Turn processing times

One of my major questions for Civ 6 was the time to process turns, I like to play on huge maps filled with civs (and some dynamic mods like RevDCM) and in both Civ 4 and Civ 5 the end game slows to a crawl (yet I still soldier on because I enjoy the sense of scale so much)

The new batch of unedited gameplay has allowed us to see the turn processing times for the first time and I have to say it hasn't been very encouraging - or is that just me? It's hard to tell whether it's just units moving around that's extending the length between turns, but for the era they were playing in (3500BC) I would expect the turns to be very snappy.

What do you think?

1. We don't know specs the game was played on.
2. The game optimizations are so in progress, developers didn't present the requirements yet. Also keep in mind - press build is not latest one in terms of technology.
3. The ration in speed between early and late game could change.

I'm also very worried about the long turn times. I really hope that they massively improve upon release. At the moment they might be even worse than Civ V...

5 is awful, even on standard maps above "recommended" specs. If 6 is worse it'll be a deal breaker for me unfortunately. Let's hope release build works better.

The livestream has increased my concerns. The turn times were awful...

I couldn't tell watching, but I really, really hope that you can actually do stuff in between turns, like you could in V before they hotfixed it out because it was exploitable. Sometimes it feels like I spend more time waiting in V than actually playing, even though I'm way above recommended specs.

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully they improve things in that regard before release. Overall, the game looks pretty amazing, but the turn times are a concern.

Quill made a good point in this playthrough, that this probably has debug features on that increase the memory and cpu use (as to collect said data for analyse)

People need to remember this is Beta software, it is far from finished, and there are many minor things that aren't fleshed out (including graphical, aestethic aspects like voice over, text, debug options etc)

me too I'm worried about this
I don't believe they haven't been running the game on high end computers for this press release. I hope there is room for optimization, or that the game doesn't get much slower as it gets closer to the end.
The game looks great but wait time is something that really breaks enjoyment, it does something like make you feel unsure it's worth sitting on the computer that long for this amount happening and learning.
We will see how it goes >.< regardless i want to say good job to the devs for making the game really interesting and hope we're not running into a technical problem with turn wait times >.< don't release game until it's ready >.<

The build is a month old, and oftentimes it's hard to perform optimizations too early when you're worried things can change. I expect there will be some level of optimization still before we get it.

Also it needs to be tested with animations removed. It does a huge difference in Civ5 and from what I see in civ6 the move animation is rather slow.

yes it helped little bit in civ 5. but try play on huge map on later eras. have to wait from 5-10 minutes on the turns. it is more waiting than playing later in the game so it takes the fun out of it. I really like big maps to play on.
It needs to get better in civ 6. seems like they didnt come up with any solutions to that from what i can see now. can only hope..

I think its my #1 concern now (most others pretty much addressed). It makes a big difference on whether I keep playing or not I think. It needs to be efficient.

Civ 5 vanilla release was beta software too.

Do you really anticipate drastically faster turns in a few months? Unless animations are adding egregious time even off screen (that would reflect extremely poorly on civ 6 efforts to optimize) it's unlikely to suddenly be fast.

I have zero trust on this matter, and good reason to lack it.

Civ 5 has really quick turn times for me so its not universal. This build is a month old so no I'm not freaking aout about turn times in a build FOUR months from release. That had capture software running and debug tools and was set to autosave EVERY turn.

When people have claimed civ 5 has had "really quick" times, when actually timing it they have found that in actuality they still spend hours per game between turns on standard maps.

What is the average amount of time you spend between turns in the mid-late game on standard and huge maps, with animations off? Are you getting 10 seconds or less?

I will estimate that you are not.

I will buy the excuses for civ 6 running slow now when I see evidence that the game can run fast. Absent that evidence, I'll go ahead and stick with a track record that doesn't care about turn times or UI as the anticipated outcome.

Meh, if I could double the turn times but get an AI twice as smart, I'd make the trade in an instant

A lot of us probably would, but the ratio isn't remotely near that, and a lot of non-tactical AI incompetence is a deliberate part of design .

Agreed. I've started playing exclusively on small maps to make the turn waits reasonable, which I shouldn't have to do. Granted, I don't have a top of the line PC, but it's not bad.

I'm cautiously optimistic about VI, though, because they still have several months to optimize (and the preview build we saw is already apparently a month or so old).
