Regular chess is cool, but sometimes you just wanna play a wacky variant. One christmas I got a Sharper Image gift card from some estranged cousin or something, so I myself have a collection that you might find interesting...

Circular Chess:

It works just like chess except their are no sides to the board. Rooks and queens can literally loop around. Apparently early forms of chess were like this. It has the flavor of a siege/defend battle although both sides are exactly the same. It's a lot of fun, plus it came with these badass medieval-looking pieces...

I also have 3-player chess:

Also just like regular chess except the goal is to checkmate one person. The player who checkmates wins, and the other players lose. I've never actually played but it's a big hit at the club due to it's nature of alliances/betrayals.

And I've got a XiangQi (Chinese Chess) set, but I consider that it's own game, not a chess variant. REALLY cool game.

XiangQi is a chess variant, it meets all requirements...

I'd like to also mentoin japanese Shogi, and old chess variants like Shatranj.

I'm also a fan of Chess With Different Armies.

I like Chinese checkers, it's a variant of regular checkers. The Chinese chess variant sounds cool as well.;)

I've played four-player chess, it's kind of fun.

My favorite chess-variant with a standard board & pieces is shuffle chess.

It's a more "pure" competition in a way because memory & experience with different openings is not a factor. You have to come up with all your own moves from the get go.
