From watching the first two seasons I thought it was pretty decent in that respect other than the beginning where they make it out that even nobles and kings in scandinavia had no idea britain even existed which was pretty silly. Also the geography is way off. Other than that I thought they did a pretty good job of actually sticking to the stories of Ragnar Lodbrok of myths, with a few added details and characters to "distill" the larger narrative of the Viking Age into the story.
Their interpretation of Norse religious practises seem a bit weird, but I suppose its not easy to try to paint a full picture of something that was so varied in different places and time periods as well as relatively unknown in its precise details.
It's not like you really could have a show about this time and be 100% historically accurate. Let alone one about a legendary figure most likely an amalgamation of several different people, the only thing really known about him is that his death seems to have resulted in the formation and subsequent decade of rampaging England of the Great Heathen Army, supposedly to avenge him.
