Turtle strategy not working

Because archers don't do much damage to high strength units, and because the strength 4 scouts aren't even a speed bump, and because it was a ridiculous strategy based on theorycraft.

But, I think you knew this :-)

Hell, those were my counter arguments back then. It would be a nice idea if combat numbers didn't scale so much, but a Spearman can easily crush a Scout without problems.

BTW, judging from your location, I'm guessing you didn't actually try the strategy. It would be nice if someone gave it a shot.

I did, demo is available. Played all 3 civs to 100 turns and actually rushed Elizabeth as Persia.

OK, cool then. I've never tried rushing Lizzy. I've been content to take City-States instead.

Im managing fine with a couple of chariot archers and triremes as Lizzy. I dont use scouts in the front line, I have just 1 - 2 spearmen, 2 chariot archers, and 2 triremes and I manage to shoot and significantly weaken, if not kill units outright, and capturing cities is easy.

One thing is broken - The AI doesnt build ships or embark units. Playing as Elizabeth is just outright cheating by using 4 movement embarked units, and 7 movement triremes to capture coastal cities, and defend your own.

That could be technology based problems for the AI, or lack of technology they have discovered yet, in the videos from 2K Greg it clearly shows (at more later stage of game) The enemy having a navy and im sure i saw the little transport boats that you get moving a land unit onto water.

To actually manouver a unit onto water i think its Sailing and Opticts that you need.

The turtle strategy only works after you build the "Monument to your Hero MrGameTheory" wonder.

Ironically, I did use a scout as cover for my archers in a city siege. But it was really just bait so the city would go after it instead of my better units (the AI has a habit of targeting the easiest to kill units in my experience so far).

You have to have the Scouts find ruins and be promoted to archers.... that is the real key to victory.... Archers that move like scouts are awesome.... then you can promote them Longbowmen if you play as Lizzy and rule the middleages.

I am finding that Archers are powerful, esp. with upgrades, but no, turtling seems to be crap.

Yeah, Archers are good, but everyone knew they'd be good. You still have to protect them with actual units that can actually stand up in a fight.
