The Great Library does not give a free library.

The AI cannot give gpt even if it's not grayed out.

EDIT: the AI can give gpt when it's not grayed out now, but couldn't before. More to the point, it want' until after t110 that any of 5 AI had gpt available for a tech... and they have yet 120g in their treasuries.

Thal changed the effects of the Great Library.

On an unrelated side note, in v156 I returned the Great Library to the 1-free-tech bonus and increased the cost. The bonus is straightforward, unique, effective, and doesn't limit great person creation to scientists. I realized that my attempts to nerf the GL by reducing its effects resulted in an overly complicated and unoriginal building. It's probably better to just raise the cost.

On another note, while being in an alliance with some civs, whenever I've connected a spare luxury resource, it has immediately been asked for as a request.

Yes, but I didn't think the original GL didn't give a library. If this is the case, then it's pretty expensive for no library and a free tech (which is no better than a GA at this point).

This often happens to me. It's not a bug, just bad luck, but it's an argument to complete the improvement while still on your turn, so you can trade it. (Of course it's hard to trade when other civs have healthy but unavailable gpt.)

I culture bombed a new city of Greece near where a CS had razed a Japanese city earlier. It may have nicked Japanese territory - I'm not sure. Regardless, the Japanese complained, and the Greeks - who lost a cotton resourse - did not.

Maybe only one civ complains?

The Great Library's effect is now what it was when the game originally released, with higher cost (and higher culture due to culture scaling elsewhere). The free library was not added until last summer.

Can't do anything about that culture bomb issue.

Would you (or someone else) mind telling me what its effects are now? It didn't seem worth the added hammers, but then I was fixated on the missing free library.

It gives a free technology, an effect considered overpowered when it existed the first year of civ, so I guessed it's still very powerful today. I increased the cost because for the past two years feedback says the Great Library is the number one early wonder priority. This is probably because it's useful and buildable for all empires... most wonders are useful only in specific situations.

For me a free tech at that stage is like a free GS, except I would normally plant a GS in an Academy. My own sense is that the prior GL was more powerful with the free library, and definitely a better deal at less hammers. I can see boosting the hammer cost of a very popular GW...

Do people feel the current GL is worthwhile at its current price?

I actually think I follow you here Txurce.

Without the free library the wonder isn't really that interesting anymore.

I'd prefer to see something a flat +2 and +0.5/ up to 5 or something: thematically focusing the benefits to the early game and to tall empires seems natural to me. The free library (instant, plus no maintenance) is such a good deal that the actual Science benefits shouldn't have to be awfully large to make it a worthwhile Wonder.

And if you just miss the GL, the gold you get for the effort allows you to buy a library.
