VQ05 - The Conquistadors

Not the most exciting of turns. QSH has a massive stack sitting just to our east that had me worried most all of my turns. (and still does) Its only a matter of time until Mansa asks us to cancel deals with QSH... and we'll have to in order to keep Mansa on our side when QSH attacks.

I do hope the throw away chinese city to the far NW will flip to us soon so that the - for cultural pressure goes down.

Mansa went thorugh a golden age during my turn.

I did extort 50 g from Cyrus at the start of my turns. Heck if he's going to sit up here, we might as well make him pay us for leaving him in the game.

The barbs in the new world have maces and longbows. Its gonna be tough. I popped one hut for exp on our explorer. Two other huts found, but both had barbs (warrior or archer) which meant our explorer couldn't touch em.

I joined the Great Scientist to Toledo to try and get that city cranking on research. (he would have gotten us half way to Printing Press)

Currently working on Liberalism. Its due in 5, but I think we might be racing Mansa.

I traded world maps with Louis when he came asking. I'd like to have him on our side instead of QSH. Too bad later in my turns, he demanded we cancel deals with Mansa. Win some, Lose some. Louis does like our civics tho (+4) so that helps a bit.

I traded our spice surplus to everyone but QSH and picked up 13gpt in total for it.

Mansa founded a city in the northern desert (right on top of the wheat). It got hinduism right away. Mansa is also starting to walk a settler across our lands. Not sure where he's headed.

I did some very basic longbow building for extra defense, but mostly just tried to improve our GNP. We have more food then most of the world, but our production, power, and culture are abysmal.

Here's the world as we know it:

The ultra scary stack of doom to our east:

Not much else to say. If we get liberalism (and I'd suggest doing whatever we can reasonably do to shave a turn or two), then we really need to seriously consider beelining for the new world (and destroying Cyrus along the way). Barbs are making some nice cities over there, and our UU is going to age out sooner rather then later.

Finally the save:

Got it. Beelining to Astronomy (hopefully via Liberalism and a free tech). Will keep an eye on Qin's stack. If it gets that far, I'll eliminate Cyrus.

Looking at Qin's stack, I wonder if he'd send it to the New World? I really don't have a lot of experience if the AI will go for those cities in the New World.

One thing I do know, once we take one of the barb cities, be prepared! That city will get POUNDED by a steady flow of barbs...

well its not that big SOD... its mostly longbows and carvels, gallays and settler

There's an ellipsis ...

@Maquis: I was thinking the same thing; I bet the AI is putting together an overseas expedition and is just waiting for Astronomy.

Ok, I'm in feast mode, so I'm going to be more text-heavy than pic-heavy this turn.

We're working Liberalism, want to get to Astronomy. Astronomy can actually be worked next, I believe, so if we can get the free tech from liberalism :religion: ...

I'm not going to cover all the builds in the write-up, I'm going to be working on GNP and Soldiers since those are our weakest areas. Right now we're in 5th place, I'm going to try to move us up.

In 1560 AD, our gpt jumped 10, but nothing was built ... :hmm: I'm guessing Mansa adopting Free Markets got us some free trade route money. Hopefully that means he was working on Economics instead of Liberalism (I checked and he didn't grab Economics as a free tech with Liberalism).

In 1565 AD, our Explorer was killed after being tag-teamed by Barbarian Longbows. Also, Persepolis' courthouse allowed me to shave a turn off of Liberalism.

In 1570 AD, we win the race to Liberalism, and we get Astronomy as our free tech
I start Gunpowder (due in 6).

I adopt Free Speech and Mercantilism and make sure we get some Merchants in our free specialists.

In 1585 AD I trade Education to JC for Engineering and Theology. I do NOT trade Astronomy.

On the last turn, Gunpowder comes in, start Chemistry (due in 10).

Well, at one point we were 4th in GNP, but we've slid back to 5th. We have moved up to 4th in soldiers, though.

Galleon started in Barcelona, but it may be awhile before we're ready to invade.

Sorry for the short report, here's the save:

Good job getting Liberalism!! And good job on the tech trade too!

Is QSH still stacking up his army at our border? Last I checked, he is pleased with Louis, so it can't be to attack Louis. There is only 2 explanations for the stack in that city. (a) to attack us. (b) to wait for galleys or galleons to finish off Cyrus.

Although I sure as hell hope it is (b), but I think (a) is more plausible ...

We were lucky to get Liberalism, everyone (except JC, I reckon, since he didn't have Education) else had it within a couple turns of us getting it. Hrm, check to see if you can still trade Liberalism to JC.

There's still a stack, but I'm convinced it's for the new world. I've never seen an AI prebuild a stack that huge for the purpose of starting a war with someone they're not already furious with.

Sorry, I meant to get to this last night, but outdoors stuff got in the way (Us Minnesotans are finally coming out of hibernation)

I'll be playing my turns in about 10 hours.

Quoted just so I have proof you were ______.

:mischief:

That gives me an idea. Why don't we keep a close eye on the stack and the tech situation ... get Frigates by researching Chemistry ... and when Qin sends the stack out on the water (assuming he doesn't wait for Frigates) ... declare war and send the stack to the bottom of the ocean.

Oh, and take a couple of his cities too

EDIT: Of course, the other  idea is to let Qin land the stack in the new world, bear the brunt of fighting off the barb hordes, and then take advantage of the situation ...

... get Frigates by researching Chemistry ...

Well that should be easy enough for me to do, since

Gunpowder comes in, start Chemistry (due in 10).

Seriously though, I am going to start the buildup to ship some units to the new world... Time for the variant rules to kick in.

Not much going on this turnset... The biggest news is, the Conquistadors have set foot on the new world! It shall soon be ours! (Ok, maybe not soon... but it will be ours!)

I trained a few troops here and there, but mainly putting our cities on Infra. Getting some more courthouses and starting some Banks. Need to get the GPT up...

Points of Interest:

Chemistry came in on turn 9, I set for PP next. I think the +1 gold for Town & village should really help.

Another Scientist born in Toledo, and I sent him to Madrid for an Academy. (he would have given is 1800 :beaker: for PP, but we get 15 bpt in Madrid with the academy... So that's a better deal in the long run.)

Got another border pop at Persophlis, and looks like Qin's city W of it may flip to us...

Not sure if we want to keep it? bobrath may want to rename it Nara's Revenge?

Speaking of Qin, his stack is still sitting there. I'm really thinking he's waiting for galleys. Oh well... we beat him to the new world anyways!

No one else has Astronomy yet. Qin did ask to trade Nationalism +300g for it, but I turned him down. I don't want him taking off for our land anytime soon.

We could however think about trading Chemistry, Ceasar appears to have it already. I didn't shop it around, but there are a few techs out there that may be worth it. I'll leave that up to GreyFox.

Demographics look good... We're #1 in pop and land area. Starting to think Domination or Diplo (via backdoor domination) may be good options. Rememeber we have to control the new world first!

Here's our standing:

demo8wd.jpg

And finally the save:

If we're possibly going for domination, we might as well keep New Nara. The only non-ocean tile it can grab is the town.

So just keep in mind that if that stack is destined for the new world and we've got that covered.... where is the stack going to get used?

and if you think our culture won't cover "New Nara" by the time we reach backdoor... well we need to talk. From a pop point of view - what's the max size on the Nara/Perseopolis area? If its not signifigantly different from just Perseopolis.... well you know my opinion.

New Nara only shares 5 tiles with Persepolis (it appears), so New Nara+Persepolis is 37 tiles workable, which is much higher than the 21 of Persepolis alone. With windmills, state property, and a lighthouse, New Nara can easily reach 16.

In the Chambers of Isabella ...

"Your Majesty, we bring news from our colonzation efforts."

"Good. Tell me, do you bore good news?"

"Er ... Yes Majesty! Our conquistador found a hut, and promptly killed the barbarian warrior guarding it!"

"Excellent!"

"Er... However, the hut proved hostile! And there be barbarian maceman as well."

vq05-AD1660-hut-hostile.jpg

Isabella raised a questioning eyebrow

"My Queen, I'm afriad the conquistador is dead, after fighting off two macemen."

"Incompetent fools!"

"I have already send more forces there. Fortunately, out swordsman are well and alive."

"Hmmm ... how peculiar! The stronger conquistador dies and the weaker swords survived?"

"Afraid so, Your Majesty."

"OKay ... what's these commodition I heard in the other two cities? Heard people are getting angry."

"Its because your friend, Mansa. He demanded us to cancel deals with Louis.

vq05-AD1675-mansa-ask.jpg

Since you have commanded us to please Moussier Mansa whenever possible, we agreed, resulting in the lost of happiness resources from the French."

"You fools! Mansa just share my bed once! Next time, think before you act!"

"But I bore better news. We have conquered our first barbairan city!"

"Finally, something better to brighten my day. But I thought you said the conquistador was killed?"

"That was the first southern expedtion. The city we captured was from the second expedition sent to the northern continent of the New World."

vq05-AD1695-conquered-Vanda.jpg

"Ok ... but how did they reach there so fast?"

"I used a relaying technique, My Queen. Let me illustrate with our current reinforcement: two galleons meet in the open sea. The trrops then transfered from a moved galleon to an unmoved galleon, thus allowing them to move twice as fast."

vq05-AD1970-transport-relay.jpg

"Hmmm ... fabulous!"

"I futher break the troops into two, Your Majesty. Onc with Longbow will reinforce the newly conquered city. The other with cats will join the southern expeition."

Some Gripe:
- Why the obsession with artists and egineers? Engineer is useless, bringing only one 2 hammer. Unless a border city, artists is useless as well. And we still do not have any shrine!!! So, please keep the priest specialist, and pray that a GP is borned.

The exploit is back? Or is only one transfer allowed?

Is there such an exploit? No, AFAICR, you can only transfer troops that have not yet spend their movement points, and once you transfer, their movement is spent for that turn. So only one transfer. Doesn't sounds like an exploit to me. If ther eare unlimited transfer, then yes, its an exploit.

Welcome back into the pocket ... so to speak.
