In some ways I find the idea of a trade deficit laughable. No body gives you something for nothing so what is the US exporting? Are we undervaluing the good we produce, or over valuing the junk we import which leads to an "apparent" deficit which is not real, or are we exporting something intangible like "security". Is the world getting good value?

What? Since I don't understand your question, perhaps this isn't relevant. The US imports (goods and services) more than it exports. It buys more than it sells. Since there is money, credit, etc. a trade deficit can exist. The world doesn't barter.

Apparently, we still export some construction equipment and industrial goods. We import tons of consumer goods.

Freedom, peace and democracy, of course!

Don't forgot the depleted uranium, thrown in at no extra charge :)

You miss the meaning of trade deficit, which is not really about trade, but the movement of financial capital required to facilitate that trade. For every dollar you import you have to sned overseas a dollar. For every dollar you export, a dollar gets brought back into the country. Over time if exports are significantly less you will have less capital to spend. Of course it is far more complicated than that simple description.

I'm sufferng a trade deficit, going to have to lock up my credit cards... after Xmass

You need to force the buggers to buy back goods from you.

Right, the main organization agitating for riots (GOLOS) is sponsored by the U.S.

Sorry, I have no more time now, gonna hurry to buy my portion of democracy before it's all sold.
Are they still selling Duma seats?

Not to Germans I'm afraid; that much be a touch too blatant.

That doesn't solve Ama's problem though!

And in the real world GOLOS (vote) is the only independent institute for monitoring elections in Russia.

It would be happy to take funding from the Russian federal government. There's a snag. The Russian federal government doesn't want to pay for an actually independent institute.

Frankly Aleksey, you must be in Putin's pocket already.

Well, it extends credit to the US. You're paying interest, so yes, they are likely getting good value.

We export entertainment. Aerospace parts and complete aircraft. Many kinds of manufactured goods. Many services. And much else. We just import too much oil and consumer goods.
