I wonder if anyone is interested making the DD-21 Destroyer which is currently being developed for the US navy.

It looks really cool, as the pictures show:

Freakin Cool!!!
This baby looks like a 21st century Monitor! Good find there Sqrig :goodjob:

It's going to be an "ironclad" packing a huge amount of firepower! Having between 128 and 256 VLS cells means that it could theoretically have upto a hundred of Tomahawk missiles!

In Civ3 terms, I guess that could amount to 6 tiles bombardment with blitz.

Hmmmm...Would make a good unit for future/near future scenarios, for an advanced naval unit - theres a real lack of those.

As for the actual ship, I think It's kinda ugly.
Being flat in the water is interesting, clever perhaps, but with such a wide deck, and most anti-ship missles being able to launch/ come in at a steep angle, wouldnt that not do a great deal for it??

But then again, with all this effort being made to disguise a bloody great ship, why dont they save the money and buy better submarines?

Wouldn't a stealth submarine be , well, stealthier than a great big destroyer?
If a boats supposed to be stealthed to the max, whats the point of it being a ship? Aren't Naval vessels supposed to be imposing symbols of Power, to show the enemy who's boss
If the sub was big enough, couldn't It carry all those missles any way?
Yes, I think it could even be feasible to have helicopter bays inside, if It was big enough.
If anyone was worried about it not being manouevable enough, or too easy to shoot, Isnt anything bigger than a rowing boat easy to shoot these days?

A ship can be shot from the air, the ground (if its close enough), underwater, over water, It can even sink by adverse weather conditions. What do you think Happens if a Flat ship gets hit by a really big wave? Its either going to be tipped over or be crushed by the force of the thing.

A sub on the other hand, Can only be shot by nuclear weapons, very expensive missles, Other VERY expensive subs and their expensive torpedos, or A blatently obvious fleet of destroyers..

If you're hiding something, its usually something not designed to be shot at.
I wouldn't want to put my Millions of dollars worth of missles on something that doesn't think it can stand up for itself, and is too big to hide properly

Good points Shizo. However these ships are going to be pretty hard to target using radar-guided missiles.

As for submarines, the US Navy is re-equipping four Ohio-class SSBNs into SSGNs, carrying 154 Tomahawks instead of 24 ballistic missiles. Also such a sub will carry a detachment of Special Forces.

Ahhhh more ships EXCELLENT. Seriously though this ship would kick butt in the game.

Guys, I hate to tell you this, but Sec. Rumsfeld cancelled the DD-21 program in 2001 and replaced it with the DD(X) program. The DD(X) is going to be very similar in some respects, but quite different in many others.

I thought DD(X) is just another name for this program...

Well, I must've been wrong. :( However for Civ3 it doesn't matter what a current defense secretary thinks. :)

Ok then, here's an early sketch of the DD(X) by Northrop-Grumman

Now, this DOES look like a late 19th-c battleship.

Looks really cool :)

I'm wondering if there are any engineers here. Surely a ship of tommorow would have water jets and not be propeller driven? Water jets are already available and double the cruising speed.

I am certainly no expert on the subject but the protruding hump at the front of the hull (as shown on DD-21) creates a wave to counter ussual wave created as the ship moves through the water. This results in smoother and more efficient movement.

For anyone thinking of making similar units, the wave effects should be reduced in size compared to old style battleships and destroyers.

Hope this wasn't a totally useless post :p
