When your empire grows your upkeep also grows, but how is upkeep calculated? I know the following upkeeps:

1. Military maintenance
2. City maintenance
3. Civics upkeep

The question now is when I build a library does my city upkeep increase like in former civs? Or is city upkeep just depending on size and distance from the palace? If buildings have upkeeps, which buildings are that?

No upkeep on the buildings, just based on the size, noumber of cities, and distance to Palace or feux Palace. Just another way Firaxis emphasizes well-developed cities in CIV. :)

Ah good to hear. I already thought that but I saw somebody making a remark on building maintenance. That threw me of guard. I like this system a lot better then former civs. And I am really starting to love slavery then. Quick buildings and low maintenance costs :D

buildings don't have anything to do with maintenance (other than the reducing effect of courthouses)

eh? I thought I had a fair grasp of the game mechanics, but I hadn't heard of this. It would answer some questions I have had where courthouses didn't "seem" as effective in my builder, expanse game versus my warmonger games.

I'm curious about the math behind this...

Courthouses simply halve the city mainenance cost. If you are a builder-perfectionist, you usually have several cities around your capital, so the distance cost is not that high. Suppose, you have a city with -6 maintenance cost, you build a Couthouse, the maintenance is reduced to -3. You just saved 3 gpt by building a Courthouse.

Now suppose you conquered a city far enough from your capital, and the mainenance is -18 gpt. Build a Courthouse there, reduce the maintenance to -9. You just saved 9 gpt.

Another consideration. A "builder" city typically generates lots of gold from commerce. To say, 20 gpt. If you build a Marketplace instead of Courthouse, you'll make 5 gpt, not 3.

A conquered city should generate at least 40 gpt in order to make a Marketplace preferrable over a Courthouse.

Unlike previous civ games, buildings don't come with a per-turn maintenance attached to them. Each city has a maintenance cost based on the size of the city, the number of cities you have total, and the distance to the closest palace.

I would say its because, conquered citys usually have a lot of money generating buildings destroyed when captured, so the difference when you put a Courthouse there is more noticible.
