Uncharted Territory: Aabraxan Plays Nice.

Chapter 8: The old Aabraxan rears his ugly head.

Just in case anyone was wondering, here's the political overview:

In 1580, the wars continue, as do the MGLs

1580 -- Germany and Russia sign an alliance against Persia. Space Flight comes in, no SGL. Head for Synthetic Fibers. No culture there, but Modern Armor will help. Given that Greece has an MPP with Sumeria, it seems likely that I'll be fighting Greece soon, too. Besides, the Internet is ~10 turns out, so I can't start on a new wonder yet, anyway.

Sumeria completes The Manhattan Project

Remember that I said I'd be fighting the Greeks soon? Sure enough, on the very same IBT (1580 AD):

1585 AD -- Germany and Russia sign an alliance against Greece.

1595 AD -- I capture Der from the Sumerians. No Wonders, but lots of buildings to sell off. This is also the year that I succeed in pushing the Sumerians off of a small part of the western "wing" of my continent, thus eliminating one front that I've had to guard. The Infantry stationed there are moved to the eastern "wing" and upgraded to mech inf.

Babylon and Russia sign an alliance against Greece.

We catch Gilgamesh trying to plant a spy in our capital.

1600 AD -- The Sumerians take Leipzig and the Greeks take Hamburg, both from the Germans. Life doesn't look pretty for the Germans. Then I turn right around and take Leipzig from the Sumerians.

In an almost unprecedented move, I agree to a ROP with the Babs. Now I can rail a path across their land so that I can get at the Persians.

In 1610 AD, I take another Sumerian city and capture 3 Sumerian artillery, a rarity!

Russia signs peace with Sumeria (in violation of our alliance :gripe:).

Sumeria IMMEDIATELY declares war on the Russians on the same IBT!:lol::lol:

I discover that, in spite of our trade embargo against the Persians, Babylon has granted them an ROP!

Time to go put a stop to this.

In 1615, another MGL shows up.

I decide to use this one to rush the Apollo Program at Aabraxa after The Internet is done.

I will need to end X's ROP with Hammy, and it looks like a tech trade will seal an alliance with Hammy, accomplishing this.

This leaves ~10 Persian units trapped inside Babylonian territory when Hammy DOWs. Unfortunately for Hammy, those units will eat him alive. I also give Hammy refining. I rarely give away a tech, but I need to prop him up a little, for whatever good it may do.

WW is hard on my empire at this point. I have to run 10% science (+ specialists), because I'm running 50% lux. Ouch.

Sure enough, on the IBT, all those Persian units trapped in Babylonian territory decide that he's a much more tempting target than I am. As a result:

Looks like X-man got Hammy's last king unit. Guess that will teach him to be my ally . . . at least until the next game.

In spite of 12 turns remaining in our alliance, Otto bails and makes peace with the Sumerians.

On the IBT, the Greeks come looking for peace. I turn them away, and I hate to say this, but it's time for some peace. My reserves are low, my people are war-weary, all of my alliances have ended and there aren't any resources within easy striking distance of my borders. It's time for the Ottoman Empire to talk Turkey.

Once peace is made, I sell off Space Flight to get some luxes and cash flowing again. That enables me to drop lux spending to 0%, and raise science up again.

Peace reigns once again, The Internet is due in 3, Synthetic Fibers in 2, and an MGL just waiting to rush a Small Wonder.

Good stopping place.

Chapter 9: Endgame

At this point, Aabraxa has 17,890 culture, and is producing 124 culture per turn. The next competing city, Ur, has 6,199 culture. My civilization has 34,326. Sumeria has a total of 47,094. So Sumeria is beating me on a civ-wide scale, but I don't think that they can generate 53k in the time it takes me to generate 2200 in Aabraxa. The Internet is just a few turns out, and I'll rush the Apollo Program on the next turn.

1625 AD -- Synth Fibers comes in. Genetics next. I've never actually researched Genetics before, but it has a couple of wonders attached, so off we go.

1630 AD -- The Internet comes in, pushing Aabraxa to 130 culture per turn. The Apollo Program is next, rushed with an MGL and due in 1.

I take a look at my trades with Germany. They're down to one city, paying me 7 gpt with 3 turns left on the deal, and I'm not exporting anything to them. It's time to wipe them out.

I send in one MA, and discover that a king unit is Munich's only defender. By the time I got the screenshot, he was already flat on his back.

And with that, the Germans are gone.

1635 -- Russia and Persia sign a peace treaty. Darn.

The Apollo Program is completed, sending Aabraxa to 132 cpt. I start an off-shore platform.

Russia, Sumeria and Greece all send troops into my territory. What, precisely, makes them think that I'm ok with this??? I guess the irony is that I really don't want WW again. However, I have regained luxes from both the Greeks and Russians. That gets me to thinkin'. I think Greece is selling Gems to Sumeria. I'd like some gems. That means that I need to stop that trade. Ever so slowly, a plan forms:

1) Make MPP with Greece.
2) Give sumerians the boot order, and hope they declare.

Here we go:

And then I give the Sumerians the boot order:

Oops. I thought they'd DOW me. Darn.

In 1640, my Domestic Advisor has a brainstorm!

Really? Now you think of this? And why does the IW always seem to be possible only in towns that will require 350 turns to build it?!?

In 1650, I grow weary of having furriners on my soil and I give everyone the boot. To my surprise, nobody declares on me.

As an aside, the Little Aabraxan is itching to start another multiplayer game. She was asking when I'll be done, and I told her that my projected win date is currently 1705 AD. She was asking how I could project my win date and I told her that I was going to win by culture. Her response: "Who are you?!?"

1675 -- I've been giving everyone the boot order every turn for a while now. It finally pays off, though not in the way I'd planned.

After sending wave after wave of Modern Armor at Pharsalos, I spot a king unit!

And then I proceed to Thermopylae, where I find another.

1675 AD -- My lone source of uranium depleted, but I got a new source of oil.

Fortunately, Xerx will trade me uranium, ironclads, 2K in gold, and 39 gpt for genetics. . . . Now that I think about it, though, I really don't need the uranium. I do, however, want to deny it to anyone else.

1685 -- Thermopylae flips back to the Greeks. And because I'm playing in the dark at 5 am, in a moment of weakness, I fail to watch the active unit, and accidentally pillage a tile at Aabraxa! :gripe::gripe::gripe:

1690 -- I reclaim Thermopylae. I also capture Athens, which contained a Greek King, JS Bach's, and 3 Greek arty. I've seen more AI arty in this game than I've seen in a long time.

Just for giggles, I rush a couple of tac nukes. Is there a diplo penalty for nuking someone? What about for nuking everyone?

The Greeks also land one of those typical AI invasions.

You can't see it from the pic, but they've invaded right next to my capital, 3 or 4 elite tanks, a few Modern Armor units, and I've got arty on rails. This isn't going to go well for them.

As of 1695 AD, Aabraxa has 19,852 culture. I think I'll go cash rush some tac nukes. I turn off research, leaving only one lone scientist at Spoon Woods. All other specialists become tax collectors. I'm going to need gold. I have a hunch that when I send off these nukes, I'm going to lose lots of my trade deals. Which means that lux spending will have to go up for the last turn.

I enter the 18th century. Aabraxa is very close to topping 20K, and here it is.

After a great deal of contemplation, I have come to a conclusion. I could finish this game as it started, by playing nice. I think I did pretty well in not DOWing anyone, but I don't want to play nice any more! :mwaha::ar15::ar15::ar15:

The Persians DOW me, and I begin a one-turn rampage across the landscape.

I also invade Ur, that city being the most Wonder-laden of the Sumerian empire.

By the end of 1700 AD, Sparta, Corinth, Ur and Seoul are mine. Umma and one other decent Sumerian city have been burned to the ground.

I lose Ur and some other city on the IBT, but it doesn't make any difference. I am

OSMAN THE MAGNIFICENT!

The only question remaining: What's next?

It looks like a fitting cultural victory ending for Aabraxan Plays Nice! Congratulations!

I suppose you could send your unstoppable armies over the rest of the world, or you could play multiplayer with Little Aabraxan and start a new story about that game.

Thank you.

I have seriously considered writing up one of the multiplayer games with my daughter and myself. She's 8, and at least as bloodthirsty as I am. We started one today, and she wants to play cooperatively to beat up the AI and win by conquest. You know, sort of a "Family that slays together stays together" sort of thing.

Great job, Aabraxan! The next story could be "No more Mr. Nice Guy", in which we see just how good a war-monger you are. The challenge: win a domination or conquest by 1000 AD.

Thank you, Overseer.

I like this idea! I have a couple of ideas for the next game (Little Aabra and myself in multiplayer, or another DG game), but I really like the idea of a 1000 AD dom/conq challenge. You have any ideas for settings or civ that you'd care to share?

Pangaea would be easiest, Continents might be too hard. 60% water makes for lots of land to cover. For sadistic purposes, Portugal on a 60% water Pangaea might be fun. Another idea might be the Mongols on an Archipelago with 80% water. Nicer would be Russia or the Ottomans. The Arabs or China would be among the easier choices, too.

Thanks for another fun read, Aabraxan. I'll be watching for your game with little Miss Aabraxan. :goodjob:
