Version 2.8 discussion

I have a quick request for the next (and future) versions of the mod - could you add the version number to the initial display where "Rise of Mankind" comes up on the opening screen? I sometimes change folder names and switch between versions when I'm looking at the latest test or beta version and then get confused when I go to play with my friends and don't realize I forgot to change back - oops! :)

my wishlist: ability to choose the colors of the nations at boot/setup. i just wish sometimes i could choose the colors for example of england and be able to see the borders... or lets say i play a game and two yellow are neighbors, making it difficult to ascertain their borders -- i wish i could change their colors from ones not in use.

just my wishlist... kind of like being able to fly to Helsinki and see my Chicago BlackHawks play hockey?

2.8 wishlist p.s. >> i had once posted the desire to not have the point of view slider always on my screen. someone said you can turn it off but that means not using it. that is not what i wanted. i for one never slide that thing around once i set it therefore i dont see the need to have it always on screen. also i sometimes, whether chasing a ping or an offscreen icon, i accidentally slide the thing into the high 90's. sometimes that high 90s error can fritz the game... do we have to put that view slider on the permanent screen? can we put it in the CTRL ALT O menu? (sometimes i wish i could yank off the science/spy/culture +- adjusters in the upper left as well). i want the POV slider but not anchored to the main screen...

Please, a very pretty, pretty PLEASE:

Integrate all the modmods by Afforess, Vincentz, Generalstaff and Quibing (unit pack, ethnic units) in the version 2.8...

I SO HATE INSTALLING A THOUSAND DIFFERENT ADDITION-MODMODS SEPARATELY, WHICH USUALLY ALSO CONTRADICT EACH OTHER AND THUS CAUSE ME ALMOST TO START SMOKING AGAIN!

Sorry for the caps-strike, just a bit frustrated after fighting with XML and modmod-combining for God knows how long and bitterly... :badcomp:

No other requests/wishes. Keep up the amazing work. I love you all and trust in your superb skills! God bless you all in your efforts! :goodjob:

Natural Gas, while it's very commonly used resource in today's world, I probably won't add it to RoM.

It would be easy to swap out some obsolete resources for more modern ones. Like replace all those obsidian resources directly with natural gas. It would only take maybe 4 lines of python to accomplish this and it could be triggered by something like the 1st one to discover rifles.

I always hate to find obsidian. While it is occasionally helpful, in general it means that something more useful cannot be had because it is there instead. Eventual replacement would assuage my dismay ;)

Oh yeah, and I'd like to repeat my request for some sort of slave trade wonder. "Barbary Coast" could generate free trade caravans or something.

Let's settle this waste of space Communism debate once and for all. Communism is not viable with human beings. For better or worse, we are all greedy, selfish, and self-serving. Thus, communism should be moved to the Tech "Homo-Superior", as "superior"* people might be able to live under a communistic rule.

* This depends on your definition of Superior of course.

Would that it were a waste of space, but we seem to always have those who mistake Communism for some forbidden fruit/unrealized ideal, when in fact it is more dystopian than utopian, even theoretically; the actual practice being so horrendous that few any more dare to advocate it. The rot extends, however, to the theory itself.

It's not just that the bad parts of human nature make Communism nonviable, but also that the good parts make it sub-optimal, to put it mildly. We can, and have, and will, do better. I'd like the game to reflect that reality better than it currently does.

So the United States IS socialist! I thought the corporate mass media and military-industrial complex were such a clumsy fit for a limited-democratic republic. Especially when it has ceased to be either a democracy or a republic. Go figure!

Here's one: "Many, too many are born, and they hang on their branches much too long."
Another gem by Nietzsche:
"The great majority of men have no right to exist."

Not a guy I'd take a lesson from.

The Socialism to which Nietzsche refers is what we would call Communism. A liberal socialism (modern definition) has its own set of problems, but so does any system. Those problems are not nearly as deep seated as those with Communism proper (i.e. no property/democracy/civil rights).

As for Nietzsche himself, he was a free-thinker (literally) and thus prone to bad ideas with the good, or perhaps more accurately, the accurate, as he was in his characterization of Communism that I linked.

You are correct that the corporate mass media and military-industrial complex are a poor fit for a limited-democratic republic. Would be interesting to see that played out in the game as well...

Obsidian resource gets bonuses with hospital... Obsidian is used in Surgical Instruments to this day!

Afforess already made a modmod pack installer, I believe. Not sure where it is but it is in the modmods forum. You can choose what you ant. But it is possibly only good for 2.71 at this point, I suspect. Ask Afforess for more details

I was working on a universal modmod installer back with 2.71, but I got too busy with my other projects and CTD's in RoM to continue it. I will however, work on it again, once 2.8 is released.

I guess no one has noticed, but with my beta versions of my modmods, and in later versions, if you hover over the flag on UI, it tells you what version of RoM you are using, what version of my modmod's, what version of the UP and Better AI.

I d/l'd your 1.4beta5 the other day and I did notice that. I asked zap to do this waaaay back in version 0.94 and in 1.0 but he didn't see the need back then. :(

Zappara never did it because it involves a SDK change. It's rather easy, but... I added it for him anyways.

Cool. :)

Having it on the flag hover is great, but I would like to know when I load the mod right off, the opening screen, because I'm playing MP and want to back out asap to fix it before I make my friends wait... :) Sometimes being blonde isn't all its hyped up to be!

However, thanks for that, it is also useful.

If they are to be included in the game in the name of realism, the flaws in the ideals they express should be accurately reflected as well.

But the flaws aren't money based, unless I'm really missing something. :(

- The internet wonder is too cheap or it should be moved to a later tech. It breaks the game if it's too early. Or its bonus can be moved to another later wonder and it should give tech/commerce bonus or free tech etc. (I'm not a fan of Encyclopedia either).
As I"ve said before, many times, in different mods, if you're using those to give you technology, you're doing it wrong!

Those are designed to be built to stop the AI from building them. You just never use them for their technology gains. It's totally silly.

Let's also not increase the cost of technology too much. I want to go through the tech tree on a normal map before 4004 A.D. :)

I don`t know if this is possible but I would like if you could make your own Union Example: Europe.
That you start your union with few civilizations, joining an Union by votes etcetc. Later other civilizations can join or fight against other Unions. Would be alot of fun I guess.

Personally, I finally found (embarrassingly late) that size of maps does influence the research rate. I modded hem to 100 in worldsize files. I think you might want to consider removing research rates from mapsizes by making them all 100 and find different way to balance it out if necessary. I personally think it is silly to make research harder on larger maps. My opinion, only. I will make a modmod out of it later when 2.8 settles down.

Yeah, that sums it up quite nicely. So IF RevDCM is released on next monday (7days from this week's monday) I could have it merged to RoM next week and hopefully get the first download release ready by the weekend - of course assuming everything goes without huge problems.

On this weekend I'll merge BUG 4.1 to RoM 2.8.

This is exciting news! I am totally stoked for 2.8!

Thanks for all your hard work on this Zap!

more area=more cities=more research=faster teching

make sense?

Depends on how fast you can research. :)
