The shopkeeper absentmindedly chewed on the coin I gave him, testing its metal content. “A lot of supplies you have there.”
“Yes,” I replied, “I am going in the forest for a mission.”
“The forest, eh? Strange stuff happens in the forest. And that’s not even mentioning that dragon wandering around somewhere in there.”
“It’s fine, my job is dealing with ‘strange stuff.’ Some hunters requested my presence. I heard there’s a hunting lodge somewhere nearby. I’m going there to get the details of the mission.”
The shopkeeper suddenly looked worried. “Oh my, haven’t you heard? The members of that lodge were wiped out during the battle.”
“Oh.” That’s all I could think of to say as I automatically picked up my purchases and walked out of the store. Having your employers all die before you got paid generally wasn’t how you made enough money to survive. But there wasn’t really anything I could do about it. I had already made the trip from the capital specifically for this mission. I might as well go to the lodge, perhaps some old codger survived, preferably some old codger who knew where the hunters kept the reward they had promised me.
Of course, this could just be me being stubborn and refusing to give up, but as Master Ren said, “Sometimes stubbornness is the greatest virtue.” He also said “And sometimes it kills you,” but I preferred not to think about that.
