Turn Discussion: Turns 1-19

Crap, we're in last place :p. Well the turn is played and I'm writing the update.

Check back in a little while in the (TOP SECRET) thread and I'll have the new tech acquisitions analyzed.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there are no horses, copper, or iron on our (or any of our opponents) starting island. I'm thinking the map maker wants us to get to the next island for those.

I would not be so sure - we have 2 unforested hills which often indicate metals (or coal/uranium).

You are not going out on a limb :goodjob: I also think this is likely and I said so a while back in another thread. But then again, I also said way back (on turn 0 IIRC) that we were probably on an island...
Spoiler :
Looking at our start location and trying to figure out what kind of map layout we have, I notice:

1. We are on the north end of the map (snow covered pines in our NW)
2. We have an ocean/large sea completely covering our West
3. We have an ocean/large sea to our south

That means that we can only expand in one direction, East.
If there is anyone close to us AND East of Us, they have us completely pinned against the sea to our west. That would be an unworkable:sad: start and it is just not possible that we would get a start like that.

Since we cant go North(snow) and we cant go South or West (water), and thus we MUST expand East... added to the reality that the mapmaker would not pin us to the ocean, FORCING us to kill a neighbor to our west just to get acces to the land west of us... We might be either:
1. On our own island,
2. On an island with another team at the other end, in a similar position as us
3. In the Northern Corner of a Doughnut Map with an ocean center.
4. The only other possibility is that we are on some wacky Snaky Island penninsula.
AND that we would be able to reach the next landmass with a single border-pop... so IDK:confused:... what is the probability that I can stay batting 1.000, for map-related predictions?;):dunno:

That is just because we tech AH first. AH takes longer to tech than Mining or Agriculture (or any of the other techs available at the beginning), which is probably what the other teams went for. Also, we built a worker first... you always start out in last place when you build workers and settlers early, but you catch up more quickly with your early improvements and cities.

^ I know, it was more of a joke.

I thought the Golden Rule of Civ was to build a worker first, but you're saying we're the only team that did so?

Other teams may have gone for a WB if they had seafood resources. But I think it is more likely that they completed a low level tech (like ag) while we went for AH.

Batting 1.000 but getting directions crossed :p. MUST expand *east*? Although we should settle the SE tip of the island...expansion in both directions may well be possible. Yes, as our 2nd city.

Edit: Please enable tile yields for screen shots from now on. In addition to ocean tiles that betray more land nearby, we can see strategic resources in other teams' borders if they know the tech and we don't...and it makes planning a bit easier.

Tile yeild is on I think, if it's not I will make sure it's on for this turn.

Your wish is granted:salute:

Also, I think that the scout should move to the far SE corner of the Island, so that if someone else is exploring near there or there is a border pop or something like that, we see it.

So move him to the hill or the forest?

I'm adding this screenie to give those who can't pull up the game a screenie with the island SW.

Wait, we need our next build, what shall it be?

We are definitely not the only team who went worker first. Sirius went WB first and hooked up a coastal fish on turn 6, but the Mavs are definitely going worker first or they would have grown by now and it will be done on turn 12 just as ours will. Sirius is probably going worker next while working their 5f tile. It should be done on turn 13. If Quat doesn't grow next turn (t=11) then they are also building a worker who will be done on t=12. If they do grow on turn 11, that means they were building a WB which was probably done on t=10. CDZ is most likely also going worker first. We will know for sure if they don't grow on t=11. Also Merlot is also building a worker first.

So it looks like most likely Sirius is the only one who went WB first and they improved a fish with it, so no one has an exploring WB yet. All will most likely have a worker on t=12, except for Sirius who will have one on t=13. Two teams (Merlot, Mavs) cannot be building anything but a worker.

Other teams may have gone for a WB if they had seafood resources. But I think it is more likely that they completed a low level tech (like ag) while we went for AH.

I have been able to figure out the techs our opponents tech with a high degree of certainty. You can see this discussion in the (TOP SECRET) thread if you like, but here it is for your convenience...

CDZ teched Mining on turn 6, working a 3c water tile.
Sirius teched Mining on turn 8, working a 0c tile.
Merlot, Quat, and Mavs all teched Agriculture and finished on turn 9, all working a 0c or 1c tile (most likely 0c tiles).

What can we conclude from this? Well that Merlot, Quat, and Mavs monopoly resources probably include 1 farmable (rice, wheat, corn). We know that Sirius got fish as one of their monopolies. CDZ and Sirius possibly have a mineable (gems or gold) or maybe they were just heading straight for BW.

I will do some more work to see if I can tell what they are researching now.

EDIT: Sirius worked a 0f3h plains hill until turn 6 when they improved a coastal fish. They definitely switched right then to work that tile. So they were working a 0c tile until t=6, but then they worked a 5f3c tile.
