Useful Patches for Civ 3 Conquests v1.22

any probable update would include at least the notions of upgrades so far mentioned , just don't rush it , Civ III has still enough to outperform Civ XXXVIII or something .

am seriously for a button that enables airstrikes to be concentrated in one loacation , this must be the fourth time am saying this but it's such a relief when the fighting takes place close to my capital so that ı can press H to use the bombers from all over the map without all that mouse tracking from airbase/city to target .

Perhaps we should concentrate in the future on things that we could do ourselves. For instance, is there anywhere a list of ALL of the things that could be changed by the conqests INI file (including adding KeepRes=1, which everyone will inevitably mention)?
There's certainly one of those. Ainwood (re)posted it here.

FTR, the 'GridOn' switch doesn't seem to work as advertised: I have 'GridOn=1' in my .ini, but I still have to turn it on manually every time after starting the game (IIRC, I tried GridOn=0 as well, but that didn't make any difference).

I tried several years ago; without much success... May be we can try again

Yes, at least the argument with the Canadian Group should not exist any longer. When looking on their website it seems, the Canadian Group is gone.

While I cannot help with coding, I would do what I could in terms of working on unit stats and beta testing anything. I would have to discuss with my wife as to helping with any funding.

I think what we need most is someone who manage to contact the current owner of CivIII and convince them of the interest to transfer to a group of fans the evolution of the game, to make new patches/minor changes/DLC and expand the life span even more.
If we get support / source code, then I'd be more than happy to come back to civ, program the changes, adapt my editor, etc.

But since I failed to achieve that last time, I don't think I should be in the frontline again for the preliminary discussion

I can understand you not wanting to be the point man. Give me some time to think about this, as I was thinking of approaching Firaxis anyway over using Civ3 for educational purposes.

ı would say one of the things that needs to change is the use of SHIFT to speed up the AI movements , 5 times of it and a window appears to hint that ı can now use something ı can translate only as Sticky buttons .

and pressing F7 gives the wonder screen ? Some option available to show where one can build wonders , great and small and a reminder of what's needed , say goverment or a resource or a number of buildings ...

You can use Caps Lock instead of Shift but you cant control it as easy.

Also you can stop Windows from coming up with the Sticky Key window, you just have to go into the settings and stop it.

thanks for the heads up . Though am a complete computer illiterate , would love it taken care of by the "re-coding" .

CAII will do this for you. Just sayin'...

Although I do agree that it would be better to have this info available directly in-game. That would actually be a useful thing for the Cultural Advisor screen to tell us: 'We can now build [WONDER] in [CITY]' (I literally never look at this screen in-game, except by accident).

Similarly, the Trade Advisor screen could be made (much) more useful as well, e.g. not just telling us which Civs have Resources that they might want to sell to us, but also who might want to buy our excess Resources (which CAII also does -- but the main reason most of us use the app, is because the game 'hides' this info...)

If you manage to get something, count me in to help with programming / editor. I'm afraid I lost much motivation after I reached a dead end with them, but if the situation change, my motivation would probably come back.
Especially since my NTW mod is now closer from the end than the beginning

ı have the Civassist II but being primed to playing the game on an XP PC that refused to play many other games due to card limitations and the like ı stop everything when ı start . Agree on the potential buyers issue in the trade screen as well .

would a map converter for all games would work ? Maybe entrusted to CFC itself so that experienced modders can convert say a Civ1 savegame to a basic map for CivIII , though without the likes of luxuries and resources and make it a playable thing . Never forgetting that Firaxis is a commercial thing as well ?

Hooray @Steph and Timerover51!

I didn't know this was on the works by someone. I really hope u guys do it.

I will be a bit busy for the next 4 weeks with a teaching stint, but after that I will start working on it and see what might be done.

The other is that they're still making enough money from it for it to be worth doing the update. SteamSpy estimates that about 786,000 people own Civ3 on Steam, since its Steam release in late 2006. If we reckon Firaxis gets $2 in revenue per sales after figuring some are on sale for as low as $1.24 and Valve gets a 30% cut, that's a bit under $1.6 million, or about $188K/year. It's probably lower now than in 2006, but even if it's $50K a year, that's still decent money. And venues such as Gamersgate help a bit, too.

So, there are some more recent statistics on this. According to SteamSpy, approximately 23,650 bought Civ3 during the Steam Summer Sale, producing about $29,000 in revenue with the $1.24 sale price. After Valve's cut, that's $20,528.20 for Firaxis. Not bad for two weeks, even if it's likely considerably higher than the average two weeks. It does lead me to believe that the $50K figure I supposed earlier is probably low.

By comparison, Civ5 sold $889K, Beyond Earth $645K, and Civ4 $133K after the 30% cut. Although I suspect those are low, as the prices are based on the base game, not the complete version as Civ3 is. Civ4 is probably closer to $186K after Complete Edition purchases are added in, which can be estimated by new BTS sales. Bottom line though, Civ3's doing okay for a 2001 game, and Civ5 unsurprisingly remains the top seller revenue-wise.

And hopefully, some of those 23,000 will be joining us here on CivFanatics!

Nice to see that ideas are still floating around. and the spirit is not dead. Perhaps once in the future this game get the facelift it deserves.
Sad that Antal was just a flicker in the dark, but it sounded promising.

civ III + will happen , God Willing something before 2040s . Though hopefully that 3 hex X will remain limited to metros , one or two cities per Civ . It still unnerves to see that much area for one city .
