What a great first post Jonny_Drama, immediately getting the right answer. There were many editions of the Oregon Trail, this being, I believe, the earliest. I played a later edition, which was apparently produced in 1993. It may well have been the first non freeware game I ever played, and it was famed in the USA as a great educational game.

That is for sure. This was one of the few games we were allowed to play in the school library which is where I remember it from.
