VQ05 - The Conquistadors

Nice to see Awlil is revolting. Hopefully on the second revolt it will flip to us... and by then we should be able to have enough of JC's cities to win diplo. Nine to see our plan come together!

Since seezachswim is still AWOL, bobrath can take it whenever he's ready.

Even if Awil don't flip in time, all that is needed is to capture it in a surprise attack the same turn we vote for Diplo Victory. MM has no way of retaliating in 2 turns.

The reason why I go to war early is because I don't think we can wait out the 70 turns ... MM will launch in 40 turns, I think.

As to needing 35 votes = 1/3 of JC's land, my answer is:
(1) remember, its pop that counts, not land. In war, the pop will starve due to capturing. This works favorably for us.
(2) cities close to China or were originally the Chinese should be gifted to Qin. He would do a better job at keeping the pop in tact than us.
(3) we have a handful of size 1 cities. These cities grow faster than size 15 cities, so even without capturing cities, our pop will grow faster than the rest, thus our percentage of votes will increase even if we do not acquire pops from JC.

My estimate is we need to capture 5-6 cities from JC (Remember JC has an island at the new world, easier target), that should takes 10 turns. Hopefully Awil will flip by then.

And bob, its close to 9 hrs .... :mischief:

Um, I never said that. I said:

We're going to have to take out about a 3rd of JC to get that.

The key phrase was take out ... there are many ways to take out, including razing, decimating farms around the cities to starve them, etc. And of course we should give Shanghai back to Qin.

And bob, its close to 9 hrs .... :mischief:

I was thinking the same thing ... I was hoping to play tonight

If it is take out that you meant, than your 1/3 is wrong. We need to take out more than 1/3 of JC's votes if we are not converting his votes into ours or Qin's. Assuming nothing changes, 873-35=838, 62% of it is 498 votes. We are still short 15 votes short. No, it serve us better to convert his votes into ours (or Qin's), which imply keeping whatever cities we capture ... (you copy that, bob? :D)

Sorry guys, combination of modern war - no turn logger - and dinner plans... means its a late report.

That being said... I probably should have won this game on about my 4th turn. (someone might want to have fun and go back and try it from the previous save). At that point we had 423 votes if QSH didn't change pop at all... we would get 518 votes which would have been exactly what we needed. I took single currency instead - mainly because I didn't have the forces in place for Awil (foolishly hoping it would flip).

SO here's the damage done:
dominate4pz.jpg

All cities were retained or given to QSH. I was a good little nara loving boy.:crazyeye:

On my second turn.. Louis got uppity!
civ4screenshot00010ob.jpg

This amounted to a very harrasing navy and mildy amusing cavalry with SAM support. Tanks like that!

I did decrease research for two years just in case I had to mass upgrade units. That didn't happen so after having picked up techs in trades I went ahead and blew my wad on:
civ4screenshot00088wr.jpg

Trade wise, picked up Facism + 50g + world map for Medicine from MM and Plastics from QSH for Medicine and Fusion. ( I could have also brought MM into war against Louis... but that made little to no sense).

1987 brought a nice little suprise:

If not for France beating up all our transports this would be easy. By the end of my turns, I've got the seas cleared enough to get Dante ready for use to help the Awil problem:

There are sufficient forces in the surrounding cities for the next vote that comes up. (correcting my mistakes from the previous two votes).

One oddity I saw in my conquest was this:

Yes it was quickly removed and gifted to QSH. Felt good to catch so many ships in drydock!

Where are we now?

So Mansa is 2 parts away from a launch. I'm not sure if the next vote is for re-election or for the win. We've got the win at whim (if we miss it cause of my timidity re Awil.... then I promise to begin loving Nara.

Next player can take peace from JC if they wish. He's basically done. You can lay the hammer down on backwards tech Louis for having the temerity to declare on us.

Oh and you can decide what to do with Dante and Awil. Mansa has some very ugly stacks on old VQica - so be prepared for it. You should have sufficient forces in new VQica to handle anything that way.

Here's the save enjoy!

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself ... a good play I say.

How does the UN works anyway? Each cycle consist of: 1 election voting and 2 resolution votings, right? The voting and results are spaced with 1 turn in between if I recall correctly, so in total its a 12-turns cycle. I think the next up will be re-election since the first election occurs in 1978AD.

In anycase, worse case scenario is that we have need to wait 5 turns to propose the Diplo win, and 2 more turns to win it. I doubt MM can launch the two hardest parts in 7 turns.

ChrTh gets to bring us the win. Smack on Louis I say. Plunge the whole world into war the year we are declared the King of the World! Let the blood cleanse the World in preparation for our inauguration!!!

You get three diplo votes after a sec gen election, so I believe we'll have one more vote choice (if I'm counting correctly 1+1+2+1=6, right?*)

I got it, however, I have to pack for my weekend and mow the lawn tonight, so there exists a slight chance I won't be able to play. If so, as soon as I know that'll be the case I'll post a skip request.

*I'll be realllllllly impressed if anyone catches that reference.

I'll also be out of pocket starting today around noon until this Sunday - unexpected out of town trip came up. Of course I'll try to get net access, but I will definitly not have civ access.

You better hurry up and get VQ06a played before you go ... :gripe:

done (and space to make it postable)

 ... btw, forgot to mention: great work during your turn. Looks like JC collapsed faster than [insert French Army joke here].

Honestly.... I went slower then I needed to. Lots of time spent resting up tanks. He only made one realistic offensive effort and that was a breakout attempt from Shanghai. While that breakout did hurt me - it hurt less then if I'd tried attacking those units in city. Sometimes the AI... boggles me.

JCs next mainland cities are a tougher nut with larger stacks. Plus WW (even with Mt. Rushmore) is starting to bite us.

Might want to consider taking peace (perhaps with both france and rome) and cranking out spies - turn research down to nil - find those last pieces MM is building and ---- hurt them.

Does Mansa have the techs needed to build the remaining two pieces? If he doesn't, I don't imagine he has enough time to build them before we win. If he does have the techs, I'll probably declare war to get Awlil and send all of our troops in JC's land West.

Ok, after checking on what I need to do tonight, I've reached the conclusion that I'm not going to have the time to give the end of the game the respect it deserves. Maquis, you get to finish :)

Ok.. so I was right, it didn't take all 10 turns... It only took one.

I get the option to call a vote on my first turn. I ask for Diplomatic Victory.

Also, Fiber Optics comes in. So I dial up Mansa to see where he's at with Techs... and he's got Fusion! He's got everything he needs to build the last two parts!

fusion4pp.jpg

hmmmm, I don't think so!

Pretty simple here... take out Awlil, and win diplo next turn...

So I declare. I suicide a couple Tanks to weaken the couple of Mech Infrantry in Awlil, and then I take them out with a couple more Tanks. Last thing, I send in the Cavalry! (To be honest, I looked for a Conquistador that was in range to make the final blow to the city, but alas, the only one was in North VQica.)

awlil6pt.jpg

Um... Let get this over with... Shift-Enter... Wait through a couple feeble attacks by Mansa...

and...

Ta-da!

Well I for one had a LOT of fun with the variant. Kept a nice mix of culture, war, and even some diplomacy in the end of the game.

Great play by all, as always!! Go VQ!!!! :goodjob: (Oh, and a special thanks to ChrTh for letting me play the last turn!)

Oh, and just a note... I was *this* close to posting the save at the end of 1991 for Greyfox. JUST PRESS ENTER! :p
