Hikaro,
You have my heart felt sympathy. I went all out in the last tech icon challenge and would have done the same if I had time this time. I was no where near the top.
I am very proud of the way this particular unit turned out. I like the model, textures, props, animations and yes the sounds. But, I am completely surprised to be in 2nd. Admittedly it is a very distant 2nd. But given he is a Greenskin, cool!
Like you, I also poured my all into this months unit trying to get every little detail just right. Naturally I could not reuse anything. I nearly missed the contest because of the amount of time it took me to get the sounds just right and then to get them to them sync with the animations. I worked feverishly to get it done, not because the competition was important to me. But, because I had promised to have it ready in time. I had expected to have to wrestle Aaglo for the cellar spot this time. Because no matter how hard I worked on it. No matter how detailed the animations, how long I fiddled with the textures and props... it was still gonna be a green dude in a contest where pink dudes always win. But, my thinking was this. I expected my unit to be compared to Aaglo's, and I wanted to try and match his flawless units as closely as I could. And I figured that competing with Aaglo, even if it is for last place, still has my unit and his discussed in the same breath. Which is, to me at least, quite a compliment.
My schedule, like yours, is often very time compressed. Different things, but stilll busy is busy.
I spent alot of hours on this unit expecting to lose (and it seems I was right).
I had been hoping my Zepplin ICON would do well, it did not. I would have entered another with no better chance to win if only I had 3 more days to get one done.
I spent a goofy amount of time getting the "so what" title screen the way I liked it. I knew it would lose the PCX challenge, and yup it did.
I appreciate the support (when I get it), and yes it is very encouraging and stuff. But, I create to create. I make art for arts sake. I admitt I am not some mad-skillz artist. I doubt I will ever achieve that. But, that is not why I do it. Similarly, I entered 3 contests last month and one this month with only hopes that one of them would do ok (and that particular one bombed).
I apprecate your units. I like your flair and style. I think your units are good and belong in the competition. I suspect you would do better with the standard winning base model. A human male instead of a female elf.
But, I think you need to be true to your vision. To Aaglo making the units he likes (green scary dudes) is more important than winning. If you want to win, you should probably look at the last 3-4 winners and you will see the pattern I spoke of. But amongst those units (human males) there is no way to guess which one will take the top. For example, I was 100% certain it would be Navydawg on top this month.
