Or atleast a city you didn't enjoy visiting, and why?

In terms of physical appearance, i thought Rotterdam was pretty vulgar, and Bratislava appeared to be like a decaying wreck too. That said, the people in both cities were friendly enough.

Detroit. The city center doesn't look too bad, but the surrounding parts
were pretty ugly.

Prague, of course ;)

We should build a dam near Decin (few kilometres southeast from Dresden) and make a "Czech sea". Prague would be a nice underwater theme park :mischief:

Tilburg

I have nothing against it per se, but Tilburg is the only city known to me, where I would not feel comfortable giving someone a tour - on account of their being nothing to see!

I've never been to a city I enjoyed less than Hamburg. Though actually the city itself is pretty beautiful - but I've never meet such an insane number of arrogant rear ends elsewhere.
Almost all Eastern Europian industrial towns were insanely rotten and ugly around 1990. Been in Bratislava in 1991, and I agree that was a prime example.
But that has changed a lot since that time, no question.
Can't get anything from those (former) industrial areas like the German Rhine/Ruhr area. But they're not downright ugly, they just lack anything beautiful. Much like suburbs + shopping centres for 10 million peoples, without any actual cities.

Somehow the ugliest town I remember was Dieppe in France. Can't even tell exactly why; just my first impression on one evening. And I didn't want a second one - changed plans and left the next morning again.

Doc - I was in Bratislava only a few months ago. It's still a mix of vulgar Communist breezeblocks and an old town which perhaps once was charming, but is now rotting and covered in graffiti.

Rangoon. While some parts are very beautiful, most of it is a slum, filled with desperate people looking for any way to get out.

Before or after Bush's visit?

Brussels was/is just one giant construction site. But I was ill when I was there, so was in a bad mood. It probably isn't that bad.....

Most of the big British cities are ugly, due to their being loads of old factories etc, plus council estates!

Anyway, in CZ, the ugliest city is Ostrava - the former communist paradise. Now, entire region is nothing more than a post-apocalyptic landscape, mixture of a barren plains and industrial ruins occupied by gypsies.

If there will ever be a Fallout movie, they should make it there.

Second that. Apart from the Shwedagon, the place is quite ugly... People are nice though.:)

Not that I saw much of it, but I would also say that Vinh is a horrible place, I've never felt so uncomfortable in my whole life with a place.

Most British cities (at least all that I know) have a romantic feature of some kind that lifts them out of being classed ugly. Even Birmingham (previously an industrial powerhouse) can conjure uplifting scenes when you know your way around.

Any city that retains only or mostly soviet-style buildings is probably among the ugliest cities.

Definatly St. Petersburg, the city is really a rotten ruin. And if your not careful the militias will get you. I've been there twice (1996 & 1999) and the people of that area don't seem too fond of Finn's.

St. Petersburg was at one time one of the 5 capitals of Europe. There are many beautiful buildings there and lots of stuff is being rebuilt, since 1991, since 1945 and since 1917. Callling it a rottern ruin is a little strange, but I guess you love the town and the inhabitants the same way they love you back. To me its one of the most beautiful cities in Russia, but it need "restauration" yes.

A lot of indutrial or block cities could be called ugly I guess, so I will not make my own nomination.... any city without history, block like architecture and square road system wins here.

Yeah, it's rather ugly. It almost looks as if someone had destroyed all the old buildings.

I also want to add Hannover...

But reasonably the ugliest city is probably some third world hell hole that I don't want to visit in the first place.

My friendly local metropolis--Detroit. It has so much potential to be a nice-looking city, but it ain't.

I must say, it seems to have a kind of rugged beauty to it.

But then again, I do have an attraction to chaotic landscapes.
