Try to chop that forest next to Vandal while it is still under our control.
The axeman to the far north got 5XP so promote it to cover and use it to take barb cities.
Our capital has so many good tiles and so much food that it's bound to run into health issues in the long run. I think we should save at least 2 forests. The two non-river ones come to mind (one plains and one grass). They're probably the last two tiles to be worked.
I will be able to play the game today or tomorrow.
Just something I remembered regarding our old discussion of cuirassiers vs. cataphracts.
There is one important difference - cuirassiers ignore walls and castles as far as I remember. Against an opponent who is not on hills and not protective, they maybe much more effective because you won't need siege. A few flanking cuirassiers for the though defenders and the rest will have higher than 60% winning odds.
With cataphracts we will need siege.
Given Izzy has some cities on hills, it might be a good idea anyway.

Right! In that case cuirassiers are definitely better. I love flanking on my cuirassiers too.
Either way, in our situation I still prefer the UU+siege approach. I imagine we will want to go for some major war in the renaissance without bonus buildings so we don't have to be as speedy with the hit and run and aim for the fastest recovery. We'll probably do some drafting as well so a longer war with with siege (on several opponents) won't hurt.
Also, we will be able to lightbulb the cannon path so it shouldn't take that long
The thing that I find surprising is that experienced immortal players look at our current position and instead of panicking (like I do) talk confidently about cuirassier rushes and lightbulbing steel.
I am thinking of delaying the temple in the capital and switch to barracks. We only need the temple when we are 3 turns away from size 11.
We might also want to delay growing to that size by building another worker. Once mathematics is done we want massive chopping in the capital and in Thessa to get some swordmen out.
In 8 turns we get a GS and then we can go back to slavery to whip some more workers or army.

Sounds good -- play at will. I think I started on the temple before we had all the recent happiness additions. We *could* also 2-pop whip one swordsman to speed things up. Whipping a capital of that size is pretty wasteful generally speaking, but in our case getting the swordsmen going those 2-3 turns earlier could be big. We don't have an academy and library there anyway. There's so much food that Constantinople will regrow quickly.
Yeah I know. I was thinking after switching back. I definitely agree with staying in CS until that GS has spawned. It might not take more than 7 turns with micro-management. I think we'll end up with 96 GPP the turn before we spawn it at the current rate, but we have 1 food in the basket and another the next turn so if we don't work the grassland hill 2 turns and run another scientist instead I think we can go to slavery 1 turn sooner.
I agree with whipping after 7 or 8 turns.
I will gift monarchy to Charles immediately to get him pleased. We already hit the 8 tiles of close border and there is a high chance of him entering into WHEOOHRN in the next few turns.
Turn 99
Gifting Monarchy to Charlemagne - this gets him pleased. We are safe for now.
Pray to the RNG gods to let us win at 23% and...
Spoiler:
We lost the barbarian city The gods will pay. We will show them.
Shifted the capital to build barracks and moved the workers to pre-chop forests.
turned research to 100%.
Turn 100
Capital steals a cottage from Thessa, Thessa works 4 scientist with starvation.
Nicea: barracks->lighthouse
I request 40 gold from Ramesses and he agrees.
Turn 101 Nothing special
IBT Judaism spreads to Antioch
Turn 102 We have iron
Charlie has currency but he won't trade it yet.
I request 50 gold and he agrees. What a nice guy.
Some MM details:
I queue a swordman before the barracks, because we will have math next turn and I want the chop to enjoy the 25% org religion bonus.
Turn 106
bulb philosophy, found taoism.
Revolt to monarchy+slavery.
No one will trade anything yet.
Turn 108
Finally there is a chance to trade.
Tech status:
We get an unfortunate event:
Spoiler:
I refuse requests from Isabella to join war against Asoka to declare (or maybe cancel trade) with Izzy.
Turn 109-110 Getting ready for taking the barbs with more swords
IBT:
I have been thinking for a while abou this one:
I decided to refuse because Asoka is Charlie's worst enemy. Charlie drops to cautious and we are at risk again. He has a LOT of units.
We should check his WHEOOH status EVERY TURN until he is pleased again (when religion bonus improves).
If he gets into WHEOOH while cautious - assume it's us.
If he gets there while pleased - we're safe.
Note that the current peace treaty doesn't matter, and it also doesn't matter if he becomes pleased AFTER WHEOOH. I am sure you all know this already, just wanted to make sure we are all on the same page.
Turn 111
Thanks to charlie's suicide chariots we manage to capture Saxon with 2 axemen only We gain 2 workers too.
Suggestion to continue: send workers to build roads to the cities close to charlie. With stone and cheap walls we should be able to hold his forces if he chooses to attack us. We will need to whip a lot of units if he gets to WHEOOH so we need those cities to have better tiles.
Another observation:
Izzy has researched literature and is hopefully going to build GLib and maybe also AP. This will fit perfectly to our plans to conquer her around guilds time.
WK is willing to give us feudalism for philosophy and some gold. I'm tempted to take it, but still undecided.
pros:
- it will decrease the cost of civil service
- it allows longbowmen to defend against Charlemagne
- we are spiritual so we can make use of vassalage until bureaucracy is available (CG2/G2 longbowmen and we're paying for units atm)
con (big):
- by letting WK in on the tech it might get shared with others as well (WK is lacking MC and construction and Ramesses is friendly towards him. If we hold on to the tech we're (almost) guaranteed to get a lot out of it (MC/machinery/feudalism). The former techs might be obtainable with CS *even if* WK starts sharing philosophy though.
Seeing as Charlemagne is cautious those promoted longbowmen are very tempting. In short trading for feudalism decreases military risk but adds technology risk.
Don't start on the monument in Nicomedia -- useless. If we want culture a temple is much better.
Our capital will need an aqueduct soon.
One of our axes has 9XP. If possible it would be nice to get it to 10 (unlocks HE). It's a long walk to that barbarian city though.
Will look more at the save later, but we should be careful not getting too much military -- it's expensive both in hammers and upkeep.
charlie will be pleased in a 5-10 turns... ok, it doesn't have the lowest war prob. at cautious, but doesn't have it very high either. Imho you're rather safe. I wouldn't give away philo... and frankly, I wouldn't waste hammers on units either. On the other hand, izzy might get ideas after she'll be done wasting time with asoka.
charlie gets to friendly with ob/religion/years of resource/years of peace; you get -1 from refusing to help but that should be forgotten by the time the full religion + kicks in, -2 prolly from close borders, but if you throw him a bone, he should be friendly. Same for ramses with or. WK with caste too.
The risk with charlie exists, but it is not big, I agree. I haven't calculated but my guess is that there is a higher than 90% chance that he doesn't decide to declare on us until he gets pleased (a few turns)
I am inclined to keep philosophy because the technology risk seems more real.
I agree we don't need that many units now. Some of the queued swords were there because I didn't know we would be able to take Saxon with only 2 axes.
We could try to move the 9xp axe down, but we need to watch the barb city surroundings every turn to make sure that no one else takes it.
I am not sure it's worth it because if we wait too much this city will face a lot of culture pressure from Ramesses.
We can Whip aquaduct in the capital and stop the fish trade - with monarchy health is more important than hapiness, plus we can build another temple in the capital.
I would switch to caste/pacifism as soon as we can.
We really need to hire some artists in the cities bordering Charlie. Without monasteries it's going to be a hard cultural fight, so we better get to 100 culture first.
Regarding monument - I agree. Didn't think of this when I did it.
Also, we should build/whip some jewish missionaries for our non-jewish cities. We need every bit of culture we can get, and 25% bonus is nice too.
So the plan is to get some GS and bulb paper/education, right?
Normally I don't bulb paper, but in this game our research will be lower than usual, and also we are not planning to bulb liberalism, we will want to trade for feudalism, machinery, guilds and banking before liberalism, so that we can take economics.
We will probably also want horseback riding at some point to whip many horse archers that we could upgrade with the free GM from economics.
Then we can take Madird which will have the forbidden academy, hopefully some settled GS/GP and the pyramids. First we take Madrid, then we take world
Guided by the beauty of our weapons?
*scans map for Berlin*

Yes to pacifism/caste -- that's our main research this game. I, too, want to lightbulb paper here. Our research is no good so we want to lightbulb what we can and it decreases the risk of losing the UoS (and gets it going some turns faster).
I agree with health being the main thing here so I think we should trade for the wheat (can't remember who's got it). Wheat will give +2 and is the missing granary resource. I'd even give away our gems for it if we have to. In a couple of turns we'll have sheep so it doesn't have to happen now (although the wheat might not be available later).
I am happy to announce that I have successfully "recruited" Dirk to our team.
If no one else minds, I suggest giving him the next spot so he has a chance to get into the game.
Ungy, is this ok with you?
BTW, I am not sure when ungy is expected to be back. If he is still away and everyone else is ok with Dirk joining I think we can have him play the next set.
