Has anyone noticed different types of starting locations based on the chosen civ? I had a habit of playing every game as the Romans, and maybe it was a coincidence, but usually by the time I got to Iron Working I was somewhere near an Iron deposit. Sometimes I had to restart ten or fifteen times to get a good starting location where I could expand faster. IE: it starts me right in the middle of the plains with no food resources. If I had waited, I'm sure the surrounding hills and mountains would have had Iron.
Recently I switched to the Russians. I've played three games as them, and only had to restart once. Each time I had an extremely fortunate starting location. The last game I started on turn one with two wheat resources, with one more at first expansion (ten turns) along with two cows with a few hills around as well. It seems that every time I start the Russians I get something like this.
Not only that, but as I explored, I found numerous future city sights where there were at least two food resources.
Another difference is that I really had to search for the Iron deposits. As the romans, I usually already had a city where the Iron was within the radius by the time I discovered the tech. With the Russians, I have to find the resource far from home and build a city there.
Can anyone else show examples of starting locations that are beneficial towards the civ's abilities?
