Ugliest city in the world?

St. Petersburg was at one time one of the 5 capitals of Europe.

I'm aware of the city's history, and it has beautiful architechture. But it need's restauration, the city was cleaned for the 300 year birthday of the city, but one can't really call that restauration.

And one of the things that made the visit unpleasant were the local's. I guess some people don't really like finn's that side of the border.

My friendly local metropolis--Detroit. It has so much potential to be a nice-looking city, but it ain't.
I once saw a t-shirt which read "I'm so tough I vacation in Detroit."

"Cleveland: Detroit without the glitter."

Well not knowing the circumstances I cannot comment, but a lot is defined on how you treat people first and (!!!!) speak the language or not. Anyways, yes, "restauration" is needed and some is going on, but "rotten ruin" is not how I would describe the city.

The industrial cities in the surroundings of Rio are pretty ugly. Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçú, Belford Roxo, Nilópolis... I nominate all of them.

And let's not forget Campos dos Goytacazes, in the northeast of the Rio de Janeiro state. That city sucks so much I want the city of Rio to secede from the rest of the state. Campos is a huge slum and also home of the evangelical political mafia. That city should be nuked.

I was as polite as i really could be, one person from our family (who was also on both of those trip's) was the only one of us who Spoke Russian, the rest of us Spoke english (I really did not speak much to the local's on the first trip in 1996, but i started to speak more english on the second trip.) :)

Back in 1996 i could not understand why would they treat us any different from the rest of the local's. That certanly has changed from then.

We also visited the rest of the karelian Isthmus (Karjalan Kannas) and Ladogan Karelia (Laatokan Karjala), one thing that i was really sad about was that in Viipuri and Sortavala, many of the original beautiful (to me) Finnish buildings were being taired down to make room for Russian building types. And the buildings that were left was poorly maintained. (Although even Russian buildings have maintenance problems there)

Well...

I hate the area around Copenhagen. It's all the same boring red small houses and trees. Not real nature, not real city. Then I'd rather have old commie ruins. They look cool :D

Here's a pic so you know what I mean:

Yeah, that's the problem. It's so flat here. Denmark is only nice in the real cities or in the real nature. Anything in between simply sucks!

Id have to 3rd Rangoon... or anything in the former Yougoslavia... nothing worth looking at there.

I must say, it seems to have a kind of rugged beauty to it.

But then again, I do have an attraction to chaotic landscapes.

It has. The city itself is... civilized (although ugly), but its outskirts... I think only the areas surrounding Cernobyl look more... apocalyptic ;)

Memphis, not only is it almost impossible to drive anywhere there without getting extremely pissed off. The buildings around town are just awful looking.

You should play Stalker! :) Ah.... nostalgia...

Gary, Indiana.

Let's just say you don't want to breathe too deeply when passing through there.

Nothing but steel mills, steel mills, and more steel mills.

Athens!

To my surprises, all I saw on my one day guided-tour with my school last spring, was lots of big, ugly blocks with windows and ugly colors. It seemed like they had built most of Athen first, and then found out that they wanted air condition. So they had one air-condition thing outside and under EVERY window in almost every building!

Akropolis looked nice though. :)

BTW, don't you know if is it possible for turists to enter the "hot zone" around Cernobyl, or is it totally closed?
No idea. My logic tells me it is cealed, but my heart refuses to believe it.
