Version 2.8 discussion

Zappara, we have ways of making you work harder on 2.8...

In the spirit of creating my own holidays (why only celebrate others), the day RoM 2.8 is offically released I will be calling "Rise of Mankind Day".
A day to celebrate RoM, what it means in game and how it relates to real life and to give thanks to zappara and the other RoM contributors.

In the mean time I'll keep going back to my 2.71 game to take the edge off waiting for 2.8.
That said, it's pretty much like using an ibuprofen for a migraine; it helps, but doesn't do nearly enough...

Wow, God Zappara!

Just don't get too attached to the worshipful words :D.
When your release come forward to light the dark corners of gamers' world, be prepared to sue your lightning bolts to squash bugs!

I have never tried to sue lightning bolts. Do they have a poor legal team?

I completed the merge process last night and left the game to run on AI autoplay over night. The game was around 1900AD at the morning and there wasn't any problems. Today after work I'll take a closer look at the logs and if there isn't any new issues I'll get to zip the mod tonight (sorry, no installer version this week, I don't have time to learn/try that stuff now). So tomorrow or on Friday I'll hopefully get it uploaded. Lite version I'll try to get released next week.

This is going to be a very busy weekend for me! RoM and Borderlands! it is a good thing I have two monitors and a quad-core or I might have to not play Borderlands between RoM turns ;-)

I strongly prefer the .zip version myself, 7zip is no more difficult than selecting a folder to unzip into, and clicking extract. This is pretty much what you have to do with the self installer, except you click next. With the .zip version I can look at the directory structure prior to extraction.

Are you planning on making both versions in the future, Zappara?

Indeed. The only situation I find the auto intaller better than a ZIP is for the modmods where you want to download a combo modmod and then choose which you want to install. Thus for RoM you are not choosing things you want to keep out because you want everything (or it would not work :P ) In short ...

RoM Auto-Installer = Unnecessary

Uber ModMod Installer = Critical to Installing Possible Conflicting ModMods.

To celebrate the occasion, I have decided to dump my :cough: dial-up for ADSL.:D

I remember that switch myself. I could finally watch videos online. There was a whole side of the internet I was missing out on.

I meant to say rar instead of zip. I use rar format as it offers better compression rate than zip files and rar also has recovery option (unrar process can pass some errors) while zip doesn't. Most users are unfamiliar with 7z files so I've decided not to use that format (I know it offers better compression than rar).

Great News Zap!!!

And if you're having trouble with the upload, please let us know! My friends and I, for instance, use dropbox to send big files around. Worst-case scenario, if the uploads keep failing on you, we can use dropbox to get the initial version out and then one of us can set up any number of additional options for distribution.

I know that uploading the beta was a frustrating/tiresome process, and that might be one area we can help out with!

Distribution options include:
  • Torrent
  • Someone else to upload to filefront
  • RapidShare

use dropbox

I've used dropbox for about 1 and a half years now, and I must say it quality software. Rarely do I come across such quality stuff, but they are awesome. If you noticed I have distrubuted my betas using dropbox. However, they are better for smaller files, and they have a bandwidth cap for public files. The link would only work for 4-5 downloads before it expired due to it's size.

However, A torrent would be nice, I could seed it for a while.

Lets make RoM-related Versions and Modmodpacks steady torrents. For the logistics we should enable a 'Files'-subforum. For Modmodders there could be other torrents then for the 'masses' of 'normal' RoMers,
who mostly should -of course!- still use the free hosters. For the others a working torrent system would be better as it is de-centralized and lot less possible to fail due to stupid freehosters policies, betas can be handed round lot faster, especially with a RSS-feed.

I would be a steady torrent sharer, anyone with me, who else got a flat?
Come on, after all, it's for the sake of the rise of mankind!
