VQ Series Discussion thread

Thanks for the info there Conroe... I know I've seen captured holy cities producing no culture... but that's because I've been in some other religion.

It's too bad religion throws a wrench in the whole "no culture" thing...

I guess we could play the variant as I suggested, but we do what we can to prevent religion from spreading to our lands, and I would say that we would have to raze any holy cities what we capture...

You just need to start on a continent by yourself, with NO coastal access to the other continent(s). You won't be on the trade network until Astronomy is researched. By then, you will be running Theocracy.

My guess is that the Custom Continents map script will be your best bet. But, you would still need someone to go into world builder and make sure that there is no coastal access.

I would guess that you would need to raze any city with a religion.

So this is becoming not only "no culture" but rather "cultureless pagans"?

Sounds interesting :groucho:.

I'm interested, but I'll need to see how things go time-wise (I might be OOP for a week or so, I'll know by Wednesday night.) :)

How about this as a starting plan:

1. Found Polytheism. Convert.
2. Found Judaism before founding 2nd city. Don't convert, but revolt to OR and build a jewish missionary.
3. Send jewish missionary along with settler (and all subsequent settlers.)
4. Use first GP to found Christianity for Theocracy, second for a jewish shrine. Spread Judaism far and wide while keeping state religion Hindu. Raze any cities Hinduism spreads too.

I think that's the easiest way to get it to work :) And it's kind of fun to think about - a nation of Jews with an elite, ruling, Hindu theocracy. However, you'll need a civ with Mysticism at the start.

Oh wait, you'll never get any GP's unless we capture Stonehenge/Oracle/etc, or you waive the culture requirement to allow building of culture buildings in the capitol only... :crazyeye: So scratch most of 4. ;)

Also, as Cosmichail had suggested a while back, how about an "arid" or "cold" map? Arid & fractal, maybe? You're less dependent on (overall) good land than the AI, so it's a little boost, and makes things interesting.

Hmm - how about Saladin/Cold/Fractal? I think that'd be fun :)

@armstrong (and the rest of the team, too):
Depending on the level you pick ... I don't see the need to start with mysticism. On prince I did manage to found all three early religions without mysticism.

 Why is there talk of founding religions when the goal is to minimize culture?

3) We can not found any religion, and must try to do all we can to avoid the spread of religion to our lands. No open borders with a civ that has religion (until Theocracy) and once Theocracy is available, we must revolt to it and stay in it to prevent any culture-producing religions from spreading to our lands. Note: We have to wait for someone else to learn Theology, as it will found Christianity when discovered.

@ChrTh:

Founding two early religions in the capital will boost it by 10 cpt. But when converting to the first immediatly it'll stay at 5 cpt. When spreading religion #2 - the non-state-religion - to every new founded city they will all have a religion. This will protect these cities against picking up any other religion and will leave them with 0 cpt. So it is a total "cost" of 5 cpt in the capital.

Given that all the cities pick up religion themselves it will yield 1 cpt in every "religious" city as long as we don't convert to any state religion. From there on it will be - at least - possible that the AI that has founded that very religion will send missionairies to spread it. And for every city with that religion we'll gain 1 cpt. So ... to even out the 5 cpt of founding a religion in the capital we'll need to have up to 5 cities with a religion gaining 1 cpt. Certainly this is all rather random, imho (:worship: the RNGod). Hence the idea of having no culture hasn't been reached (given that I got what Maquis meant).

Well, the 5 cpt will be huge in one city - the capital. But this is already producing culture (due to the palace). So in my eyes the idea of gaining no culture will be done less harm with founding two religions! Although I have to admit that it'd then rather be "no culture - except for the capital".

Now, know that's just my two :commerce:.

Alternativly, you can found a religion or capture the holy city of a religion you don't have anywhere else in your empire... and then starve that city to the ground (basically ignore it). Switch to that religion as your "state religion" thus preventing captured cities from creating any culture.

You know, if you do decide to pursue this variant and all.

Well, I am starting to wonder if I'll persue it. No one has confirmed a signup, it just sounds like there's a lot of interest to lurk....

me lurker too....just too much on the go. You never know though Maquis, Greyfox put out Prime Directive and the thread almost died and then all of a sudden it went gang busters. Fremen warriors with no culture, bet's you there are a lot of Frank Herbert fans out there since in Prime Directive it was amazing how many like Sci fi. Maybe even the Harkonnen who would detest culture and brutal warriors. Just an idea. I think if you have something to draw on that's popular it will spark interest. Maybe you can think of a theme as it seems people do like storytelling but includes the no culture variant.

Yeah! Just so long as it's the original Dune series and not the prequels *spit*

Well, I don't want to start a Dune (original) vs. Dune Prequels arguement... but it may be an interesting way to present this variant. I'd have to put it on an arid world though, right?

(Just in case anyone is keeping score, I put my vote in 100% for the elder Herbert. His next of kin just couldn't match Frank's works)

Ok Maquis I am a real sucker for the Original Dune (although the movie could have been done a lot better but still liked it). Arid yes and that would also limit culture for the other AI's since growth would be difficult. If you go that route Maquis (and I shouldn't but can help myself with sci fi themes) I would love to join just to try.

I second that vote btw....

Definitely an arid world, though you are still limited by the options available (unless someone is willing to build a custom world). Even the Oasis, Ice Age, and Highlands maps seem too verdant in places. ;)

EDIT: After tinkering a bit, I think I like the Oasis map best: it fits more closely with Dune's idea of a dangerous equatorial desert with more habitable regions closer to the north and south poles. And it works even better when combined with the Cylindrical option - but unfortunately, that requires Warlords... :(

Good idea for a theme, though. Fremen on Arrakis, or Sardaukar on Salusa Secundus. The latter especially would have no use for culture...

Guys, just to let you know - the team threads for SGOTM-02 are now open. Good luck to both teams! :)

Ok team leaders Black and Red. (I'm on Black my favourite colour the colour of evil mohaaaa)

Armstrong was almost cut from VQ Red but I spoke up that he is OOP according to Scowler. Knowing Armstrong he just forget to post the dates in his Sig. Parents: "Armstrong we need help moving DOH but Mom I wanna play SG" "Never mind that dear let's go now and you will get some cookies too". Guys you want him on your team as he does pay attention to detail.

Now it is stated that team leaders post regularly rosters. Now bobrath since you the Black leader I think to make it easy you should ask players just to update it at the end of their turnset. Saves having to scroll seven pages to find out who's up. We have two nominations for LuvtoBuild for scribe and I have to say he's the best writer I have come across in a while. So let him do his magic when the time comes. Really who wants to do that anyways what a pain in (&(&.

So are the games beginning soon. I'd say Bobrath go for it.

Hail Cosmic! Actually armstrong has posted it himself in this very thread. ;) See here.

But I really like to see that you care! We all want him back! Especially me - the official lurker. :dubious:
Sorry, all you black beauties ... I had to make a choice ... and I've made it.

Kind regards to all VQers and all those who're lurking in this thread, .
