Twillight of Byzantium

Being at war with the Ottomans can suck pretty bad though. :/

Realism. The Ottomans swept aside everyone else at the time. What else could you expect?

well... strictly speaking the civs in Italy should be relatively safe... and bear in mind that a joint venetian-spanish-papal fleet whipped them at lepanto not long after this scenario ends, but yeah, it is historically accurate in that the christians are all to busy fighting each other to stop the turks:)

Yes but Lepanto is in 1571, and it's everyone still standing vs. the Turkish fleet. We start in the fourteenth century, Your Grace.

hmmm... not quite, just 'everyone still standing who has a decent navy'... like the austrian habsburgs and the protestants were to busy fighting each other to get involved, the military orders didn't want to subordinate themselves to Philip II, the genoans saw more profit in selling weapons than using them, etc. If it had been everybody still standing, the victory at lepanto could have been followed up with the land assualt that the man in charge that day, Philip's half-brother Don Juan de Austré (Prince John of Austria) wanted and the turks might have been kicked out of the Balkans 4 centuries earlier than they eventually were... who knows?

and yes, but consider that a century in civ is like 75-100 turns... then the 14th to the 16th century is reallly only the length of a moderately long scenario like 'The Desert and the Mountain'

and enough with the 'your grace', Skimmer, ok? i told you to stop being so deferential. Just 'Sir' or 'Commander' will be fine. If you prove yourself, that'll be 'Mister'

Actually the battle of Lepanto is probably one of the most overrated victories in Western history-writing.

They did defeat the Ottomans, but it didn't take along time before they had an even bigger navy.

The Ottoman decline really began at the gates of Vienna.

Yes, that's true. If Don John had been allowed to follow up Lepanto with a land assault on Cyprus and the Balkans, then the Ottoman decline might have started then. As it was, the one Emir who escaped from Lepanto with most of his fleet intact headed (slowly) for Tunisia. After John's failure to get support for the Cypriot adventure, he convinced Philip to let him invade Tunisia, but Philip procrastinated so much that by the time John had captured Tunis and a couple of barbery ports, the Emir turned up with his fleet, whipped the Spanish invasion fleet and recaptured Tunis:)

This scenario was great but a little too short IMO. And the Civilopedia is lacking a lot.

How did you make the treasures capturable? I've been searching the forums but couldn't find any answer. When I try to make such units, the capture button never appears in the game. Even though the military units have "Capture" checked and the treasure has "Immobile" and "Flag unit" checked.

In one of the Scenario Properties tabs, there's a flag something to the effect of "Allow any player to capture any flag". If not checked, you can only "capture" flags which used to belong to another civilization, so if you start with/build yourself/autoproduce the flag, you yourself wouldn't be able to cash it in, but other civs would be.

Sorry for the bump, but does anyone know who did the Hospitaller leaderhead? I want to nominate it in the anniversary competition.

You can always check in the credits text file. :)

Where can I find the credits text file? It's not in the text folder, which just has the Civilopedia, labels, PediaIcons, and script texts.

I don't have ToB installed hre, but you could just do an F3 search. And/or go along to the unit's folder and check if there's a readme.

Nothing turned up.:shake: So if anyone knows who made the Hospitaller leaderhead, please tell me.

Thank you, Yoda Power, smirnoff sent me the link to it in a PM. A wonderful piece of work.

An amazing scenario to say the least. I don't know if you are still active but using the same map you could easily make a new scenario about the Byzantium of the 11th and 12th centuries.

I am not gone. I still mod, but I haven't released anything in a couple of years.

The chances of updating this are very slim, but it might happen one day.
