Version 2.8 discussion

I've used dropbox for about 1 and a half years now, and I must say it quality software. Rarely do I come across such quality stuff, but they are awesome. If you noticed I have distrubuted my betas using dropbox. However, they are better for smaller files, and they have a bandwidth cap for public files. The link would only work for 4-5 downloads before it expired due to it's size.

However, A torrent would be nice, I could seed it for a while.

I'd be happy to download and seed for a while as well!

I think I recall Zap saying he hadn't set up a torrent before -- so either way, we probably need to find a way to help out if his upload won't go through again again (sounded like last time was brutal).

I think it's safe to say just about anyone who will download it and is an active forum poster will seed this.

Except for me, CMU has a 2gb up limit per week, or I lose internet access. I would burn through that seeding, pretty fast.

I actually did manage to, but, I think if I go uploading a ton, like 5-10gb, I'll get red flagged and then get reported...

Man that's another reason why I love living in CA... no internet dl/ul cap and in the metropolitan areas the internet is free and unlimited.

It's been a long time since I've used the torrent method, but I thought you could set upload rates for total and per second limits? This is very likely my imagination.

When I said I'd seed it, I meant temporarily as well. I don't know of any limits on my upload/download amounts, but I suspect that Comcast does throttle users. So I'd make it available to get it out there, but not indefinitely.

I suspect we'll all wind up downloading it from FileAgony or some such place. Finding a single host for the file is easiest for Zappara.

You can set an upload speed, in KB/s, and limit how long, or how much you upload per torrent, with Utorrent.

Hi. dunno if this has already been said before, but i was thinking some future era melee units that have high defence against projectile weapons but weak against some other type of future era unit. This would bring back some cool melee battle action that is lacking once gunpowder hits the scene. So like cool laser swords and plasma axes or wat ever. :) These units would have some mean packing armor that bullets cant really get through, so you have to use other means, like psychic attacks done by units that are...yep you guessed it...really hurt by projectile weapons (rock, paper, scissors anyone) well you get what i mean.

I'm a fan of Star Wars. However, I don't think it is good idea to replicate your exact scenario. Maybe modify it a bit to have melee weapons be a backup weapons for future soldiers?

Only reason lightsabers work in SW universe is because of the Force that guides Jedi Knights/Sith Lords above and beyond the capabilities of non-Force sensitive people.

No i dont mean like star wars. I meant somewhere in time like 80 years from today, we design body armor, for infantry, that is very strong against projectile based weapons. This armor would greatly increase the defense of troops against enemy fire.

To counter this armor, we would then have to create melee weapons strong enough to get past this type of armor as bullets dont work as well anymore. These melee weapons would have to be energised hand weapons of some kind, like cutting lasers or plasma torches that have been weaponised in a way to use in up close combat.

This basically gives us an excuse to bring back the earlier melee units of the game, spear man, axe man and swords man, but futuristic versions.

spearman would be good against axe, axe good vs sword and sword good vs spear, with all 3 future melee units having bonuses against conventional projectile weapons that are in use today. This would mainly lead to guns being a supportive weapon (like archer bombarding) and they would soon be obsolete on the battle field.

Later on into the future, to counter these future melee units and their strong body armor, we would finally develop long range energy weapons (laser guns or wat ever) with the power to burn through the future melee armor. It would be like when gunpowder was first discovered , changing the battlefield yet again.

So it would be the reason we develope longe range energy weapons, instead of it just being an upgrade of present day guns.

@crossclayton

I think it would loose a lot of realism if we did that. Things like SW are just fantasy set in space. Real science fiction would be much cooler and not what you would expect. I mean with all the nano tech and stuff who needs swords or even guns anymore? Its a bit hard to chop a nano swarm in half with a sword or shoot it with a gun. Especially when it could deconstruct your weapon as well as you.

Yes your right. Thats why i. said NOT LIKE SW! And weaponised nanotechnology would not be around yet, that would come further down the tech tree. This type of weaponry is during a period before we have created long range energy weapons of any kind. Like post- post- modern time. Its the old Shield vs Arms Theory. Build better weapns, then the next person builds a better defense, then the first person would build a better offense to counter the new defense.

So, we invent defense against todays bullets(super dense body armor), bullets no longer perform the way they have and are quite useless, you need to get up close with a drill or cutting tool of some kind to get through armor. But you cant be expected to take a cutting laser into battle, so we weaponise them for war. Now we have a better offense to counter the new defense.

Logically the next step in war fare would be to invent a longe range form of attack that can get through the body armor. Thus research goes into creating hand held guns that no longer fire projectiles, but fire intense heat or light or plasma or wat ever strong enough to penetrate the armor from afar.

Its just a small step in the evolution of weaponry. Instead of just jumping straight from
projectiles to laser weaponry, we insert this little step into the tech tree to give more of a reason to invent laser type weapons.

Im not talking about light sabres, or fancy weird looking magical laser swords like in cartoons or movies or sleek looking silver death ray guns or any stuff like that. And yes, then later on down the tech tree it happens all over agian with nano technology and anti nonotech. Shield and Arms.
