But my views on tough are different than others. I try to get through a mission without losing anyone, so that's why I wasn't willing to play classic on my first (and only) game and lose most of my squad. Normal is still quite challenging if you try to play without losing anyone to hostile fire.

Well, that's not the goal of the game. Winning at Chess without losing a piece would be much harder than just winning at Chess. Certainly if you set objectives above and beyond "win the game", you can make it (much) harder.

Finished the game last night on normal ironman for my first play through. Found it 'difficult' for the first several missions then once I got the hang of it and had a couple assault/support with decent armor/guns I steam rolled the last part of the game.

Colonel snipers are ridiculous.
Assault is broken.
Ghost is way too powerful especially with run and gun.

Still had a great time with the game, can't wait to play on a harder difficulty or jump into multiplayer!

The Slingshot DLC is out. No patch to go with it, which is rather disappointing... but it does make the decision not to buy this DLC an easy one. According to the official forum the DLC pack breaks save game compatibility. Ouch :(

I just can't see getting this DLC as worthwhile. It's basically a touch of story (about which I could care less for XCOM), a couple new customization options (which I'd likely ignore), and three new missions. Given what I've heard about those missions and how quickly I tend to play, I'd expect that to be about 30-45 minutes of new content - which isn't even that different from what already exists. Not worth it.

That said, I tend to frown on small DLC updates generally. Get me a sizable add-on - something worth loading up a game and playing it all over again just for the add-on - and I'm delighted. Release a bunch of tiny updates spread out over months or years, and I'm just going to ignore them until they're re-bundled as one big package.

Disappointed about no patch. Flanking and overwatch bugs really annoy me atm. If the dlc has an xmas sale I'll probably grab it but not gonna get it atm for over 6 euros.

Agree about the DLC. Not worth it. Just wait until a steam sale when they knock 75% off the face price and pick them all up then. It doesnt even matter that much if its months down the line (because in terms of content you are not missing very much). What I would like for them to do is make the game moddable. It really could be quite awesome if modders are let loose on it. Then you would have stuff like this DLC for free on tap, which would make me happy :).

So word on the official forums and modding forums for this game is that the DLC actually includes some alien AI updates as well - probably stuff that will be bundled in with the next official patch anyways, but as of right now the Slingshot AI is supposed to be smarter than regular XCOM AI - a little more aggressive and potentially suicidal, but definitely more dangerous (a good trade-off; the AI on release was too conservative if the goal is "challenge the player" rather than "die slowly").

@sherbz - yes, there is modding going on for this game. It's not a particularly mod-friendly game, but the demo was pretty mod-friendly which helped build a community that's found workarounds for the changes in official release. The dominant modding forum seems to be The Nexus.

So has anyone actually purchased the DLC and cares to give us a brief synopsis of it. Im not going to buy, but would be nice to hear what a member from the community thinks of it.

I did purchase it. I can't tell much of it yet since my Classic/Ironman campaigns tend to (de facto) end to the second DLC mission which has a strict turn limit. The first DLC mission, however, is a quite standard escort mission with great rewards and lots of aliens; it can be chosen instead of the first council mission. The second DLC mission will appear pretty soon after the first council monthly report, and so far (two takes) it has been too much for my squad. I like the DLC so far (maybe not the difficulty though), but of course its price is quite hefty for the amount of content.

I broke down and purchased it. I will say that I do like some of the additional customization options included (wish there were more, though). Mostly, it is just a few hairstyles, helmets and hats (berets, ballcaps with mic, etc) that I have seen. As far as the special missions, they do add a little bit and extend past the same missions as before. The reward for completing the missions...

Spoiler :
... In my first play through, I never came across the Battleship and missed out on the Blast Launcher. So that is a plus... plus the loot that you receive from the final mission is well worth it.

Anyway... those are my thoughts on it.

Great, I found a new bug.
I launched three satellites in a row and one of them just disappeared. It doesn't give me coverage but still takes up one uplink slot.

Possibly your scientists were confused on what exactly they were supposed to achieve with "Stealth Satellites"

Just grabbed this for a deal, and so far I've been disappointed.

On the most recent mission, there were two incidents that were clear steps back from the original X-Com. First, I had a heavy semi-flanking a couple guys and was in a good position to take them both out with a rocket, but there were some glass doors in the way. I had a nearby assault who, at least in the original, could've fired at the doors to clear the path and allowed the rocket launcher to make the hit. No such option here. Not a huge deal, but that was the kind of thing that made the first one great.

Next, my sniper on the roof... well, she went to the edge, saw some bad guys... now I'm left with a couple options. Withdraw from the edge, and basically never be able to get a shot off (due to the no-move+fire restriction), or I could hunker down at the edge and take a shot the next turn. The edge was partial cover, I was up 2 or 3 stories (and had the height-advantage 'talent'), and I was hunkered down. Didn't stop the jerk on the street from one-shotting her with his plasma pistol. Never woulda happened in the original, and seriously, in what universe does a sniper on a rooftop stay exposed near an edge when all it takes to achieve complete cover is to simply not lean over the edge...... /sigh.

I'm sure there's some learning curve that will take some getting used to, but it definitely feels like more "cover + RNG" instead of "clever planning."

Did GG make a mistake. Last night GG had XCOM on sale 50% off. I went back to the site tonight and now they have it for 25% off and the sale ends in one hour.

GG have made several mistakes on games so did anyone get XCOM for 50% off before GG realized the mistake.

3rd patch is live!

  • Second Wave addition
If a player has beaten the game, they can access a variety of gameplay toggles upon starting a new game. The Second Wave option will be available on the New Game menu.
  • AI teleport bug fix
Minimizes the bug where aliens teleport into the middle of a player’s squad
  • Defeat screen when beating the game
Minimizes a bug that displays a Defeat screen after winning the game
  • PC Only
Chris Kluwe as XCOM Hero unlock
So, this is the Second Wave patch, and that is potentially really, really good :goodjob: As for bug fixes, they "minimized" the Teleport bug. I guess that is good news, although I don't know what "minimize" means in this context. Not really a bug fix patch, though.

I personally view the game so that my task is protecting my squad, not saving the Earth. :p On Classic/Ironman it has proven to be out of my reach so far.

Spoiler :
Needless to say, to me, the end scene is nothing short of sad. :(

Started a campaign with the Second Wave stuff (except 'always critical flanking', which killed my squad in the first mission on Classic...) The long-awaited random stats finally bring back the feel of individual soldiers that was to me the main missing ingredient of the original release.
