Woah, i didn't expect to be right!
I tried it a couple of month ago, but didn't get into it. Maybe you need to have played those oldies when they came out, in order to be able to enjoy them now.

This is a trade game i used to play till death. Its only downside was the godawful combat system:

You should give it another try. It's a great game. Quite simple actually, don't let the ugly UI intimidate. Trading system is close to colonization (throw stuff to boat & unload it somewhere else for a tidy profit). Once you get few ships&caravans hauling stuff, you're hooked. Once you get started with the trading you'll have plenty of time to get acquinted with other stuff.

I might just do that, if the urge to play trade games comes back. The thing that put me down was that i couldn't find my way around the UI and the lack of a tutorial.

No it's neither of those. I'm having trouble finding it on the web myself, maybe it never was shipped outside Germany!
Here are some hints, in case anybody feels like googling:
1. The game is named after an influential famiy of bankers from Augsburg.
2. The game came out in 1996
3. It was developed by 4head studios and published by sunflowers.
(I think it was 4head studios' first title)

Since i am not sure if the game even was available outside Germany, i'll just post the answer in spoiler tags.
Spoiler Answer :

Die Fugger 2

You are right, Ciceronian! Shows that you not only know about world history, but also about gaming history. ;)
Feel free to take over.

Thanks Yom... errr I mean Till! And although I know quite a couple of computer games, my answer was based on the hint about the Augsburg trading family, and that could only have been the Fuggers!
Anyway, hadn't really noticed this thread before, but it seems like a great idea! Since it seems to be standard practice to post a screenshot and ask about the game, I shall follow suit. This game might not be too well known, but I expect that someone will recognise it fairly quickly:

Ah now i know the game! I remember hearing about it, but decided against getting it for one reason or another. The name still escapes me, though. Maybe somebody remembers it, without focing me to ask google again? ;)

Was it camelot? Legend of camelot or something? I think i'll have to sleep over it. ;)
How is the game series, by the way?
