Hikaro,
You have my heart felt sympathy. I went all out in the last tech icon challenge and would have done the same if I had time this time. I was no where near the top.

I am very proud of the way this particular unit turned out. I like the model, textures, props, animations and yes the sounds. But, I am completely surprised to be in 2nd. Admittedly it is a very distant 2nd. But given he is a Greenskin, cool!

Like you, I also poured my all into this months unit trying to get every little detail just right. Naturally I could not reuse anything. I nearly missed the contest because of the amount of time it took me to get the sounds just right and then to get them to them sync with the animations. I worked feverishly to get it done, not because the competition was important to me. But, because I had promised to have it ready in time. I had expected to have to wrestle Aaglo for the cellar spot this time. Because no matter how hard I worked on it. No matter how detailed the animations, how long I fiddled with the textures and props... it was still gonna be a green dude in a contest where pink dudes always win. But, my thinking was this. I expected my unit to be compared to Aaglo's, and I wanted to try and match his flawless units as closely as I could. And I figured that competing with Aaglo, even if it is for last place, still has my unit and his discussed in the same breath. Which is, to me at least, quite a compliment.
My schedule, like yours, is often very time compressed. Different things, but stilll busy is busy.

I spent alot of hours on this unit expecting to lose (and it seems I was right).
I had been hoping my Zepplin ICON would do well, it did not. I would have entered another with no better chance to win if only I had 3 more days to get one done.
I spent a goofy amount of time getting the "so what" title screen the way I liked it. I knew it would lose the PCX challenge, and yup it did.
I appreciate the support (when I get it), and yes it is very encouraging and stuff. But, I create to create. I make art for arts sake. I admitt I am not some mad-skillz artist. I doubt I will ever achieve that. But, that is not why I do it. Similarly, I entered 3 contests last month and one this month with only hopes that one of them would do ok (and that particular one bombed).
I apprecate your units. I like your flair and style. I think your units are good and belong in the competition. I suspect you would do better with the standard winning base model. A human male instead of a female elf.
But, I think you need to be true to your vision. To Aaglo making the units he likes (green scary dudes) is more important than winning. If you want to win, you should probably look at the last 3-4 winners and you will see the pattern I spoke of. But amongst those units (human males) there is no way to guess which one will take the top. For example, I was 100% certain it would be Navydawg on top this month.

Hikaro - If Cam hadn't entered this month then I would have gone for either your marine or the bedouin. One day made all the difference.

There is a tendency to vote for what you can see yourself using in the future. I definately think that the Warhammer mod development team have dominated the vote this month.

I'm for fantasy, as usual (and that's why my picks always lose... snif...)
So, I'm with the Troll! And not only that, but I'll also use him in the Midgard mod upgrade.

BTW, I'm suprised that Aaglo is stuck last placed; his unit is flawless, as always. A shame...

Bjorn, you forgot one other type that tends to, if not win, at least get a lot of votes (and it will be this type that I enter next month, providing I get any units done at alll, since I'll be taking a much-needed break from unit making after I get the last fixes done and uploaded for my Elven unit pack.... I'll be doing LH in the meantime).:

The Big Horking Mechanized units. I'm planning on doing an Al Bhed robot machina pack when I re-start unit making, and either (a) finishing up the Ork Gargant (b) doing my Rufus Shinra king unit or (c) Finishing up Captain Jack Sparrow.

I guarantee that if Captain Jack Sparrow doesn't win, then I'll definitely throw in the towel.... ALthough I'm pretty sure I can bet on Goldflash and the other PotC fans' votes for that one.....

I also have noticed what you and Plotinus said about Orks, Orcs, gobbos and other greenskins doing rather poorly.... I guess Kermit the Frog was right when he said "It's not easy being green."

Wow, I'm not sure what's more surprising, that this thing's on page 3 in the first day, or that I was the first to "Vote aaglo".

Of course, as has been discussed, this was very close, especially considering the last-minute entry, entries, which funny enough are taking the lead (do I sense evidence for procrastination supporters?:hmm:)

Oh, and yes I realize this is my first month without an entry...:(

Hmm, tough one.

I like Wyrm's Nautilus the best though.

Excellent selection this month!

I just had to vote for Empire Swordy - altough it has a bit too over-confident pose and the "paperdoll-silly-15-frame-run-animation". But I think it's the best unit in this round.

heh, no more "zero poäng" for me :smug:

Well, seeing how aaglo is half of that development team, we sure must have made a concentrated effort to reward our own... ;)
I on the other hand think that Cam's swordsman has got so many votes because it appeals to both fantasy nuts and people who like ancient/medieval human units.

I tend to reward units I'm likely to use, but that's not the only thing affecting my vote, the Coolness Factor is as big, at least.

But then, I tend to think that fantasy units are Cool, while modern units are kinda Meh, so my vote tend to go to pre gunpowder and fantasy units. :)

Taste is in the eye of the beholder, or something like that. ;)

But everyone knows that Aaglo creates loads of top quality units with seemingly no effort at all ;) so we don't need to vote for him any more. What I was talking about is the way that Cam's unit was so eagerly anticipated by the WH mod development team (including all the taskmasters and playtesters and groupies and so on that you guys get), and I bet that a load of people saw that it was finished in the WH forum, then flipped straight to the competition forum to vote for it. Nevertheless, I do think that it was the best of a very good selection this month.

I tend to agree with you there, one class of destroyer or fighter tends to look pretty similar to another to me. :crazyeye:

I voted for aaglo too. My personal favorites in this month's competition were the Orc Shaman, Troll and Bedouin, and in the end the Shaman edged out the other two.

And thank you to everyone who voted for the Swordsman. I almost held onto him for another day to enter him into next month's competition because this month's entries were so good, but then I figured next month will probably be just as competitive, so now was as good a time as any to toss him in the ring. I didn't think he'd do quite as well as he has, so this has been a very pleasant surprise. So thanks again, and congrats to all the other creators on putting out such great units.

I sure hope this isn't happening. It belittles both how good Aaglo's units are and it reduces the significance of the other winners.
I would like to think that the voters are trying to pick the best unit every month and nothing more. I understand from seeing very good Aaglo units do poorly in this contests that greenskins do not typically do well... that is one thing. But to say that you don't vote for a guy becuse he is so consistently good is just wrong.

Agreed! Even the best need pick-me-ups, winning Unit of the Month definately counts as one!

Being the other POV Ray unit maker, I've got a good idea of what he goes through making these things, though I still think aaglo's got some POV Ray tricks up his sleeve that I haven't yet fathomed.:crazyeye:
And honestly, these competitions haven't been going for a full year yet, I think the most trophies a single unit maker has collected is 2 (and that ain't me, OR aaglo), we haven't had the time to develop any 'eilitism' here, so it's harmful to start fighting it already. Let him have his day before you start saving it for the other guys. This is why I have no issue voting aaglo when the unit deserves it.

Sorry, not really trying to rant, commenting! Honest!;)

This is a very hard call this month. I'll probably wait a few days to vote, but Troll, Zombie, and Shaman are what I'm leaning towards. Despite my unit making proclivities, I like fantasy stuff quite a bit and have an ambitious WIP fantasy mod that I'll never finish, but it's fun to play. I have been making modern GP units, because I thought that was an area that has been lacking. In any event, great units this month, everyone should be quite pleased with their creations.

'Eres anuvver vote fer de Orcs!

how interesting.... What a huge momentum shift that took place while I was sleeping.
The troll has nearly closed with the Swordsman, I never thought that would happen (thanks for all the support guys)
But, the big shocker has to be Navydawg's Bedouin. The surprise is not that its getting alot of votes, it deserves them, but that the later voters have really jumped on this unit. I'd have to say the momentum seems to have shifted to this unit now.
I guess it is time to let the troll break out his secret weapon. That's right, I'm giving him permission to eat the other contestants.:p

@ Bjornlo / Orthanc - I hope that my comments were not taken too seriously, I'm just stirring it up a bit here. ;) Aaglo does seem to create an amazing amount of excellent units, but I did honestly think that Cam's was better this month. Aaglo certainly deserves huge praise for being a stalwart of the civ3 scene - certainly since I started posting here. I would never decide not to vote for Aaglo's units just because he's so good. If I did that then I wouldn't be able to vote for any of the entries this month. :D

As for the vote being subject to elitism - well I don't believe that it is, I was just trying to explain why Cam's swordsman had such a rush of votes to begin with that fell away a bit later.

The troll does seem to have almost caught up now though. If I had known that it had an 'eat other contestant' animation I would have voted for it.

Ok, fair enough...
Hmm.... troll eating his foes anim... suddenly I wonder if I should make another disgusting alternate victory animation. Hmmm.... have to think about that one. Would be funny, but would be a boooger to animate.
