1st ring cities aroun Berlin as these will mostly be powerhouses (inclues IW city).
We have 15 cities with less than 10% corruption, I have a screenie of this I'll add once I get home tonight
One point of caution - dont merge French workers, we have a couple - they would put us at risk of flip to French and would increase WW if (when) we look to clear Joan off OUR continent later

You're right it was very much a fun set - sorry for hogging all the action :mischief:

edit -just checked back through the thread to see where we got out of kilter with turn numbers - it seems I played the extra 5 turns you missed out on previously Bob

I do not pretend to be a top war mongerer, but FWIW my philosophy in the war was to make the battles as one sided as possible. Artilery was the key here - bombarding even infantry to 1hp gave cavs good chance of success.
I started with a good number of cavs so I would always have healthy cavs avail, injured ones sent to rax city to heal up quickly. Towards the end (before I started building a few more) I got low in numbers and had to abort an attack (on Cologne)
Where possible I tried to press on as fast as possible to restrict Germany's ability to build more units, looking at ways of quickly getting my stack of arty in place such as with settling Woolongong, and keeping captured cities at least a turn helped.
Rushing full health infantry with cavs is a recipe for high attrition (although Germany killed I think 2 full health infantry with successive cav attacks). I did use this technique against rifles at New Berlin pre infantry.
Of course Germany's strategy of sending all their cav force into our territory in the first turn of the war was a :smoke: move.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/State_of_cities_1350AD.JPG

Here is information re our current cities
Note 15 cities have less than 10% corruption
Some of our former powerful cities require corruption modifiers to be useful, but the biggest boost to our research power will come once our new RCP5 cities are grown to size 12 with lib and uni

7 new RCP5 cities are:
Gem city - size 8 - can grow bigger if Cairnes builds harbour and uses sea tile instead of wheat, giving wheat to Gem City, Gem City can then use extra mountain -> size 10, will then make 22 spt, double with factory (and hydro) -requires lib and uni (3 gem mountains = lots of commerce)
Ballarat - size 7 +2fpt - can work mined plains, irr plains (being railed), lake and 2 coast (no harbour) -> size 11 - building market, also needs lib + uni
Newcastle - size 9 +2fpt - can work 2 mGrass and gem mountain -> size 12 (leaving 2 mGrass for Kalgoorlie), uni completes soon
Kalgoorlie - size 2 +4fpt - has plenty of options - at size 12 will work only mined tiles with 2f surplus, needs lib and uni, nearing completion market
Iron Knob - size 2 +6fpt - a future powerhouse with factory and IW. Have rushed temple so can access coal mountain - switching (and rushing) to lib is an option. No infrastructure yet. This is a city which will benefit from growing beyond size 12 - it needs both duct and hospital
Mt Isa - size 3 +8fpt - a future science powerhouse with lots of river tiles and room to grow large - lib rushed, will build this turn
Launceston - size 2 +4fpt - will b strong producer and researcher in future, again lib just rushed

As you can see they have a way to go
My approach is to max growth until size 9 or 10 then mine to optimise production at max tile usage and add workers once terrain improved. Need some workers avail after for pollution clean jobs. Until production picks up its probably worth rushing / short rushing infra in these cities

edit of course the other top priority city is Berlin - already size 12 +4fpt with market and lib, soon to have factory - needs uni and hospital to be real science power

Future city placement (to keep out AI) - see dot map

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/1350AD_dotmap1.JPG

My priorities would be
1) red dot as furs will attract AI
2) pink dot
3) purple dot
4) orange dot
5) black dot
the latter 2 are optional as border expansion should close off these areas, certainly black dot requires AI traipsing over our land so we should be able to avoid that one
edit - one extra consideration, black dot (RCP9) increases rank of all 4 towns south of Canberra increasing their corruption, whilst others only increase TAK and Tarzana

Flip risks - I wrote these down but have misplaced them - basically those towns in our SE with French cultural overlap have about 0.2 - 0.4% chance of flipping and that should decrease after temples culturally expand

Pre-flight check: We have tons of cash! I hurry some builds. Change some to settlers to get new cities asap. We are looking very good!

IBT: Our ivory deal with France ends, I don't renew it straight away.

Turn 1 (1355AD): Iron Knob: temple->duct, Woolongong: temple->duct, Perth: settler->ironclad, Cairns: Harbour->ironclad, Rubyvale: Army->Army, Mt. Isa: lib->market, Launceston: Lib->market, New Leipzig: settler->temple, Dubbo: temple->court. Now that Cairns finished harbour, switch citizen from wheat to sea. Gem city gets the wheat for growth and I also rush lib, because there's massive beakers in Gem City. Found Port Douglas to pink dot and Furs City to red dot. Both start temple for cheap border expansion. Hurry settler in Stuttgart.

IBT: zzzz

Turn 2 (1360AD): Berlin: factory->uni, Newcastle: uni->factory, Stuttgart: settler->settler, Gem City: lib->uni. Found Nimbin not quite on the purple dot, but one SE so that it gets both whales after expansion. Hurry temples in some new cities.

IBT: We get pollution near Canberra.

Turn 3 (1365AD): Canberra: hospital->police station, Port Douglas: temple->court, Furs City: temple->court, Melbourne: lib->uni, Cologne: worker->court, Oz Oil: temple->court, Cairns: ironclad->ironclad, Bendigo: court->temple, New Leipzig: temple->settler, New Hamburg: worker->court.

IBT: France and Egypt sign peace. We get the Iron Works message.

Turn 4 (1370AD): Byron Bay: lib->uni, Kalgoorlie: market->duct. Our dyes and incense deal with Egypt ends. Sell Radio to Egypt for dyes, incense, wm and 9gold. India has Combustion, one turn before we get it. Science to 10% and we still get it next turn. Hurry two last settlers.

IBT: zzzz

Turn 5 (1375AD): Combustion->Mass Production. Perth: ironclad->destroyer, Adelaide: uni->transport, Stuttgart: settler->court, Cairns: ironclad->destroyer, Townsville: uni->cath, New Leipzig: settler->court, Gem City: uni->factory. We lose wines and big gpt from India. And because they got Combustion last turn, we can't sell it to them. Trade France Steel for ivory, wm and 13gold.

IBT: Gems to Greece ends, Alex can't pay so I cancel it.

Turn 6 (1380AD): Berlin: uni->hospital, Ballarat: market->lib, Nimbin: temple->court, Broome: hospital->cath. Found Elliott on black dot->court.

IBT: zzzz

Turn 7 (1385D): Townsville: cath->infantry, Rockhampton: Police Station->cath. Build Willi Gulli on the orange dot->court.

IBT: Frenc send a cav and infantry to our lands. What are they up to??

Turn 8 (1390AD): Canberra: Police Station->inf, Cairns: destroyer->destroyer, Ruby: Army->Army. I don't want a war with France yet as they are paying a lot of gpt, so I block their troops.

IBT: French turn back.

Turn 9 (1395AD): Berlin: hospital->cath.

IBT: zzzz

Turn 10 (1400AD): Perth: Destroyer->Destroyer, Townsville: inf->transport. Hurry duct in Iron Knob as it will grow to size 7 next turn. We get Mass Production next turn and I can turn down science to 10%.

Very quiet turns. Mostly building. I couldn't join many workers, because there is still lots of land to improve and pollution was causing harm. I started to build our navy in case we must slow India down. They are still in democracy and researching fast.

Looking good - I'm thinking we probably have enough settlers as unlike conquests we cant set up productive science farma in vanilla.
Dont have the game infront of me as at work, but I query why settler in Perth which was (I think) a productive city stabalised at size 12?
I would favour any settlers / workers being pulled from corrupt towns esp the ones near France.

Should we be planning UN pre-build soon? - To deny AI of course.

Good stuff Merlin, that was a quick turnaround! Thats what I like to see, so that makes

Yes, this was a tough call. I just thought that Perth will soon grow back to size 12. There was basically two old German towns near French border and I took 4 settlers from those cities, but I wanted our new cities up and running asap so I took one settler from another city too in the first turn.

BTW, there were lot of cities on wealth. I kept many of them on wealth, but I don't really like to "build" wealth at this point of the game. I think that we need to hurt India a bit. Putting lot of infantry and artillery on a mountain near some important city and razing a couple. They are a democracy and research way too fast for my liking. We could put cities back to building infantry and soon tanks for this job. We have an empty army and new one coming, so we could make infantry armies to help war in India.

Merlin said:

Yep, I didnt see need for more military till tanks and these cities had built their infrastructure, so I didnt know what else to build ... I did write " -> wealth? " in my log

Haven't had time to really examine the save; looked at it through MapStat and CivAssist.

We need to do something about India. Like us, Gandhi has a whole lot of land to himself and has used it somewhat wisely.

The highlights of India from MapStat:
Tiles: 451
% of tiles: 23.0%
Cities: 23
Culture: 42753 (+393 per turn)

Our highlights from MapStat:
Tiles: 568
% of tiles: 29.0%
Cities: 39
Culture: 11016 (+258 per turn)

India's culture worries me. In round numbers, India has 43K culture points and is cranking along at 400 cpt. India needs 57K for a culture win, which at the current rate of growth is 142 turns in the future. India's closest culture rivals are Egypt and France, both with 29K points.

I think we need to pay attention to India and severly restrict India's culture growth in order to prevent India from sneaking a Culture Victory on us while we are building space ship parts.

I see we have two destroyers (location unknown) and a third about to be completed this turn. We also have a handful of transports, with more being built.

If we built privateers (are they in Vanilla?) we could make a wolf pack of privateers to bombard India's coastal cities and perhaps destroy some cultural icon in the city. Privateer actions do not start wars. But need team input before I built any, since I am not sure how well this fits in with our plans.

Other than just taking pot-shots at India, looks like this turnset will be one of building. Don't really want war with France, but would love to have France and India at war.

Don't plan to declare on anybody; just plan to make ready for war and more science.

  • longbowman - 1
  • knights - 7
  • cavalry - 20
  • infantry - 26, 3 in production
  • tank - 3, 6 in production
  • artillery - 32
  • ironclad - 3
  • transport - 6, 2 in production
  • destroyer - 8, 2 in production
  • army - 6, 1 in production

And the >>SAVE<< is here.

About as dull as I expected, which meant I got to build toys for some one else to use. (And when you are playing a bit above yourself, dull is good!) :D

Military
We have tanks. Only three right now, but six are in the pipeline. We have over twenty infantry; have three more in the making. Need tanks to attack and infantry to defend.

We need a fleet to defend our transports when we move across the sea. We have eight destroyers and six transports, with two more of each being built.

All of our transports are in Tarzana, closest city to India. I have our most recent infantry and tanks fortified on the grasslands SE of Canberra, just so they are easier for us to see.

Trading
We made only one big trade and that was when Mass Production was sold to India for over a thousand gold and 167 gpt on turn 2. We had a chance to make a buck, so to speak, and took it, knowing that we could not make an overt move against India for twenty turns. However, trade or no trade, it was going to take twenty turns before we could do something. So I do not think we lost any turns by making the trade.

Currently, India, Greece and France know about Flight. We will know about Flight in two turns. We know about Motorized Transport (tanks) and they do not. I did not want to sell a military advantage. But if we cannot stop them from learning it…

India has a rather large navy heading to France. Three transports, 2 galleons, three or four ironclads and two destroyers. We have some units in place to shadow.

Economy
We are currently running at -26 gpt, which we should be able to reduce once we are one turn away from learning to fly.

I did not rush any builds; just let the treasury grow. Not real sure about the wisdom of Nhullunbuy making a barracks, due this turn, nor about TAK building a cathedral. TAK will take a while to build anything (so why not a cheap cathedral ?) and Nhullunbuy can build veteran tanks quickly.

On turn 10 remembered I had wanted to make some settlers to go with our invasion force, but too late at that point.

At work so no chance to look at he save
Looks like you did good, I agree with waiting on war with India, particuarly if they are at war with France (are they, and everyone else, still at war with Egypt and has there been any decline in Egypt's power because of it?)
I note you sold motorised transport to Greece for 284g - it might be all they had, but it is an expensive tech and unlikely they could have afforded buying it from India.
I think we have enough infantry at present and should press on with tanks where cities with rax are building military and bombers for those cities without rax (consider for TAK and Nhullunbuy). I dont think we need more rax cities

Sounds like a good turnset, agree with Andronicus on the subject of selling Mass Production to Greece though.

Consider this a got it, I'll either play 2nite or 2moro morning.

I'd start a war with India. Bob didn't tell if he loaded any troops to the empty armies. We could make one infantry army and then tank armies. New artillery would also be nice. In India we are attacking >12 size cities with multiple infantry defending.

With over 7000 in the bank, I'd rush the builds in the new core around Berlin to get those cities up to speed asap. We could get Egypt and Greece to war against India also. This way they'd lose luxuries and they'd have to change to communism sooner. We don't really have trouble maintaining democracy during the 20 turns of war. Happiness looks good.

Only point about not having the war soon, is the big gpt deal with India. I would not have done that deal. We might also need some fighters in the coast near India, if their bombers reach us.

The armies are empty.

Why not? (I am curious, not spiteful.)

On selling Mass Production to Greece, I never considered that Greece could not buy it from India; my bad.
