Tusk1 - Ladies First

0 1500 BC

Rules so far:

Cannot trade with France, we are too shy.
If we trade with Egypt, it must be tech for tech. As soon as we learn something we swap it for something that Egypt knows that we don't.
Lover Russia will be the first to die, somehow.
On England we declared war on the turn we met. But once we get peace, if we can, we are within the rules.

Spot and post about we are treating England as our Ex when she could be our Mate. That confusion, and what MeteorPunch clarified about the Ex, gives me enough wiggle to explore peace with England.

We give England Peace and 9 of 19 gold to get Peace and Myticism.

Egypt won't trade Iron Working for Mysticism.

Download MP6_1750BC save from that thread's post #49. In it, Spain is the Lover and war had been declared but in 1750 BC there is peace between the Vikings and the Spanish.

We give Our Lover Russia Peace and Mysticism for Peace and Iron Working.

We have Iron on the hill 1NW of Satsuma (unconnected).
France has one Iron on the mountain 1S of Rheims.
Egypt is Iron-less.
Englad has one Iron on the coast, but not inside her borders.
Russia, well, we can't see enough to know.
[IBT]
Toyko: barracks -> vSpear in 7.
We get the auto notice that our checking account is low and running in the negative due to our new barracks.

England is building The Pyramids (Masonry).
France is building The Pyramids.

1 1475 BC

Russia learned Horseback Riding.
Russia is still miffed at us and refuses to discuss anything about Horseback Riding. Well, we should not be surprised. Catherine does have a rather horse-ish face. This could be a case of not sharing family secrets.

Begin mining the Gems SW of Osaka.
Move Worker onto desert tile near Satsuma.

[IBT]
Get Booted by Joan.

2 1450 BC

BG mined NE of Kyoto, send both Workers south to improve BGs around Kyoto.
Kyoto is now size 4; granary in 3.

Road the desert near Satsuma.

Curragh 'invades' Russian waters.

Drop science to 80%, which gives Code of Laws in 12, not 11. Nine gold. GPT goes from -1 to +2. I don't want to make mistakes with money when we have less than 10 gold.

France has a cute little worker for sale, dressed like a pretty little French Maid, but we have that blasted Rajesh Koothrappali Syndrome to deal with and can't get up the nerve to talk to her about maybe buying/trading for that charming vixen. We don't have any Wines connected, either, which would at least give us some liquid courage to perhaps allow us to try to talk to her before we pass out.

Spoiler :

The Worker looked like this:

[IBT]
Lover Russia wants our Curragh to leave. We boldly offer to kiss and make up, but all we get is a 'Hrmph'.

Osaka: vArcher -> vArcher in 4.

3 1425 BC

New vArcher heads to Edo.
Workers move onto BG 1NW of Kyoto.
Begin to mine BG 1E of Toyko.

Fortify a Warrior to keep an eye on Thebes.
[IBT]
Edo: barracks -> granary in 20.

4 1400 BC

Start mining the BG 1NW of Kyoto.
[IBT]
Kyoto: granary -> Worker in 2 and grows in 2.
Toyko: vSpear -> vSpear in 7.

5 1375 BC

We meet the lovely, snarly and cheaply busty Isabella of Spain. We'd rather be married to semi-slutty Isabella than high-and-oh-so-mighty Elizabeth but we cannot.

We declare War on Spain and their six cities.

Egypt knows Horseback Riding but we have nothing to trade for it.

Archer arrives in Edo. Fortifies.

Satsuma is connected. Worker moves onto Iron hill to road.

New Spear in Toyko heads to Satsuma.

Curragh gladly leaves our Cranky Lover behind.
[IBT]
Osaka: vArcher -> vArcher in 3.
Satsuma: rCurragh -> catapult in 10.

Russia is building The Great Library (Literature -> Education).

6 1350 BC

New Archer heads towards Satsuma.
Spear arrives in Satsuma.
Start roading the Iron at Satsuma.
Curragh sails from Satsuma. Spanish borders due east of Satsuma.

We are now two over our free unit support limit. We have 22 units and support just 20.

It will be awhile before our next city is planted, so we decrease science from 80% to 70%, 14 gold and GPT goes from -2 to +0. Code of Laws in 9 turns, not 8.
[IBT]
Kyoto: worker -> settler in 4 (8 shields per turn).

7 1325 BC

French Warrior blocks Archer's path to Satsuma.

BG mined at Kyoto, now we road.

New worker moves 1S, across a river, to irrigate a grassland tile, which will begin the water route to Toyko and Satsuma.

Fortify Spear in Satsuma.
[IBT]
Egypt builds Giza, 3S of Thebes, and puts our snooping warrior inside their borders.

8 1300 BC

Irrigation begins.

We leave our Archer on the road, eyeing the nearby French Warrior. We're shy but we're not stupid.
[IBT]
Joan asks for Pottery. We blush and give it to her.

Preboot from our Girlfriend over the Warrior she got into trouble by building a new city.

Osaka: vArcher -> vArcher in 3.

9 1275 BC

BG 1W of Kyoto mined and roaded. Send these two workers to Edo to mine that BG.
BG at Toyko mined and roaded, too. Move to road the other plains tile.
New Archer goes to Kyoto, to escort the new settler.
[IBT]
Egypt abuses our Warrior and kicks himm out of her land.

Egypt is building The Great Library (Literature -> Education).

10 1250 BC

Egypt knows Map Making, a monopoly tech.

Start mining the BG at Edo.
Start road at Toyko.
Road to Gems is done, leave Worker Active.
Archer arrives in Tokyo.

And the save is attached.

I did the turns without seeing Elepantium's response to my post. I did not go back and 'edit' my in-turn comments.

Real Life has been a bit wilder than I expected. Sorry for the delay in getting this posted.

Japan 1250 BC, Zoomed Out
Spoiler :

We need a place for our new settler to go next turn. I have marked some possible city sites.

Blue Dot or Yellow Dot are already next to roads, so they will be connected when they are built. I like Yellow over Blue since it will fill a gap between Tokyo and Satsuma. Blue will just expand to Toyko but leave that gap open. Pink Dot is just 3SE of Yellow Dot and gets us closer to a second Iron deposit, which is 2S of Pink Dot. Light Green Dot I really don't like but it does secure Gems for us and would give us a canal city.

Not shown in the screen shot is that there is Incense at the south end of this land, 6S-2SW of the Iron deposit.

Random Stuff

We made peace with England and Russia. We got Iron Working in those deals. We have a soucre of Iron near Satsuma that will be connected in two more turns.

We have met Spain. We are at War with Isabella. Wife or Ex, it sure to be a rocky ride with her.

We have not met Byzantium or Greece. They must be cohabitating in the New World.

We have a worker still active on the Gems SW of Osaka.

Settler completes in Kyoto this IBT. But we need more than just one more.

We have two Curraghs in play. And we have several coastal tiles where Curraghs and Galleys can cross safely. However, Spain has some coastal cities too, so we need to explore that coastline. We might be able to cross the sea tiles and avoid Spanish interference.

We are going to need a navy to take out Russia. Helioplois of Egypt, a canal city, blocks us from walking through Egypt to get to Russia.

It would be nice if we could edit the save and update the AI names to include their role in this game. Like from Russia to Our Lover Russia or Russain Lover or even (shudder) From Russia, With Love. At the moment I don't have the time or skills to do that.

Military
06 Worker
09 Warrior
05 Archer
02 Spear
02 Curragh

Current Units: 24
Allowed Units: 20
Support Costs: -4 gpt

Spain is the wife and supposed to be the last to get the axe; so why did we declare war on her? We are supposed to have Spain as an ally in wars.

Roster check:

Elephantium
CommandoBob - just played
Kulko - skip
LKendter - up!
MrRandomGuy - on deck

MrRandomGuy: I probably shouldn't answer for CBob, but I gather that he was confused about whether Spain was supposed to be Wife or Ex...

Comments:

We don't need any more Spears at this point. Tokyo should switch to an Archer.
Edo really should have gotten that Granary before the Barracks. The faster growth will be helpful, but it's annoying to pay the upkeep for the Barracks while we're not building military.
We desperately need more cities. Osaka can build a Settler after the Archer completes.
I asked that we send the Russian Curragh north...unfortunate that it got missed.
A short war with Egypt to take Memphis is tempting...
War with Spain...marriage is off to a rocky start.

Our available land isn't very inspiring, but...

Red dot gets our Gems hooked up. I'd send the next Settler out of Osaka there.

Blue dot will have low corruption, nice production from those three Oasis tiles, and fills in the gap in our territory around Tokyo nicely.

Green dot will eventually get access to those two fish, and it's one of the few riverside spots available to us.

Purple isn't great by itself, but it will help Tokyo develop.

Black fits in nicely between Edo and Satsuma. We need to irrigate across the desert before going here, though.

White and gray really just help fill in our territory.

Up, but totally confused with who is who. Can I get an updated summary? I'm not playing to I see that.

MrRandomGuy: I probably shouldn't answer for CBob, but I gather that he was confused about whether Spain was supposed to be Wife or Ex...
Yep, I was.

On the bright side, since we are at war with our Wife, well, no, there is no bright side, just a darkly cynical side that postulates a marriage as a series of un-ending conflicts.

Red Skelton said:

I asked that we send the Russian Curragh north...unfortunate that it got missed.
Sorry about that.
A short war with Egypt to take Memphis is tempting...
We will soon have Swords and she won't. In time, she will see how wise we were to that upon ourselves the responsibilty of managing Memphis for her. :D
Our available land isn't very inspiring, but...
I like your dot map better than mine. I like the Green Dot location and almost included it in mine, but it seemed too close to Osaka.

With this terrain, CxxC is hard to do very well.

Definitive version for LK :)

Relationships:
1. France - The first we meet becomes our first "crush" (yes, even if it's Catherine). We are too shy to trade with her...ever.
2. Egypt - The second becomes our "girlfriend." We trade every tech as one for one deals as long as a trade is available until every civ is met.
3. Russia - The third becomes our "lover." Must be the first civ attacked and conquered. Doesn't make any sense? Neither does love.
4. England - Fourth is the "Ex." Must declare war with no trading on the first turn met.
5. Spain - Fifth is Wife. Mutual partner, must attempt to ally in wars. Last to get the Axe.

We have a few wars that don't make much sense right now, but hey -- that's love.

1250 BC (0)
This is just weird. Spain is our wife, but we are at war with them. It is pretty tough to ally in wars that way.

1225 BC (1)
I disband the warriors exploring the tundra. There is nothing more we can explore, and our science rate sucks.

1200 BC (2)
Russia has a worker for sale, but I doubt it is as hot as the French one.

1175 BC (3)
We give Spain literature and math for horseback riding and peace.

1150 BC (4)
Kagoshima is founded, giving us a source of gems.
(IT) Our next tech is map making. If we can found a spot on the other side of Egypt, we can build a staging zone city to take the war to Russia.

1125 BC (5)
Hopefully Egypt isn't working on code of laws so that we can trade that for map making after some research is done.

1050 BC (8)
(IT) I stare at the screen for a while, and decide to say no to Egypt's demand for code of laws. She is a wuss and no war.

1025 BC (9)
We give Egypt one tech - code of laws for one tech - map making.
There are now galley in progress.
Summary:

Hopefully our little ship can spot a landing spot for a city vs. Russia, but it isn't looking good so far.

I've looked at the save. Some thoughts...

Good work on getting water to Satsuma and Tokyo - it'll be good to have them growing again.
Kyoto should switch to a Sword before building another Settler -- we don't want the city going all the way down to size 2.
Make sure Tokyo works the irrigated tile once the worker job finishes in 2 turns.

We need a few more Workers. Maybe switch the Galley to Worker in Edo and then build one each in Kyoto and Osaka after their current Swords finish?

I'd say we can disband some regular Warriors, too - they're costing us gpt when we need to boost our research.

(0) 1000 BC

- Notice France and Spain have Pol. Buy pol from Spain for Code of Laws since we can't trade with France

- Egypt has no techs we can trade for Pol.

- No other civ has anything good to trade.

- I decide to keep the Settler build in Kyoto since it will be completed in 3 turns and the city will reach size 4 in 2 turns.

- According to our Military adviser we have a strong army compared to everyone except Spain. We have an average military compared to Spain.

IBT

- Egypt sends a warrior and settler into our territory. I don't like it one bit.

- Russia asks removal of troops. I apologize to her.

- Tokyo completes swordsman. Production starts on worker.

- Receive notification of the English completing the Pyramids. They switch production to The Oracle.

- Notification of the French building TOA and Oracle.

(1) 975 BC

- Move troops to block Egypt from moving further south into our territory.

- Nara is founded. Production set for spearman.

- Use the tiny ships to explore.

IBT

- Notification of Russians building MOA.

- volcano by Egyptian territory erupts.

(2) 950 BC

- raise science to 70% (forgot to do that last turn)

- complete the land blockade preventing Egypt from moving south into our territory

- ships explore, minor worker actions

IBT

- Egypt settlers and units move back to their territory.

- Kyoto finishes settler. Production changed to swordsman.

- Notification of Egyptians building TOA

(3) 925 BC

No one has anything good to trade for techs. Keep ships exploring.

IBT

- Osaka completes swordsman. Production changed to worker.

- Tokyo completes worker. Production changed to harbor.

- Kag completes walls. Change production to archer.

(4) 900 BC

- I disband the warrior on the mountains by Egyptian territory. I see no use for him.

- Continued exploration and worker movements.

IBT

- Edo finishes galley. Production set for worker.

- Spain builds the Oracle and is building TOA

- Byzantines build TOA

(5) 875 BC

- England has 11 gold but that's just not worth selling a tech over.

- Nagoya is founded. Production set for spearman.

- I send the galley south.

- Science rate increased to 80%. It gives us a deficit of -2 gpt. I make a tax collector in Kyoto to reduce the deficit to -1.

IBT

- Osaka produces worker. Production changed to swordsman.

- Notification of Russians and Spain building Great Lighthouse.

(6) 850 BC

- Edo produces worker. Change production to spearman. Not an exciting year.

(7) 825 BC

zzzzz

(8) 800 BC

zzzzz

(9) 775 BC

- Kyoto produces swordsman. Production changed to worker.

- Osaka produces swordsman. Production changed to harbor.

(10) 750 BC

zzzzz

I left a swordsman active so I wouldn't accidentally trigger the end of turn.

Summary

The focus was on military, workers, and settling a few more towns. Our military is considered strong in comparison to every civ we know.

Spain appears to be the main contender for the tech race. She has discovered Construction and we are in the process of discovering Currency. We currently have a deficit of -1gpt and 6 gold. The next person to take the save should trade a tech with England for gold after a few turns to keep the science rate up. Hopefully we can get Currency before Spain does and trade it for Construction.

Did we have any luck in finding a spot for a city on the other side of Egypt?

Elephantium - up after LK150 done. ;)
CommandoBob
Kulko
LKendter - just played
MrRandomGuy -

The only spots for cities on the other side of Egypt would be south of Spain, which doesn't really fit with our plans of conquering Russia first.

Questions and comments...

Why are we building so many Spearmen? I thought we had too many after the last turnset -- and we're at the limit of our unit support. IMO we should be building Swords for offensive punch.
Nara is on the wrong tile  - it was 1NW on my dotmap in order to be on the river.
Why does Kyoto have a tax man?
The Workers next to Kyoto would have been better used to start roads on nearby grassland or plains tiles, IMO. Satsuma, Nara, and Nagoya will need more tiles improved very soon. Plus we'll need roads to the other dots in the dotmap.
Kagoshima is building an Archer, but it has no barracks. We'll want to build one there before building any military.

I'll play my set after LK150 is done :)

The spearmen are built for the new city defense. Yes we do need swordsman, but we also need defense in our core as well as a few defensive units sent to the front to absorb attacks.

:S Sorry about Nara being on the wrong tile. The settler was at that very spot when I received the save and I thought that's where we wanted the city to be. Yes, I did check the map multiple times. I'm mad at myself now for making that stupid mistake.

Kyoto has a tax man to counter the deficit. I had the mindset of hoping that we discover currency before Spain does so that we can trade that for construction. I didn't like doing it that way either and it's not something I normally do so early on. I've done it before but not a lot of times.

I disagree on defense in our core. What's going to attack there? They have to get past our outlying towns first. :trouble: No, build Swords; they can whack anyone that tries to walk in to take our undefended capital.

I think we're both right :)

A few spears are necessary for defense against fast units as well as swordsmen for attack.

What ratio of defensive units to offensive units do you think is best?
