Turn Discussion

Our culture won't be able to stop the Merlot workboat. So we need to have a solid plan to intercept and destroy it. The prefered place to attack is off the Mavericks penninsula before they round the cape. We can use our western culture bridge to cut them off.

They have a galley right next to the Rio Grande, so the longer we can delay the DoW the better chances of finding safe harbor with the Amazons. And if we are lucky we can get safe harbor for the Ganges as well. Here is the thing though- until Amazons or Sirius found a mainland city we won't be able to gift our boats to them. So safe harbor will have to be hiding in one of the channels until then. The Rio Grande can head up the Amazon channel so it wont be right behind the Merlot galley.

I don't think Merlot will actively hunt down our workboats with their galley. Their #1 priority is to use that galley to make contact. But if we DoW then they will certainly destroy our boats if we make them easy targets.
---------------

Getting the worker a turn earlier by switching from cottage to forest is good. The new worker should go chop that forest, then move to the spices and road, then build a plantation (I think the timing works out just right).

With the new developments we probably should pick up our third city on the home island. Will have to see whether a chop or roading/going to the wheat is better now.

If CDZ settle north enough we might consider still getting the "Cape City" in the future though, but certainly they have the Asymptote spot blocked off. And I would be sure to get Resonance fourth (unless we still want to do Resonanace third, that could still be possible, or for that matter Cape City third, though that might annoy CDZ.

Edit: I think our galley will be fine on cutting off the MERLOT workboat, it can get to India's peninsula through Quatron culture and back. We're going to need to send Merlot a message when they are in sight of Continuum culture that we'd ask them to not sail on, to start though.

For worker/city plans - I'm thinking settler => settler works in Continuum, I would prefer fourth city overseas now (third being Singularity). So I'm thinking the worker can chop, then get to the wheat, the other wheat, and the iron in due time.

Well, I am sorry to be right this time, which is why I named the city "Asymptote" for a reason, as I knew it would be our potential eastern external border. I got a lot of criticism for that proposal, but now its gone, and no need to think about it for a while. I think we should consider repairing relations with Maverick, and press on CDZ again.

Well, I am also sorry to be right this time, which is why I didn't want to go for Stonehenge, as I knew we would want to expand right away. I got a lot of criticism for that proposal, but now it's gone- no need to bring it up again.

:o ;)

Alright ladies, lets put the claws away ;)

We knew that Stonehenge was an opportunity cost. What we haven't done is try to accelerate our production to catch up. The current settler is getting chop rushed. We plan to do a government change en route which means that we'll have whipping at our disposal. I'm still favouring another chop (spice forrest) after that to rush the second settler.

Oh, and I still think that settling off island next is the way to go. I just don't think DeNile has enough time to do everything.

Well, if we settle off-island next there's a real debate where - if we do cities 3 and 4 at Resonance and the Cape that would about equalize with CDZ. Depending on what they do and if we abandon the peninsula we have better sites in Resonance + Axiom (on the Indian peninsula) and of course our third city on island.

The galley might have to come back rather quickly if we settle overseas next though, that's true.

I might also consider building another worker in Quatron after its granary, probably at pop 3 but maybe we go to pop 4 first. I think that's better than another building like a library or starting on a wonder though, and we will need workers. (Or I guess a workboat could work too, no slowing of growth, and particularly if we settle towards the petal near India)

I think it's best to just avoid the peninsula right now and go for the better city spots like Singularity and Resonance. Cape City will never be as good as either of those two cities, and it's simply not worth whatever small strategic advantage we might gain from it at this point. We want Resonance and Singularity up and running (and paying for themselves) sooner rather than later. This means more money and production in the long run.

Based on those Bananas that were just revealed we might consider moving Resonance south 2 tiles (or even S, SE). I expect MrBanana would support this proposal. ;)

Oh and good move positioning the warrior so he will get a border push from the CDZ city. As for the barb warrior, that's just the standard 25% bonus that all warriors get for defending in cities.

It would depend on whether you value working 2x Clams vs Clams & Bananas. Culture would probably end up providing the bananas to the empire just not straight away. That and we don't get the extra +1:health: till Grocer.

Perhaps all the resources are on the center line?

But the northern clams could be worked by another city so its not like we would be giving them up. They might even be necessary to feed another city claiming a key resource we can't see yet.

Argh, this just annoys me more with CDZ...they could have had clams and banana on their own if we'd still had Asymptote for the stone, everything is thrown off.

But I agree we might need some more exploring before speculation. There is certainly room for three cities where we now have two marked out - Cosmos and Resonance. So the more resources the merrier, we'd have the space and can make it work.

Thanks for the recap, that was great, and I also have thoughts on specific things upcoming:

-As mentioned let's be careful with barbs, but yeah, that's just a normal warrior, no promos. For the record along with a base defense I think everyone also gets 25% against barbs when defending a city (warriors thus really do better than you'd think, even in a non-hill city with no culture, they fortify for a base +75% against barbs)

-For city builds though - I guess I'm okay with overseas next, so we still are wondering about Cape City versus Resonance? In either case, I'd finish up some chops (if Singularity is a fourth city, the worker still has time to go farm the wheat) in Continuum. And in Quatron, I'd probably build a worker or workboat next (worker maybe after we hit size 4, workboat obviously does not stagnate.) AMAZON should have at least one workboat coming around the bend not too far off though.

In the medium-long term, I'd probably want to keep settling and hit up solid coastal sites - this means on the Indian side of things at least that we settle that "Axiom/Aridia" city. But if we find significant resource deposits inland we can hopefully be flexible to claim them too.

With tech and diplomacy, I like the plan for us, the Q, to take the lead in compass and optics technology...past that may be influenced by our allies, but I wouldn't even be against setting somebody on astro, sure it'd take the team a large amount of turns but we'll have enough others picking up Civil Service and other lines of tech.

It'll be a long time before we actually feel any negative effect from losing a peninsula city, if it ever happens. We'll end up settling stronger city sites for a while, by which point we'll probably be about ready to start a fight anyway. I think we'll make it work just fine.

Just logged in, noticed this:

This means that to prevent contact, we have to immediately turn the DeNile around and give Merlot no warning whatsoever. We can pretend that the galley is going to load another warrior onto the peninsula, then sink it:

CDZ also built Spamville, and our warrior was pushed the wrong way:

As I was about to log out, obsolete had a chat with me:

Didn't log the whole chat, but got some important parts.
Some notes:
Testing our relations with Amazons; saying that Amazons have a WB with 3 galleys behind it 1 turn away
Amazons sent them a cryptic message, and Sirius renegaded. Don't ask me what it means, although you can try and decipher their ramblings from the screenie.
They are also building the Pyraminds

We should turn our galley around, drop off the loaded warrior in the forest by the Resonance site, kill the Merlot workboat and then pick up our first warrior and take him to the Mav peninsula.

But... we should only kill the Merlot boat if CDZ agrees to kill the Mav workboat and Sirius agrees to kill the Merlot galley. Its pointless to go to war with Merlot if Mavs and Merlot can still make contact with other boats anyways.

We need to figure this out before we move this turn

Yeah, we do need to figure this out. I don't particulary mind if the galley needs to go back...it's not really the most crucial to get the warrior over to the Indian-side petal. And since barbs are popping up it might just help having the two warriors over by Resonance, wherever we settle it. (By the way, I am definitely liking Resonance being a city on that river corner to get 1x clams and banana, the second clams going to an intermediate city, and of course Cosmos up towards the jungle eventually has a couple of clams.)

It's not too late to warn MERLOT though - they have at least three turns before they are clear of our borders, if we "warned" them now that is ample time.

We do need agreement on stopping Mavericks' boats and MERLOT's boat around the other way though, I agree with that. So working on some messages is probably what we need to do.

Are we sure Merlot's galley is going that way? I would think they would use it as transport for settlers/ warriors like us. My concern is that if we give Merlot warning, they can turn around, and then the Mavericks will find them a few turns later if they hide somewhere. I do not want DeNile to go chasing it.

They can't really hide in many places, assuming CDZ stops Mavericks from going further, they'd not make it to the "channel" on CDZ's side to hide and everywhere else is straight coastline - but yeah, we probably do just want their workboat dead.

I think we do have confirmation that the MERLOT galley is following right around our Rio Grande workboat, if that's not so then someone should point it out though. But it looks like they've gone far enough that there's nowhere they would be going but onwards to AMAZON.

The chop has gone thru and there was a consequence that we didn't think of.
6:health: - 7:yuck: = -1 :food:

:(

oops, seems the 0.5 :health: for forest was required and we still have to chop out one more for the spices.

I'll put some screenies up tomorrow however there hasn't been much change this turn.
